Claire studied Lena for several seconds.
Marcus stood near the window but said nothing.
Lena had noticed he was getting better at that.
"We know Dale forged my signature," Lena continued. "We know Victor's company created the file. But we don't know who ordered it, who approved it, or what else they did together."
Claire tapped her pen against the desk.
"So you want Victor comfortable."
"I want him arrogant."
Marcus finally spoke.
"That's not difficult."
Lena looked at him.
"Then let's help him."
For the next four days, they did nothing publicly.
It drove Victor crazy.
The media tasting remained scheduled.
Dale continued telling reporters that Rosa's recipes belonged to the Mercer family.
Victor's attorneys sent two more letters.
Lena answered neither personally.
Then the rumors changed.
The first one reached Maya through a restaurant owner in Buckhead.
The second reached a member of Reed Hospitality's board.
By the third day, the story had become polished enough to sound deliberate.
Lena Torres had not won the hotel contract because of her pies.
She had won it because she was sleeping with Marcus Reed.
Maya called Lena late Thursday afternoon.
"Don't open social media."
Lena was standing in the commercial kitchen, weighing flour.
"That means I should open social media."
"It means I'm asking you not to."
Lena put down the scoop.
"What happened?"
Maya exhaled.
"A hospitality account posted photographs of you and Marcus leaving Claire's office."
"So?"
"The caption suggests your relationship started before the supplier trial."
"That's false."
"I know."
"Marcus didn't even have my phone number before the trial."
"I know that too."
Lena pulled off her gloves.
"What are they saying?"
Maya hesitated.
"That you traded access for access."
For a moment, Lena didn't understand.
Then she did.
Her face burned.
Not from embarrassment.
Rage.
She opened the post.
There was her photograph.
Marcus beside her.
A headline beneath it.

The article barely mentioned her blind tasting scores.
Nothing about the seventeen-percent cost advantage.
Nothing about her sales numbers.
Nothing about the fact that she had negotiated her own contract.
Instead, it described her as "a struggling young baker whose unusually close relationship with billionaire hotel executive Marcus Reed coincided with a rapid commercial rise."
Lena read the sentence twice.
Dale had taken her money.
Victor was trying to take something worse.
Her ability.
Her name.
Her work.
Everything she had built was being rewritten as something a man had handed her.
Marcus called.
She answered immediately.
"I saw it."
His voice was cold.
"I'm having legal review it."
"No."
"Lena, they're accusing you of sleeping your way into my company."
"I understand the accusation."
"I'm not letting that stand."
"Then tell the truth."
"I intend to."
"Only the truth."
Silence.
Lena continued.
"No threats. No billionaire crushing a blogger. No calling favors."

"I think you're angry."

"So am I."
She looked at the trays lined across the kitchen.
"But I still have to think."
The next morning, Reed Hospitality's board called an emergency meeting.
Marcus was required to attend.
Lena was not.
She spent two hours pretending to work before Maya arrived at the kitchen.
One look at Maya's face told her enough.
"They're freezing the contract," Lena said.
Maya didn't answer immediately.
"For now."
Lena closed her eyes.
"How long?"
"Until the conflict review is complete."
"What conflict?"
"Marcus personally introduced you as a supplier. Now there's a public allegation of a personal relationship."
"We aren't in a relationship."
"I know."
"Did you tell them that?"
"Yes."
"And?"
Maya looked miserable.
"They don't care whether the allegation is true yet. They care that shareholders could believe procurement was compromised."
Lena turned away.
Her chest felt hollow.
"Marcus?"
"Recused."
That word hurt more than she expected.
Not because Lena wanted him to interfere.
Because now he couldn't.
For the first time since the hotel trial began, Marcus had no authority over what happened to her contract.
Maya stepped closer.
"I fought for you."
Lena looked at her.
"I know."
"But if the review takes more than two weeks, procurement has to source replacements."
"From who?"
Maya didn't answer.
Lena already knew.
"Victor."
"He's submitted a proposal."
Of course he had.
The rumor wasn't gossip.
It was procurement strategy.
Destroy Lena's credibility.
Force Marcus out of the decision.
Freeze Lena's contract.
Then step into the empty space.
Victor Shaw wasn't merely stealing her recipes.
He was trying to erase the reason anyone believed in her business.
By Monday, Lena's production schedule had been cut by sixty percent.
She canceled an ingredient order.
Reduced kitchen hours.
Delayed plans to hire another baker.
She paid every outstanding invoice.
Then she looked at what remained in the company account.
For the first time, $18,400 didn't feel like freedom.
It felt like a clock.
Claire called at noon.
"We received a settlement offer."
"How generous."
"You're going to hate it."
"I already do."
Claire emailed the document.
Victor Shaw offered Lena $75,000.
In return, she would withdraw all accusations concerning the forged assignment, acknowledge Dale's ownership of the original recipes, and permanently surrender the LENA'S TABLE name and all related branding.
Lena stared at the screen.
Seventy-five thousand dollars.
Months ago, Dale had beaten her over twenty.
Now someone was offering enough money to change her life.
All she had to do was agree that her life had never belonged to her.
Marcus came to the apartment that evening.
He stood outside until Lena opened the door.
"I heard about the offer."
"Everyone hears everything in your world."
"I'm still recused."
"Good."
He frowned.
"Good?"
"I don't want you fixing this."
"I'm beginning to understand that."
Lena sat at the kitchen table.

