"The Sixth Year After I Escaped the Vandermeers" Blacktide Estate
I woke to the sea hitting rock.
The sound entered my skull before light did. I opened my eyes to the old blue canopy above my childhood bed and knew the Atlantic on the wrong side of the world had found me.
Silas had given me something in the van. He called it medication for panic and dehydration. I called it kidnapping with dosage instructions.
The bedroom door opened when I pulled the handle. The windows opened too. Below them, forty feet of black cliff waited beneath a strip of lawn. My borrowed phone showed no service. My Irish bank account rejected its password. The passport on the desk had a red cancellation mark across the identity page.
No locks. Only consequences.
Leander entered carrying soup, bread, and shoes.
"Get out."
He set the tray down. A small strip covered the cut near his eyebrow, left by my struggle in the van.
"You slept fourteen hours."
"You drugged me across an ocean."
"Silas drugged you. I argued for a ship."
I picked up the water glass and threw it.
He turned his head. Glass struck the mantel and exploded. A bright line appeared at his brow.
"That was almost funny," I said.
"Your aim used to be better."
I stepped back and felt a sting beneath my heel. Blood marked the carpet.
Leander crossed the room.
I raised the jagged base of the glass. "Touch me and I will open your throat."
He kept coming.
I expected his hand at my wrist. Instead his arm went around my waist. The floor vanished. He lifted me against his chest and carried me across the glass as if I weighed no more than the wet coat abandoned by the door.
"Put me down."
"When you stop bleeding."
"I mean it."
"So do I."
He placed me on the bed and knelt. His fingers closed around my ankle. The contact was careful. The strength beneath it was not.
"Continue breaking things," he said. "First put on shoes."
He removed a sliver from my heel. I hated the concentration on his face. It made cruelty easier when the person hurting you looked cruel.
"Why didn't you bring me back before?"
His thumb paused against my pulse. "You asked us not to find you."
"And now?"
"You were about to bind yourself to a false identity forever."
"That was my decision."
"Yes."
The agreement startled me.
"Then send me back."
"No."
He taped gauze beneath my foot, put the shoes beside the bed, and stood. The restraint in him felt less like kindness than a locked weapon.
At dinner all six men waited around the long table. Conrad had removed his glove. A white scar crossed his palm. Vaughn slid a folder toward me containing restoration of my legal identity. Callum poured wine as though we were celebrating. Rhys occupied the chair nearest the door. Everett did not look up from his tablet. Silas watched how much I ate.
I remained standing.
"Which one of you owns my bank now?"
"Technically," Conrad said, "we own the institution that owns it."
"My phone?"
Everett lifted a finger.
"My passport?"
Vaughn closed the folder. "Invalid before we reached the airport."
"And you call this voluntary."
"No," Leander said from the far end. "I call it wrong."
Every face turned toward him.
He looked at Conrad. "Restore the account."
"He will run."
"Then he runs with his own money."
Vaughn objected. Leander silenced him with a glance. For the first time I saw the difference between being the heir on paper and being the person the room obeyed.
I left without eating.
My wardrobe waited open upstairs.
The clothes I had abandoned at eighteen hung in color order. Nothing smelled of dust. Jackets had been let out through the shoulders. Trousers had been lengthened. Shirts bore fresh hand stitching at the seams, altered to the body I had grown into while living under other names.
On the shelf lay a gray sweater I had lost in Prague.
Someone had brought it home.
I touched the sleeve and felt watched by six years of invisible hands.
Behind me, Leander said, "We never emptied the room."
I turned. "You measured me."
"Silas kept medical records. Callum bought the clothes you left at laundries."
"That explanation is worse."
"Most true ones are."
I pulled the sweater down. A repair had been made at the cuff with thread the exact shade of storm clouds.
It was my stitch.
I had repaired it in Prague two weeks before abandoning that name.
Leander watched recognition move across my face.
"How did this get here?"
He did not answer.
He did not need to.
