"Paper Vows, Blood Debts" Chapter 5
Chapter 5: Underground Garage Chase
The tropical heat of Rio had vanished behind them by the time their private flight touched down back on the tarmac in São Paulo. Alistair had barely exchanged a single word with her during the entire return journey, his silence heavier and more suffocating than any threat he could have spoken aloud.
When the Gulfstream rolled to a complete stop, Alistair had ordered Rodrigo to transport her directly to the underground security basement of Vance Global headquarters.
He claimed he needed to verify the security protocols that had allowed her to breach his office safe, but Cassia knew it was merely a cage designed to keep her contained.
She walked across the damp, echoing concrete of the subterranean parking level with her chin held high, refusing to show a single trace of fear. Her tailored black pencil skirt and emerald blouse felt entirely out of place amidst the concrete pillars and the harsh, flickering industrial fluorescent lights overhead.
The heavy steel fire door clicked shut behind her with a definitive thud, echoing loudly through the massive empty garage. Before she could take three steps toward her private vehicle, the rhythmic dripping of water from an overhead pipe was shattered by a sharp, metallic click.
Cassia froze instantly, her instincts screaming a warning as a silenced gunshot pinged off the concrete floor inches from her stiletto heel. A second projectile tore through the air, embedding itself deeply into the driver side door of her sedan with a sickening crunch.
Panic surged hot and sharp through her veins, but years of living on the edge of corporate warfare kept her movements calculated and swift. She dropped low, scrambling behind the protective bulk of a reinforced concrete pillar as three masked figures emerged from the shadows near the ramp.
"Find her and clean up the mess," a harsh, distorted voice barked from across the garage, carrying the unmistakable coldness of a professional hitman. "The old man wants no loose ends left in this building."
Cassia pressed her back flat against the cold concrete, her hand instinctively reaching into her handbag for a weapon she did not possess. She realized with a sickening jolt of absolute terror that the internal security leak wasn't just a glitch in the firewall; it was a targeted assassination order.
Footsteps crunched closer on the concrete floor, the heavy combat boots pacing methodically around the opposite side of her pillar. She held her breath, squeezing her eyes shut as she prepared for the cold bite of metal against her skin.
Suddenly, the deafening roar of a high-powered engine echoed violently down the concrete ramp. Tires shrieked against the slick floor with a force that rattled the overhead pipes and blew a cloud of dust across the garage.
A midnight-black sports car came hurtling down the ramp at suicidal speed, its headlights blazing through the dim gloom like twin suns. The vehicle drifted sideways in a controlled, violent arc, plowing directly into the path of the advancing hitmen.

With a thunderous crash of metal on concrete, the sports car smashed into a structural pillar, pinning one of the gunmen against the concrete while the others scattered in blind panic. The passenger door flew open before the smoke had even cleared, revealing Alistair Vance with his sleeves rolled up and a dark, murderous fury carved into his face.
"Get in the car, Cassia!" Alistair roared over the screaming engine, his voice cutting through the chaos with absolute authority.
Cassia didn't hesitate for a single second; she scrambled out from behind her pillar and threw herself across the center console into the passenger seat. Alistair slammed his foot down on the accelerator, spinning the shattered vehicle in a tight circle and tearing toward the exit ramp.
Bullets slammed against the rear windshield of the sports car, spiderwebbing the reinforced glass into a thousand dangerous shards. Alistair kept his eyes locked on the narrow exit, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently along his blood-streaked cheekbone.
"Are you hit?" Alistair demanded sharply, his hand shooting across the console to shove her head down as another round pierced the metal frame.
"I'm fine!" Cassia shouted back, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she looked up at him through the haze of smoke. "Focus on the road!"
With a final burst of raw horsepower, the sports car burst out of the underground garage and onto the sunlit streets of São Paulo, leaving their attackers trapped far behind. Alistair veered the smoking vehicle into a quiet, tree-lined alleyway before cutting the engine completely, plunging them into sudden, heavy silence.
The front hood of the car hissed loudly, venting white steam into the cool afternoon air while the smell of burning rubber filled the cabin. Cassia sat frozen in her seat, her chest heaving as she stared at the fresh smear of blood staining Alistair's temple where flying glass had grazed his skin.
"You came back for me," Cassia whispered, the words slipping past her lips before she could stop them, the sudden realization washing over her with overwhelming clarity. "You weren't the one who ordered my father's ruin... it was your uncle all along."
Alistair turned his head slowly to look at her, his luminous amber eyes burning with an intense, unyielding heat that defied all logic. He didn't answer her verbally at first; instead, he reached across the console, his fingers brushing gently against the glass shards tangled in her dark hair.
"My uncle tried to eliminate you because you found the truth," Alistair said, his voice dropping into a harsh, ragged whisper. "And I would have burned this entire city to the ground before I let him touch a hair on your head."
Before Cassia could process the depth of his devotion, the small two-way radio clipped to the dashboard crackled to life with a burst of static. A low, mocking laugh echoed through the tiny cabin, instantly freezing the warm air between them.
"Well, well, nephew," Uncle Victor's voice hissed from the speaker, dripping with malicious satisfaction. "It seems your little stray dog survived the first trap. Enjoy your little victory while it lasts, because you're next on the list."
The radio cut out with a sharp click, leaving the sound of their ragged breathing echoing in the smoky interior of the vehicle. Alistair's expression darkened into something terrifying and ancient, his fingers curling into tight fists against the steering wheel.
Instead of pulling away, Alistair turned entirely toward her, his broad shoulders blocking out the rest of the world. His face was smeared with soot and blood, but his gaze was entirely fixed on her lips with a hunger that defied every instinct of self-preservation.
Inside the smoky interior of the vehicle, his face smeared with blood, Alistair cupped Cassia's face to capture her lips with ravenous urgency, hissing, "If we survive this, you are never escaping me again."