Marcus took the chair opposite her.
"Seventy-five thousand is enough to start over somewhere else," he said.
Lena looked up sharply.
"I'm not telling you to take it."
"Then why say that?"
"Because pretending it's nothing would be insulting."
That softened her anger.
Marcus continued.
"It's real money. Especially when your contract is frozen."
Lena looked at the settlement again.
"I could open another bakery."
"Yes."
"Use different recipes."
"Yes."
"Different name."
"Yes."
She swallowed.
"And every time someone asks why, I get to explain that Dale Mercer took my mother's name away from me."
Marcus said nothing.
Lena closed the document.
"No."
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then she answered.
"Hello?"
Dale's voice came through the speaker.
"Take the money."
Lena went still.
Marcus saw her face change.
"Dale."
"You've made your point. You got attention. You embarrassed me."
"You did that yourself."
"Seventy-five grand is more than you'll ever make selling pies."
Lena almost laughed.
"You really don't understand my numbers."
Dale's voice hardened.
"Victor won't offer twice."
"Good."
"You think Reed's going to keep protecting you?"
Lena glanced at Marcus.
He couldn't hear every word, but he understood enough.
Dale continued.
"The board already put him on a leash."
"How do you know that?"
A pause.
Too small.
But Lena heard it.
Victor was feeding Dale information.
"Take the money," Dale repeated.
"No."
"Don't be stupid."
Lena stood.
Dale laughed softly.
"Girls like you don't get a second chance."
The old Lena might have heard a threat.
This Lena heard an opportunity to tell him exactly how badly he had misjudged her.
"You're right."
Dale went quiet.
Lena looked at the blue book on her table.
"That's why I'm not wasting mine."
She ended the call.
Marcus looked at her.
"You recorded that?"
Lena held up the phone.
"Automatically."
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
"Of course you did."
The next afternoon, Claire was reviewing the settlement language when her receptionist transferred an unexpected call.
A woman.
She refused to speak to an assistant.
She refused to send details by email.
She asked specifically for the attorney representing Lena Torres.
Claire took the call.
"This is Claire Bennett."
The woman breathed shakily.
"My name is Rachel Hayes."
Claire opened a blank document.
"How can I help you, Ms. Hayes?"
"I used to work for Victor Shaw."
Claire stopped typing.
"In what capacity?"
"Finance."
"How long?"
"Eight years."
"Why did you leave?"
Another pause.
"I didn't leave."
Claire sat straighter.
"I was fired."
"When?"
"Six weeks ago."
Claire's eyes moved to the calendar.
Six weeks.
Before Victor's first legal demand against Lena.
"Why are you calling me?"
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
When she finally spoke, her voice had changed.
Fear had been replaced by something sharper.
"I saw the news about Lena Torres."
Claire reached for her phone and texted Lena one sentence.
COME TO MY OFFICE. NOW.
Then she returned to the call.
"What did you see at Shaw Culinary?"
Rachel inhaled.
"The forged contract isn't the worst thing they did."
