"The Sixth Year After I Escaped the Vandermeers" Six Years of Records
The hidden door was behind my mother's portrait.
Blacktide had always collected secrets in architectural spaces: priest holes, blind corridors, servants' stairs that allowed silver to appear without human hands. I found the new lock because the portrait hung half an inch away from the wall.
The ring on my finger opened it.
Inside, steel shelves replaced stone. Boxes bore cities and dates. BOSTON. MONTREAL. LISBON. PRAGUE. BRUSSELS. CORK. Each contained pieces of a life I believed I had built alone.
My first forged lease. A train receipt softened by rain. Hospital invoices. Photographs taken through cafe windows. The green scarf I left on a bus outside Lyon. Five passports, including one I had burned.
I opened the medical file and saw Conrad's approval beneath a surgery bill in Belgium.
The light came on.
Everett sat behind a bank of monitors, headphones glowing blue. "If you scream, Silas will come. If you hit me, Rhys will come. I recommend questions."
"Who took these?"
"Different people. Mostly professionals. Callum occasionally, when he wanted to feel useful."
"You watched me sleep."
"We verified respiration."
I struck him.
His chair rolled backward. He touched his split lip and looked almost relieved.
"Again?"
"Don't tempt me."
"I have been tempted for six years."
The others arrived in less than a minute. Their argument began before the door closed.
Conrad accused Everett of retaining too much. Vaughn demanded to know which surveillance crossed federal borders. Silas wanted the medical images removed. Callum said the wedding video had never belonged in the archive. Rhys stood by the wall, jaw hard, and admitted that half the street photographs were his.
"Who allowed monitoring at this distance?" Conrad asked.
I laughed. Every man stopped.
"Now you want jurisdiction?"
Leander entered last. He looked from the boxes to my face.
"Now discussing boundaries is six years late," he said.
No one argued.
I selected a file at random. It described the night I developed pneumonia in Lisbon. A clinic had waived payment. An anonymous donor had moved me to a private room. Silas had signed the medical consultation from New York. In the margin he had written that I still reacted badly to codeine.
"You could have spoken to me."
"You changed countries whenever you saw us," Rhys said.
"That was an answer."
"It was fear," Conrad replied.
"You don't get to rename it."
I turned to Leander. "Did you watch too?"
His silence lasted one beat.
"Yes."
The honest answer hurt more.
"Every day?"
"No."
"How often?"
"Whenever they believed you were in danger."
Everett muttered, "Which was often."
Leander's gaze sharpened, and Everett looked away.
I moved to the last monitor. A video file waited there with yesterday's date. My hand shook once over the trackpad.
On-screen, I stood at the window above the Cork shop, wearing my wedding jacket. The camera was close enough to catch my fingers flattening the lapels. Finn entered behind me with tea. I smiled at something he said.
In the real memory, the room had felt private.
On-screen, someone breathed near the microphone.
"Who filmed this?"
Callum lowered his eyes.
"Who?"
"A contractor," Everett said. "Across the courtyard."
I watched myself remove the jacket, exposing the scar along my ribs. The lens adjusted focus.
I shut the screen so hard the plastic cracked.
Rhys moved first, not toward me but toward Everett. "You said exterior confirmation only."
"I didn't request interior footage."
"But you kept it," Silas said.
The room fractured. Accusations crossed the shelves. Six men who had coordinated nations, hospitals, courts, and cameras now discovered each of them had drawn a private line and assumed the others shared it.
Leander unplugged the server.
The monitors went black.
"Destroy it," he told Everett.
"There are records we need."
"Keep threats and financial intervention. Delete every private image."
Conrad objected. Leander turned on him.
"You wanted him home. Look at him. Is this what home means?"
I backed toward the door.
Everett wiped blood from his lip. "Elliot."
"Don't."
"We never lost you."
"That isn't comfort."
His face emptied of sarcasm.
"We were waiting for you to come back on your own."
I looked at shelves filled with stolen proof that I had survived.
"You made sure there was nowhere I could go alone."
Then I closed the hidden door between us.
