"I Keep Waking Up in My Straight Roommate's Arms" Chapter 5

Adrian planned a date the way he planned a race.

At six the next evening, Noah found him in the living room studying a note on his phone. He wore a charcoal sweater over a white shirt, dark trousers, and the expression of a man reviewing wind conditions.

Noah leaned over his shoulder.

6:15 — Depart. 6:30 — Reservation. 7:45 — Public Garden, weather permitting. 8:20 — Dessert option A. 8:20 — Dessert option B, if crowded.

"You made contingencies," Noah said.

Adrian locked the screen. "Boston weather is unreliable."

"This is not a date. This is a small military operation."

"You said to ask you out. You did not specify incompetence."

The restaurant was a narrow Italian place in the South End, warm with amber lamps and the scent of garlic. Adrian had requested a table away from the kitchen because Noah hated noise when he ate. He had checked the menu for cilantro, which Noah disliked, and shellfish, which made him itch. He had researched the artist whose exhibition Noah had mentioned wanting to see.

It was either the most romantic evening of Noah's life or a frightening display of data collection.

"Do you make files on everyone?" Noah asked.

"No."

"Only potential dates?"

"There have been no others."

Noah lowered his glass. "None?"

"None that reached dinner."

"People ask you out constantly."

"I say no."

"Why?"

Adrian looked impatient with the question. "I wasn't interested."

"Until me."

"Until you spilled acrylic paint on my only suit."

They had met in September when Noah, carrying three unfinished canvases through the residence hall, collided with Adrian outside the elevator. A jar of ultramarine had opened against Adrian's black jacket. Noah had babbled apologies while Adrian stared at the blue stain spreading over his chest.

The next morning, Adrian had brought him coffee.

"That made you interested?" Noah asked.

"You tried to clean it with hand sanitizer."

"I panicked."

"You ruined it beyond repair, then offered to paint me a replacement."

"That was charming."

"It was absurd." Adrian's mouth softened. "You were absurd."

Something warm opened beneath Noah's ribs.

Dinner passed without disaster. Adrian spoke more than usual, telling Noah about summers at his grandmother's house on the Croatian coast and the first time his father placed him in a racing shell at age nine. Noah told him about growing up outside Providence with a mother who saved every drawing and a father who believed art school was an expensive way to avoid employment.

When the check arrived, Noah reached for it.

Adrian covered the folder. "I invited you."

"We're both broke."

"I planned for this."

"Naturally. I buy dessert."

Outside, light snow had replaced the predicted rain. They walked toward the Public Garden beneath black branches strung with white lights. Their shoulders brushed once, then again.

Adrian did not take Noah's hand.

At the footbridge, Noah stopped. "Was hand-holding omitted from the schedule?"

"I didn't know if you wanted it."

"You could ask."

Adrian turned to face him. Snow caught in his dark hair. "May I hold your hand?"

"Yes."

Adrian's fingers closed around his. His palm was callused, warmer than Noah expected. He held carefully at first. When Noah tightened his grip, Adrian answered with a pressure that felt like relief.

They bought cannoli from a bakery near the Common and ate beneath an awning. Powdered sugar dusted Noah's coat. Adrian brushed it away, then let his fingers remain near Noah's throat.

"This was on your schedule," Noah said softly.

"What was?"

"The part where you look at my mouth."

Adrian's thumb touched his jaw. "I removed that from the written plan."

"Coward."

"Careful."

"Why?"

Adrian leaned closer but stopped before their breath became one. "Because I am trying very hard to let you set the pace."

Noah's pulse leaped. "Then I should probably do something useful with the authority."

He caught the front of Adrian's sweater and pulled him down.

The first kiss was brief and imperfect. Their noses brushed; Adrian inhaled sharply and did not move. For one terrible second Noah wondered if he had misread everything.

Then Adrian's hand settled at the back of his neck.

"Again?" Adrian asked.

"Yes."

The second kiss erased the cold. Adrian kissed with the concentration he brought to every task, as if Noah's mouth were a language he intended to learn without error. He kept one hand at Noah's neck and the other at his waist, firm but never trapping him.

Noah stepped closer. Adrian made a low sound against his mouth. Control fractured. The kiss deepened until a passing cyclist rang a bell and shouted for them to clear the sidewalk.

They broke apart.

Noah laughed into Adrian's shoulder. Adrian rested his forehead against Noah's temple, breathing hard.

"I failed to account for bicycles," he said.

"Your planning is slipping."

"You are distracting."

Back at the residence hall, Noah paused at his door. "Are you coming in?"

Desire moved openly across Adrian's face before discipline replaced it.

"Not tonight."

"Why?"

"I want you to wake tomorrow and know every choice was made without pressure."

Noah studied him, then kissed his cheek. "Good night, Adrian."

He closed the door. A second later, Adrian knocked.

When Noah opened it, Adrian kissed him once—hard, quick, devastating.

"That was not on the schedule," Noah said.

"No." Adrian stepped back. "I'm learning."

Inside his room, Noah leaned against the closed door and listened to Adrian's footsteps cross the suite. He had expected triumph after the kiss. Instead he felt the dizzy seriousness of being trusted with someone else's restraint.

His phone buzzed.

Adrian: Home safely.

Noah stared at the message, then opened his door. Adrian stood six feet away outside his own room, looking at the phone in his hand.

"We live in the same suite," Noah said.

"You ask for confirmation after dates."

"Usually the person travels farther than twelve feet."

"The principle is consistent."

Noah crossed the hall and kissed him again, softer this time.

"Now we're both home safely."

Adrian touched two fingers to his mouth after Noah stepped away. The unguarded wonder in his face followed Noah into sleep.
