"I Keep Waking Up in My Straight Roommate's Arms" Chapter 12
California placed three hours and an entire climate between them.
Adrian's day began at five. Noah's often ended at two. Their first week apart became a relay of missed calls and apologetic messages.
Awake?
In studio. Call after water training?
Meeting ran late. Tomorrow?
Miss you.
Miss you too.
They tried scheduled video dates. Adrian approached them with the solemnity of appointments; Noah forgot one while mixing a color and arrived forty minutes late with cobalt on his face.
Adrian said it was fine.
It was not fine.
"You're doing the eyebrow," Noah said through the screen.
"I don't know what that means."
"It means you're angry while pretending to be reasonable."
"I rearranged recovery for this call."
"I apologized."
"You apologize as if time is imaginary."
"I was working."
"So was I."
The argument grew from there, gathering every missed call and unspoken fear. Noah accused Adrian of treating affection like a schedule. Adrian accused Noah of making promises he expected charm to repair.
They ended the call without saying good night.
Noah slept badly. At three fourteen he woke in the suite kitchen, one hand gripping the refrigerator handle.
Marcus found him there.
"Hey," Marcus said gently. "You with me?"
Noah blinked. His bare feet were cold. "I think so."
Marcus guided him to the couch and brought water.
"Want me to call Kovacs?"
"No."
"That was fast."
"He has time trials tomorrow."
Marcus sat opposite him. "You two know there's a middle ground between total dependence and pretending you have no needs, right?"
"When did you become wise?"
"My girlfriend trained me."
Noah texted Adrian after sunrise.
I sleepwalked last night. I am safe. Marcus helped. I'm telling you because hiding it would be unfair, not because I need you to fix it.
Adrian called within thirty seconds.
"Are you injured?"
"No."
"Did you call Dr. Shah?"
"I sent a message."
"I can fly back after trials."
"No."
"Noah—"
"Listen. This happened after stress and poor sleep. We know what it is. I have support here. I need you to stay."
Adrian's face on the screen was pale with helplessness.
"I hate this," he said.
"I know."
"I hate that Marcus was there and I was not."
"I know."
"I am also angry you missed the call."
"That's fair."
The admission changed the temperature.
"I should have set an alarm," Noah said. "Your time matters even when mine gets slippery."
Adrian rubbed a hand over his face. "I should not have made one missed date evidence that you will leave me."
"Also fair."
They stayed quiet together.
"What do we change?" Adrian asked.
They replaced rigid two-hour dates with shorter calls three times a week and one protected Sunday hour. If either had to cancel, he proposed a new time instead of leaving the loss open. Noah shared his sleep log. Adrian shared his training recovery scores, which made him deeply uncomfortable and Noah perversely delighted.

The system did not make distance easy. It made effort visible.
Two weeks later, Adrian strained his shoulder during an ergometer test. Noah noticed because Adrian kept his left arm outside the video frame.
"Show me," Noah said.
"It's fine."
"We retired that lie."
Adrian moved the camera. Kinesiology tape crossed his shoulder.
"Trainer?"
"Seen. Forty-eight hours off water."
"Thank you for telling me."
"You extracted it."
"Progress is progress."
Noah mailed him a care package containing anti-inflammatory patches, terrible protein bars, a charcoal sketch of the Charles, and one blue ceramic mug he had found in a thrift store.
Adrian called when it arrived. He held the mug as if it were breakable in ways ceramic was not.
"It's not the same," Noah said.
"No."
"Is that bad?"
Adrian looked into the camera. "No. It means we can make another ritual."
From then on, every Sunday, they heated milk in separate kitchens and drank together across three hours and three thousand miles.
On the fourth Sunday, the ritual failed. Adrian's training ran late and Noah's milk boiled over. He cursed while wiping the stove, then answered the video call with smoke drifting behind him.
"Are you on fire?" Adrian asked.
"Emotionally."
"Turn the camera."
"Do not perform a remote safety inspection."
Adrian's mouth twitched. He sat outside the athlete dormitory with his mug balanced on one knee. Sunset colored the concrete wall behind him pink.
"Tell me one bad thing," Noah said, "and one good thing."
They had invented the rule to keep calls from becoming reports designed to reassure the other.
"Bad: I lost my seat in the first boat for next week," Adrian said. "Good: the athlete who took it earned it."
Six months earlier, the second sentence would have been impossible.
"Bad: my father emailed to ask whether the residency pays enough to count as employment," Noah said. "Good: the gallery director wants to see my new series."
"Your father is wrong."
"I know."
"You sound as if you believe it."
Noah realized he did.
They drank imperfect milk in imperfect kitchens until the distance felt less like absence and more like a road with both ends lit.
The road still had dark stretches. In April, Noah received a rejection from the fellowship he had treated as his safest plan. He read the email at 1:00 a.m. and did not call Adrian, telling himself it was too late in California.
The next morning Adrian noticed before Noah mentioned it.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
"Your eyebrow."
"That belongs to you."
"Apparently it is contagious."
Noah sent the rejection. Adrian read it without rushing to contradict the committee or build a new plan.
"Do you want comfort, solutions, or company?" he asked.
The question came from a list Noah had once made as a joke.
"Company."
Adrian propped his phone against the wall and stayed while Noah stretched a new canvas. They barely spoke. Training noise moved around Adrian; studio light changed around Noah.
After an hour, Noah could breathe around the disappointment.
"Thank you," he said.
"I did nothing."
"Exactly what I asked."
Adrian nodded, finally understanding that presence did not have to arrive disguised as repair.
