"Paper Vows, Blood Debts" Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Midnight Incursion on Paulista
The rain began to lash against the reinforced glass of the fortieth floor, turning the neon skyline of São Paulo into a smear of bleeding light. Inside the boardroom, the air conditioning hummed a low, synthetic tune that did nothing to cool the suffocating heat generated by the two adversaries.
Cassia stood her ground, her posture straight as an iron rod, refusing to let the towering presence of Alistair Vance intimidate her. She had spent months preparing for this exact confrontation, compiling encrypted files and cross-referencing ledger entries until her eyes burned from exhaustion.
"You think you can come into my company and lecture me on corporate governance, Miss Sterling?" Alistair's voice was a low rumble, devoid of warmth, carrying the heavy weight of a man accustomed to compliance. "You are an auditor, nothing more. A transient accountant hired to look at numbers you were never meant to understand."
"Numbers don't lie, Mr. Vance, even when the men who own them try to bury them," Cassia shot back instantly, her tone sharp enough to draw blood. She stepped closer to the mahogany table, tapping a single manicured fingernail against the financial projection reports she had printed. "Look at subsidiary four-B. Look at the capital outflow disguised as operational expenses between fiscal quarters two and three. Your family's holding company is bleeding capital into phantom accounts, and if the Securities Commission audits this merger, you won't just lose the deal—you'll lose the entire empire."
Alistair didn't look down at the papers. His luminous amber eyes remained locked onto her stormy emerald gaze, studying her with a terrifying intensity.
There was a predatory fascination in the way he looked at her, as if he were a wolf trying to calculate the best angle to snap a stubborn lamb's neck, only to realize the lamb was carrying hidden blades.
"You speak with a lot of confidence for someone standing alone in an empty tower at three in the morning," Alistair noted softly, his voice dropping an octave as he began to close the distance between them.
"I am never alone," Cassia replied, though a fraction of her internal confidence wavered as he stepped around the corner of the heavy mahogany desk.
Miles away, tucked safely inside a nondescript apartment in the bohemian district of Vila Madalena, Mateus stared at his glowing triple-monitor setup with sweat beading on his forehead. The progress bar for the final data extraction ticked upward at a painfully slow rate:
92%... 93%... 94%...
"Come on, Cassia, keep him talking just two minutes longer," Mateus muttered to himself, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard as he deployed a secondary script to mask their digital footprints from Vance Global's network security team.
In the boardroom, Alistair took another deliberate step forward, invading her personal space until the crisp scent of his cedarwood and amber cologne completely overwhelmed her senses. He was taller than her by nearly a head, forcing her to tilt her chin upward to maintain eye contact.

"Who is helping you, Cassia?" Alistair asked, his breath brushing against her forehead as he towered over her. "An auditor doesn't dig this deep into legacy accounts without an inside key. Who gave you the clearance codes?"
"I am exceptionally good at my job," she whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she felt the heat radiating from his broad chest.
"No," Alistair murmured, his gaze dropping momentarily to her lips before flicking back up to her eyes with a dangerous dark spark. "You are reckless, brilliant, and entirely suicidal. That combination doesn't belong in a corporate cubicle."
He raised a hand, his long, aristocratic fingers hovering inches from her face before he slowly tucked a stray lock of chestnut-brown hair behind her ear. His knuckles brushed against her sensitive skin, sending a violent, electric shiver straight down her spine that she fought desperately to conceal.
"If you're trying to intimidate me into silence, Mr. Vance, your tactics are profoundly outdated," she retorted, though her voice lacked its previous venom, softening just enough to betray the internal chaos he was causing.
"I'm not trying to intimidate you, Cassia," Alistair replied, his voice dropping to a gravelly, intimate murmur that belonged in a bedroom rather than a glass-walled conference room. "I'm trying to figure out whether I should fire you, lock you in a secure vault, or kiss you until you forget why you hate me."
The audacity of his words knocked the wind straight out of her lungs. Her emerald eyes widened in genuine shock, the icy armor she had worn all evening cracking down the middle under the sudden heat of his attention.
"You arrogant bastard," she breathed out, her hands curling into tight fists at her sides to keep from reaching out to steady herself against him.
Alistair let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated in his chest, sounding entirely pleased with her reaction. He trapped her neatly between his body and the edge of the polished table, effectively cutting off any avenue of escape.
"You came here looking for a war, Miss Sterling, but you walked right into a trap of your own making," he murmured, his gaze holding her captive.
On Mateus's monitor in Vila Madalena, a bright green notification box flashed across the screen:
Transfer Complete. All files secured.
Mateus let out a loud sigh of relief, slamming his palms on his desk and whispering a triumphant curse to the empty room.
Unaware that her collaborator had just successfully downloaded the entire hidden archive of corporate fraud—including the mysterious offshore files linked directly to Alistair's estranged uncle—Cassia was entirely consumed by the intoxicating peril of the man standing inches from her.
She could feel the hard planes of his body pressing close, the unspoken tension between them snapping like an overloaded guitar string. For a heartbeat, she wanted nothing more than to lean into his warmth, to surrender to the strange, magnetic pull that defied every rule of logic and survival she had lived by.
Instead, she forced herself to lift her chin higher, using every ounce of her remaining willpower to look past his devastating charm and remember the ghost of her father's ruined legacy.
"I didn't come here to play games with you, Alistair," she said, using his first name for the very first time, letting it slip past her lips like a challenge.
Alistair's eyes flared with a sudden, intense hunger at the sound of his name on her tongue. The playful arrogance vanished from his expression, replaced by a deep, consuming obsession that looked terrifyingly permanent.
He didn't step back. Instead, he leaned in closer, his gaze locked onto her mouth as his long fingers slid slowly down the inside of her trembling wrist, mapping the frantic rhythm of her pulse.
"Tomorrow at nine, dress appropriately and accompany me to Rio, my Vice President," Alistair whispered against her skin, sealing her fate before she could find the breath to say no.
