"A Waltz of Scars" Chapter 10
Chapter 10: Blood and Rain
The reinforced steel ceiling of the underground complex shattered inward in a shower of white-hot shrapnel and heavy concrete debris.
Through the billowing smoke, Liam Vance dropped into the blood-stained arena like an avenging deity carved from black ice and pure rage.
His ice-blue eyes scanned the enclosure, locking instantly onto the crimson blood trickling down Scarlett's pale temple.
The sight of her wound severed the last remaining shred of his restraint, unleashing an ungodly wave of dark fury that made the surrounding mercenaries recoil in terror.
Outside the perimeter, Marcus coordinated the tactical grid with lethal precision, his sniper rifle eliminating the remaining watchtower guards in synchronized succession.
"Take them all down," Liam commanded, his voice a low, gravelly roar that vibrated through the damp air and rattled the chain-link fences.
Before the lead mercenary could raise his rifle, Liam closed the distance in a blur of motion, his heavy hands locking around the man's throat with crushing force.
Scarlett pushed away from the cage wall, wiping the warm blood from her brow as she steadied her grip on her stiletto blade.
"You took your time getting here, Vance," Scarlett called out over the chaos, her voice carrying a sharp, breathless edge of adrenaline.
"I was clearing the traffic, little wolf," Liam replied coldly, tossing the lifeless mercenary aside like a broken doll before lunging into the next wave of attackers.
The arena erupted into a symphony of violent, cinematic action as the two apex predators formed an impenetrable wall of mutual survival.
Amidst the torrential downpour that poured through the blasted roof, Liam and Scarlett fought back-to-back with terrifying, synchronized efficiency.
Scarlett moved like a ghost through the shadows, slipping inside her opponents' guards to drive her blade home with surgical, cold-blooded precision.
Liam fought like an unbridled monster, tearing through the remaining enemy commanders barehanded as his protective fury reached terrifying, god-tier heights.
He ripped an assault rifle from a mercenary's grip and snapped the barrel in half with his bare hands before driving his elbow into the man's chest.
"Watch your left flank!" Scarlett warned sharply, ducking low to sweep a heavy-booted mercenary off his feet before slamming her heel into his collarbone.
"My flank is entirely secure as long as you keep your back pressed against mine," Liam rumbled, his chest heaving as he hurled another combatant across the concrete floor.
The raw, blood-soaked shared survival stripped away the final defensive barriers around their hardened hearts, forging an unbreakable and desperate bond between them.
There were no more tactical maneuvers or psychological games left to play, only the raw, electric truth of two monsters who belonged to one another.
"Dorian is heading for the drainage tunnels!" Marcus reported urgently through the earpiece, his voice cutting through the gunfire and the roar of the rain.
Across the blood-soaked arena, a cornered Dorian Vance stumbled toward the open storm drain, his face twisted in a mask of manic, cowardly desperation.
"You cannot escape me, brother!" Liam roared, starting to charge across the debris-strewn floor toward the retreating traitor.
Dorian laughed hysterically, clutching a small, heavily modified detonator in his shaking, bloodied hand.
"If I cannot have the syndicate, nobody will!" Dorian shrieked, his thumb slamming down onto the biometric activation switch of a remote biological containment bomb.
A high-pitched, deafening emergency alarm wailed through the subterranean docks as the digital timer flashed a merciless countdown from ten seconds.
"Get down!" Liam screamed, abandoning his pursuit of Dorian to lunge backward across the blood-slicked concrete.
Before Scarlett could react, Liam threw his massive frame over her, shielding her body entirely with his own broad chest and broad shoulders.
The explosive shockwave detonated with a blinding flash of white light, sending a wall of searing heat and pulverized concrete tearing through the facility.
Sharp shards of reinforced glass rained down from the shattered overhead fixtures like a deadly waterfall around them.
Liam swallowed the full impact of the explosion against his back, his heavy wool coat absorbing the blistering heat of cyclical fire.
As the dust and smoke settled over the ruined docks, Dorian vanished completely into the dark, churning depths of the storm drain.
Liam remained motionless over Scarlett, his heavy breathing ragged against her neck as glass continued to rain down upon their shielded shelter.
