"A Waltz of Scars" Chapter 6
Chapter 6: The Broken Engagement
The cold weight of the Montgomery military data chip still rested against Scarlett's palm as Marcus detonated the digital bomb across every major financial news network.
The secure terminal in Marcus's remote safehouse fed the encrypted transaction logs straight to the public domain, exposing Julian's deep involvement in corporate money-laundering alongside Elena.
Within minutes, the screens in every high-end lounge, stock exchange, and penthouse across the city flashed with the undeniable proof of their illicit syndicate ties.
Julian sat alone in his private executive suite, watching his family's century-old empire disintegrate into digital ash before his very eyes.
His phone rang incessantly with demands from board members, federal investigators, and terrified creditors, but he lacked the strength to answer any of them.
The devastating realization of his complete and utter ruin settled over him like a shroud of freezing lead.
Desperation clawed at his throat, driving him to grab his car keys and race toward the grand plaza where society elites gathered for a scheduled charity gala.
He needed to find Cynthia, or find a microphone, or do anything to convince the world that he was merely a pawn manipulated by Elena and the syndicate.
Instead, when Julian burst through the glass doors of the ballroom, he was greeted not by sympathetic allies, but by a wall of glaring reporters and flashing camera strobes.
"Mr. Montgomery, is it true that your company funded illegal biotech human trafficking?" a ruthless journalist shouted, shoving a microphone inches from his face.
Julian stumbled backward, shielding his eyes from the blinding light as the heavy security guards of the venue blocked his path forward.
"It is a lie!" Julian screamed over the din of shouting voices, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "I was forced into this by Elena Vance!"
Across the glittering room, Cynthia stood frozen near the champagne fountain, her custom couture gown suddenly feeling like a straitjacket.
She watched her fiancé publicly implode on live television, realizing with sickening clarity that her golden cage had just been set on fire.
"Julian, tell them it is not true!" Cynthia shrieked, pushing her way through the throng of reporters with wild, desperate eyes.
Julian turned his bloodshot gaze toward her, his face twisting into an expression of pure, unadulterated loathing that he no longer bothered to hide.
"Get away from me, you pathetic parasite," Julian snarled, his voice carrying clearly across the live microphones. "You and your stolen identity ruined my life."
The entire ballroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence as the public humiliation of the fake heiress reached its absolute climax.
Cynthia staggered back as if she had been physically struck across the face, her manicured fingers trembling violently at her sides.

"You cannot do this to me," Cynthia whispered, tears spilling over her mascara-stained cheeks as the surrounding elites sneered at her downfall.
"Mr. Montgomery has formally announced the immediate termination of your engagement," another reporter announced mercilessly, shoving a tablet into her face.
Stripped of her status, her multi-million dollar engagement ring, and her social standing in one brutal sweep, Cynthia experienced a catastrophic public meltdown.
She let out a high-pitched, agonizing wail of pure despair, collapsing to the marble floor while her expensive diamond necklace unclasped and scattered across the ground.
"This is all her fault!" Cynthia sobbed hysterically, clawing at the polished tiles as the security guards moved in to drag her out of the building.
None of the watching socialites offered a hand to help her, stepping aside with cold disgust as the fake princess was forcefully removed from polite society.
She was tossed onto the wet pavement outside the grand plaza like discarded trash, the rain soaking through her ruined silk dress.
Her mind fractured completely under the crushing weight of her defeat, every ounce of her former arrogance curdling into absolute, foaming hatred toward Scarlett.
She hated Scarlett for returning, she hated Liam Vance for protecting her, and she hated the world for stripping away her stolen throne.
Crawling into the back seat of a dark, anonymous town car parked in the alley, Cynthia pulled a burner phone from the hidden lining of her clutch.
Her fingers shook so badly she could barely punch in the numbers, but pure, unadulterated malice guided her muscle memory.
She dialed the encrypted emergency frequency that Dorian Vance had whispered to her during their secret pact in the shadows.
"This is Cynthia Thorne," she gasped into the receiver, her voice dropping into a hoarse, venomous rasp. "I am ready to offer my absolute allegiance to Dr. Alistair's underground lab."
A cold, mechanical voice on the other end of the line confirmed the transfer code, welcoming her into the inner circle of the biological weapons division.
Cynthia hung up the phone and stared out the rain-slicked window, her breath fogging up the glass as a terrifying smile stretched across her lips.
She dug her long fingernails so deep into her own palms that blood welled up, mixing with the rain water dripping from her hair.
"I will tear you limb from limb, Scarlett," Cynthia whispered into the empty car, her voice echoing with the promise of a bloody, unforgiving war.
