"The Crippled Billionaire's Replacement Bride" Chapter 2
Chapter 2:
The heavy silence of the eastern corridor followed Lyra as she left the dark study behind, her footsteps echoing softly against the polished oak floor.
She walked toward the assigned guest suite without looking back, knowing that every single set of eyes in this fortress was watching her every move.
The brief encounter with Killian Thorne had confirmed every suspicion she harbored about the true nature of his condition.
His paralysis was not a permanent death sentence carved into shattered vertebrae, but rather a violent cage forged by prolonged trauma and chemical neglect.
The faint spasm she had witnessed in his right leg proved that his nervous system was desperately crying out for a spark of genuine intervention.
Morning light struggled to pierce through the thick, frost-covered windows of the grand foyer as Lyra descended the sweeping staircase for her first full day.
Waiting near the base of the stairs was a tall man built like a monolith, wearing a tailored security uniform that bore the subtle crest of the Thorne family.
His short-cropped blonde hair and sharp green eyes surveyed her with an intense, unyielding scrutiny that demanded immediate respect.
"You must be the country girl who thinks she can walk into the lions' den and play doctor," Lucas Vance said, his voice deep and rumbling with a warning tone.
"Mr. Thorne does not tolerate intruders, and he certainly does not need a naive bride trying to pry into matters that could get us all killed."
Lyra stopped on the third step from the bottom, meeting his suspicious gaze with an absolute stillness that immediately caught the head of security off guard.
"I did not come here to play games, Mr. Vance, nor did I ask to be locked inside this gloomy mausoleum," Lyra replied, her voice steady and crystal clear.
"If your master is too blind to see that his own household is rotting from the inside out, then someone with an actual pair of eyes has to step in."
Lucas narrowed his green eyes, noting the complete lack of trembling in her posture and the defiant intelligence flashing within her rare amber irises.
In all his years serving the Thorne family, every single visitor who crossed these doors had either cowered in fear or tried to steal what they could.
This unexpected bride from the rural hills possessed an entirely different kind of poison, one that might either save the master or burn them all to ashes.
"Watch your step around the west wing, Miss Sinclair," Lucas muttered quietly, stepping aside just enough to let her pass toward the grand dining hall.
"Julian Thorne and his corporate vultures pay very close attention to everyone who enters this property, and they do not care who gets crushed in the crossfire."
Lyra gave him a brief, acknowledging nod before walking past him toward the heavy double doors of the dining room where a cold breakfast awaited her.

The long mahogany table was set for twelve people, yet she sat entirely alone at the very edge of the vast expanse of polished wood.
A timid maid with downcast eyes scurried forward to pour a cup of bitter black coffee, trembling so violently that the porcelain saucer rattled against the silver tray.
"Is Mr. Thorne always this charming in the mornings?" Lyra asked conversationally, taking a slow sip of the steaming liquid without breaking her calm demeanor.
"He... he hasn't left that study in months, ma'am," the maid whispered, glancing nervously toward the hallway as if uttering his name summoned a ghost.
"The doctors say his mind went dark the day his legs did, but the staff knows better because we hear him breaking things when the pain gets too loud."
Before Lyra could press for more details, the heavy doors of the dining hall swung open with a sharp, aggressive creak that silenced the trembling servant instantly.
Lucas Vance stood in the entryway, his expression tight and guarded as he looked directly across the massive table toward the uninvited young woman.
"Mr. Thorne requires your presence in the study immediately," Lucas announced, though his tone suggested he was delivering a summons to a battlefield rather than a breakfast.
"He is in one of his darker moods today, so I suggest you tread very carefully if you intend to walk out of that room upright."
Lyra set her coffee cup down with a deliberate, soft click, wiping her fingers on a linen napkin before standing up from her chair with unhurried grace.
"Tell your master that he can wait a few more minutes for his medicine," Lyra said to Lucas, a faint, confident smile touching the corners of her lips.
"A patient who throws tantrums only exhausts his own nervous system, and I prefer my subjects calm before we begin the real work."
Lucas stared at her in stunned silence for a second, wondering if this delicate-looking woman had completely lost her mind or if she genuinely possessed a secret weapon.
Without waiting for another escort, Lyra turned her back on the dining hall and walked resolutely down the long corridor toward the heavy doors of the private study.
The air grew noticeably colder as she approached the threshold, carrying that familiar, oppressive scent of antiseptic, aged whiskey, and suppressed fury.
She did not bother to knock this time, turning the heavy brass handle and pushing the solid mahogany doors open with a decisive, echoing shove.
Inside the cavernous room, the single desk lamp cast long, jagged shadows across the floor, making the sprawling bookshelves look like towering prison bars.
Killian Thorne sat in the exact same spot at the center of the room, his broad shoulders tense and his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles strained against his skin.
His deep sapphire eyes locked onto her the moment she crossed the threshold, radiating a murderous glare designed to crush any remaining courage in her chest.
"Who gave you permission to wander the estate and question my security detail like you own this place?" Killian growled, his voice vibrating with lethal intensity.
"You think because you managed to survive one night under my roof that you have somehow earned the right to act as the mistress of this house."
Lyra closed the heavy doors behind her with a soft click, walking across the Persian rug until she stood right in front of his massive mahogany desk.
She rested both hands lightly on the polished wooden surface, leaning forward slightly to bridge the physical distance between them with absolute fearlessness.
"I didn't ask to be your wife, Killian, and I certainly didn't ask to babysit a grown man who hides behind a desk because his legs stopped working," Lyra said sharply.
"If you brought me back here just to shout empty threats at the walls, you are wasting my time and yours."
Killian slammed both fists down onto the armrests of his wheelchair, his chest heaving as a dangerous, volatile rage flared brightly within his frozen gaze.
"Get out of my sight right now before I forget that you are a Sinclair and have you thrown out onto the freezing streets naked!" he bellowed.
Lyra did not flinch, nor did she step backward an inch, meeting his explosive fury with a chilling, surgical composure that completely disarmed his terrifying aura.
"You can shout until you lose your voice, and you can order me around all you want," Lyra replied, her voice dropping to a smooth, unshakeable whisper.
"But you need to understand one fundamental truth about this house, Mr. Thorne: I decide when and where I move, and I am not going anywhere."
