"The Crippled Billionaire's Replacement Bride" Chapter 4

Chapter 4:

The heavy oak door of the private suite clicked shut, sealing Lyra in a room designed for comfort but feeling more like a temporary holding cell.

Instead of sleeping, she spent the midnight hours organizing her medical tools, sharpening her silver needles with meticulous care under the desk lamp.

At precisely two in the morning, a faint, rhythmic thud echoed through the floorboards beneath her feet, carrying a low vibration of agony.

It was a dull, mechanical scraping sound mixed with the heavy breathing of a man pushing his body far beyond its current biological limits.

Lyra slipped out of her bed quietly, sliding her leather pouch into her pocket before opening the private service door that led into the deeper recesses of the mansion.

She followed the sound down a narrow, hidden spiral staircase built into the stone walls, descending deep below the ground level of the estate.

The air grew damp and cold, carrying the sharp scent of ozone, old rubber, and the metallic tang of sweat mixed with frustration.

Pushing open a heavy, unlatched fire door, she stepped into a subterranean medical gymnasium that Julian and the board had deliberately kept off the main blueprints.

High-end rehabilitation equipment stood half-covered in dust, surrounding a makeshift training mat thrown directly onto the concrete floor.

In the center of the gloom sat Killian Thorne, drenched in cold sweat, dragging his uncooperative legs across the mat with a desperate, brutal intensity.

His custom wheelchair was parked a few feet away, acting as a mocking reminder of the cage he was desperately trying to tear apart with his bare hands.

"I thought I ordered you to stay locked in your suite and ignore my existence," Killian rasped, his voice cracking from sheer physical exhaustion.

He did not look up, continuing to haul his dead weight forward with his arms, his knuckles scraped raw against the unforgiving concrete floor.

"You did," Lyra replied, stepping out from the shadows of the doorway with her arms crossed over her chest, her expression entirely devoid of fear or sympathy.

"You also told me you were a master of your fate, yet here you are on the floor like a helpless animal thrashing in a trap."

Killian froze instantly, his breath hitching in his throat as a surge of blind, incandescent fury eclipsed the physical agony tearing through his muscles.

He whipped his head around, his deep sapphire eyes blazing with a murderous intent that could have shattered glass if looks carried physical weight.

"Get out of my sight before I make you regret the day you were born," Killian snarled, his voice vibrating with a lethal, broken pride.

"You think it is amusing to watch a cripple humiliate himself in the dark just to satisfy your pathetic savior complex."

Lyra did not flinch, nor did she step backward, instead closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides until she stood right over him.

"I don't find your misery amusing at all, Killian; I find it intensely tedious," Lyra said sharply, her tone as cold and precise as a scalpel.

"You are sweating blood trying to force dead nerves to fire while completely ignoring the chemical fog clouding your bloodstream."

Killian tried to push himself up on his elbows, his face twisted in a snarl of pure defiance as he glared up at the woman looking down at him.

"You know nothing about my medical condition, you arrogant little country girl," Killian spat out, his chest heaving with every ragged breath.

"The best specialists in the country examined these legs and declared them permanently severed from reality after the crash."

"Then the best specialists in the country are either incompetent fools or bought-and-paid-for liars," Lyra retorted, dropping to one knee right beside him.

Her hand darted out with lightning speed, catching his wrist before he could lash out and pinning his arm firmly against the cold concrete floor.

"Let go of me," Killian growled, struggling against her grip with a sudden burst of adrenaline, only to realize her fingers held the strength of iron.

"Look around this subterranean room, Killian, and tell me why every medical record stored in this cabinet has been systematically altered," Lyra demanded.

She used her free hand to point toward an open stainless-steel filing cabinet near the corner of the gym where a thick medical folder lay exposed.

Killian stopped struggling, his gaze shifting slowly from her fierce amber eyes toward the glowing display of documents sitting inside the open drawer.

"Those files were locked behind a biometric scanner that only my personal physician and my cousin Julian had access to," Killian whispered hoarsely.

"Dr. Jonathan Hayes assured me every week that my spinal column was beyond repair and that no further physical therapy would ever yield results."

"Dr. Hayes is a mercenary wearing a white coat," Lyra stated coldly, her voice dropping into a register that left no room for argument or doubt.

"He has been keeping your nervous system chemically suppressed with synthetic neurotoxins to ensure Julian maintains corporate control over the empire."

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the underground gym, broken only by the hum of the ventilation system filtering the damp basement air.

Killian stared at the open file, his mind processing the horrifying realization that his own trusted doctor had been slowly poisoning him from the inside out.

The rage that followed was unlike anything he had ever felt before, a cold, calculating fury that made his previous outbursts look like child's play.

"Julian," Killian whispered, the name tearing from his throat like a curse, carrying a promise of bloodshed that chilled the room instantly.

"He didn't just steal my company; he tried to turn my own body into a permanent prison cell funded by my own corporate accounts."

"And you were helping him by giving up and wallowing in self-pity on this dirty floor," Lyra added mercilessly, giving his wrist a sharp, grounding squeeze.

Killian turned his fierce gaze back to her, a strange, morbid curiosity flaring deep within his sapphire eyes as he looked at the fearless woman before him.

She didn't pity him, she didn't cower before his anger, and she looked at his betrayal not as a tragedy, but as a tactical puzzle to be solved.

"Why are you doing this, Lyra?" Killian asked, his voice losing its harsh edge and turning into a raw, gravelly puzzle of pure human confusion.

"You could take your settlement money and run back to your village tomorrow; why risk your neck fighting a war that isn't yours?"

Lyra leaned closer, her warm amber eyes locking onto his with an intensity that completely paralyzed any lingering doubts in his tormented mind.

"Because I despise seeing good machinery left to rust just because the operator forgot how to drive," Lyra whispered with a faint, daring smile.

Without waiting for his permission, she reached down and placed her palm firmly against his right knee, right over the heavy denim of his sweatpants.

Killian gasped aloud as a sharp, electric jolt of sensation shot straight up from his knee through his spine, making his entire upper body jerk.

"What... what did you do?" Killian breathed out, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief as he felt a genuine pulse of warmth beneath her palm.

"I told you the truth, Mr. Thorne," Lyra said softly, her fingers pressing into the vital pressure points with absolute confidence and surgical precision.

"Your legs aren't dead, and they certainly aren't paralyzed by a car crash; they are merely bound by chemical lies waiting to be shattered."
