"The Sixth Year After I Escaped the Vandermeers" The Night the Real Heir Came Home
Six years earlier, Blacktide had smelled of beeswax, salt, and the storm crawling toward the Maine coast.
I was eighteen and still believed a closed door meant the people behind it did not want to hurt me.
The library door stood open by an inch. Conrad's voice came through first. "The trust must be amended before Leander enters the house."
Vaughn answered, lower. "And Elliot's movements restricted until Edmund's people are identified."
"He will fight it," Callum said.
"Then don't tell him until the papers are signed," Conrad replied.
I stopped breathing.
On the baize table beside me lay a folder stamped VANDERMEER FAMILY TRUST. My name appeared beneath a black line. Across the hall, the lawyer said a commercial marriage could protect the remaining assets. Silas asked whether sedatives would be necessary if I panicked. Rhys said nothing. His silence sounded like agreement.
I had spent my life being useful. I knew what happened to an imitation after the original returned.
No one came looking when I backed away.
In my room, I packed three shirts, cash from a locked drawer, and the little restoration knife Silas had given me. I cut every credit card through the chip. The onyx ring resisted when I pulled it off. For a moment I thought my finger had swollen around it. Then it came free and struck the desk.
Headlights crossed the ceiling.
A black sedan moved through the gates below. In the rear seat sat a young man with black hair and a face turned toward the house. The car slowed beneath my window. His gaze lifted.
Green eyes met mine through rain and glass.
He raised one hand.
I stepped back before I could see whether it was greeting or accusation.
The service stairs took me past the kitchens. Mrs. Bell had left bread cooling beneath a cloth. I stole half a loaf and hated myself for taking it. At the east wall, wet ivy tore under my fingers. My shoe slipped on the coping stone. A broken iron spike entered my right side with a heat so clean I did not feel pain until I hit the ground.
I pressed my shirt against the blood and ran left.
In the security room, Conrad watched my shape cross Camera Twelve.
Rhys reached for the radio. Conrad covered it with one gloved hand.
"Wait," he said.
"He's bleeding."
"He'll circle back before dawn."
It was the only bet Conrad ever made without arranging the outcome.
At the coastal road, I climbed into a delivery truck headed south. The driver asked my name. I looked at the flour dust on his sleeve and said the first thing that came to mind.
"Nolan."
By dawn, I was in Portland. By noon, a bus carried me toward Boston. I watched every dark car in the glass and waited for Rhys to appear. No one did.

Back at Blacktide, Leander entered my bedroom before anyone had explained who I was. The bed was made. The wardrobe doors stood open. Rain moved through the window I had forgotten to close.
He found my note on the pillow.
The real Vandermeer has returned. Give him everything that belongs to him.
Conrad remained in the doorway with mud on his shoes. "We will bring him back."
Leander read the note again. A narrow red line opened where the paper cut his thumb.
"How long did he think he had to leave?"
No one answered.
"Who told him he was being replaced?"
"No one," Vaughn said.
Leander looked at all six men. He had survived fourteen years of foster homes by recognizing lies before they were complete.
"That isn't the same as telling him he was safe."
Silas found blood on the wall. Rhys found the torn ivy and a piece of linen caught on iron. Callum called every airport. Everett opened traffic cameras from three states. Vaughn prepared warrants he never filed.
Conrad stood before Camera Twelve while the recording looped. Each time my body hit the far lawn, he flinched too late.
At sunset he gave the order to pursue.
By then, Nolan Gray had purchased a bus ticket with cash.
Leander carried my note to the west wing. The bedroom assigned to him had once been a guest suite. He refused it. He slept in a chair outside my room instead, the onyx ring closed inside his fist.
At three in the morning, Callum found him awake.
"We'll find him," Callum said.
"You already had him."
"That isn't fair."
"Neither was letting him climb a wall while injured."
Callum leaned against the door. "What do you want when we get him back?"
Leander looked into the empty room.
"An answer."
"To what?"
His fingers tightened around my farewell.
"Who allowed him to decide for me?"
Later, when I tried to arrange the day into a sequence that made sense, I kept returning to the wet east wall and the blood on my shirt.
Objects were easier than motives. They remained where hands put them and did not rename fear as concern.
The harder fact was Conrad's order to wait. I examined it from every angle, looking for the version in which one clean villain had made every decision.
Blacktide offered no such mercy. Each man had acted from a different wound, and each wound had still become my cage.
For years I had believed survival required speed: notice danger, choose a name, leave before anyone could close a hand.
Now I understood that I had mistaken silence for a verdict. Understanding did not equal forgiveness. It only meant I could no longer lie to myself with the same efficiency.
By nightfall, Leander entered an empty room instead of the reunion he had crossed the country to claim. I did not know whether that knowledge moved me nearer to the family or farther away.
