"A Waltz of Scars" Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Shadow Over the Estate

The midnight fog clung to the wrought-iron gates of the abandoned Thorne estate like a shroud of damp wool.

Scarlett moved through the overgrown courtyard with the silent, predatory grace of an animal that had learned to hunt in the dark.

The grand manor of her childhood had been reduced to a skeleton of charred timbers and peeling masonry by a decade of calculated neglect.

She needed her mother personal journals, the only surviving ledgers that detailed the biological conspiracies orchestrated by the council.

Her dark combat boots crunched quietly over fragments of shattered stained glass as she slipped through the blown-out mahogany front doors.

Inside, the air tasted of ancient dust and damp rot, heavy with the phantom memories of a family erased by greed.

Scarlett flicked on a heavy-duty tactical flashlight, its beam cutting through the gloom to illuminate the grand staircase where she used to play.

She bypassed the ruined parlor and headed straight for the private study, knowing the floorboards beneath the heavy oak desk concealed a wall safe.

Her fingers worked quickly over the rusted combination dial, relying on a childhood memory that had never truly faded from her mind.

With a low, metallic click, the small iron door swung outward, revealing a stack of leather-bound journals wrapped in faded silk.

She reached inside and pulled them free, her chest tightening with a mix of fierce triumph and old, buried grief.

Before she could tuck the ledgers into her tactical harness, a razor-sharp whisper of displaced air hissed from the darkness above.

Survival instinct overrode thought, and Scarlett violently threw her body to the left as a poisoned stiletto embedded itself deep into the wood of the desk.

From the shadows of the collapsed ceiling joists, a masked assassin dropped silently to the floor, drawing a heavy hunting knife with lethal intent.

Scarlett did not panic, her right hand instantly flying to the garter sheath where her own blade rested.

Before her fingers could wrap around the hilt, a massive, towering shadow detached itself from the doorway with terrifying speed.

Liam Vance moved like an avalanche in the dark, crossing the study in two long strides before the assassin could even adjust his grip.

A heavy, gloved hand clamped around the assassin throat with bone-crushing force, lifting the grown man off the floor as if he weighed nothing.

"You stepped on the wrong turf, ghost," Liam rumbled, his voice a deep, gravelly vibration filled with absolute, glacial fury.

The assassin clawed frantically at Liam’s thick leather forearm, his legs kicking wildly as oxygen was ruthlessly cut off from his lungs.

With a sickening snap of cartilage, Liam casually tossed the limp body aside, letting it crash heavily onto the splintered hardwood floor.

Scarlett stood frozen for a fraction of a second, her hand still hovering near her thigh as she stared up at the syndicate lord.

"I did not ask for your help, Vance," Scarlett snapped, her voice carrying a sharp edge as she stepped back from him.

Liam did not care about her verbal defiance, his ice-blue eyes scanning her body with a fierce, possessive panic that he barely kept contained.

"You are going to get yourself killed playing games in a graveyard, little wolf," Liam growled, closing the space between them in an instant.

"This is my family estate, and I handle my own ghosts," Scarlett retorted, pushing against his chest with both hands.

Her palms pressed flat against the solid wall of muscle beneath his black wool coat, feeling the terrifyingly steady beat of his heart.

Liam refused to budge an inch, his heavy frame absorbing her push without the slightest sign of yielding.

"Your family is dead, and this estate belongs to the dirt now," Liam murmured, his gaze dropping to the leather journals clutched in her grip.

"And yet you followed me here," Scarlett challenged, narrowing her emerald eyes as she searched his frozen expression for weakness.

"I go wherever my property goes," Liam replied smoothly, his voice dropping an octave as a dangerous heat flared in his blue eyes.

On the floor beside them, the dying assassin let out a wet, rattling gasp, blood pooling beneath his shattered neck.

Scarlett stepped around Liam’s imposing stance and knelt beside the dying man, pressing the blade of her stiletto softly against his collarbone.

"Who sent you?" Scarlett demanded, her tone dropping into a chilling register that commanded absolute obedience. "Was it the council?"

The assassin coughed up a spray of dark blood, his masked face twisting into a hideous, mocking grin as he stared up at the ceiling.

"Aurelia... sends her regards," the man wheezed, his body convulsing once before his eyes rolled back and he breathed his last.

Scarlett’s expression hardened into pure stone at the mention of the conservative matriarch who had orchestrated her childhood exile.

"Aurelia Vance," Scarlett whispered the name like a death sentence, her grip tightening around the handle of her knife.

Liam looked down at the dead man, a dark storm gathering behind his ice-blue eyes as he recognized the signature style of his aunt's personal executioners.

"It seems my family has been leaving loose ends in your past," Liam said softly, stepping closer until he towered over her crouched form.

"Your aunt is going to pay for every year I spent starving in the slums," Scarlett replied, standing up with terrifying calm.

She turned to push past him toward the exit, but Liam moved with lightning speed to block her only path out of the study.

"You are not hunting an elder of the syndicate alone," Liam ordered, his tone brooking no argument whatsoever.

"Watch me," Scarlett hissed, trying to dart around his left side with a sudden burst of agile movement.

Liam anticipated the feint effortlessly, grabbing her waist with one powerful arm and hauling her bodily against his frame.

She gasped at the sudden, breathtaking impact, her back colliding with his solid chest as he spun her around in a single fluid motion.

Liam pinned Scarlett firmly against the weathered stone wall of the study, trapping her between his broad shoulders and the ancient masonry.

His face was mere inches from hers, their breath mingling in the cold, dusty air of the ruined manor.

"Stay away from the crossfire, little wolf," Liam whispered, his voice a low, gravelly rasp vibrating directly against the shell of her ear.

Scarlett tried to lift her knee to strike him, but Liam caged her legs between his thighs, rendering her lower body completely immobilized.

"Let me go, Liam," Scarlett demanded, her emerald eyes blazing with unbridled fury as she glared up at his unyielding face.

"I told you once before," Liam murmured, his lips brushing dangerously close to the sensitive curve of her jawline. "You belong to me."
