"The Retired Assassin's Sugar Baby Contract" The Boy with the Chipped Tooth
Leander shut the office door.
I counted twenty-seven photographs.
In one, I was fifteen and sleeping beneath an airport departure board. In another, I stood outside a clinic in Berlin with my arm in a sling. Whoever took that picture had been close enough to see the split in my lip.
"How long?" I asked.
"Eleven years."
I turned.
He did not reach for me.
"You hired people to follow a child."
"I hired people to find the boy who protected me."
The room tilted toward an old corridor.
A winter storm. Radiators clanging. A small boy in a wool coat trailing three steps behind me.
"Leo," I said.
Leander looked away. Color touched the tops of his ears.
I laughed once. It came out broken. "You were Leo?"
"I was eight."
"You cried every time I walked too fast."
"You abandoned me in hallways."
"You followed me into them."
The memory opened all at once.
Leander's family had lost him during a charity event. The police brought him to St. Vincent's for one night. Weather and paperwork turned one night into four months.
Older boys cornered him near the stairs. They said his parents were never coming back.
He called them liars.
They shoved him against the wall.
I had been twelve, hungry, and already learning that kindness made a person visible. I stepped between them anyway.
Nobody touches him without going through me.
Afterward, Leo pressed his face against my shirt and refused to stop crying. I gave him the peppermint I had saved for a week.
For months, he followed me everywhere.
Then a black town car arrived. His mother took him home.
Soon after, two recruiters from the network came for me.
"I went back," Leander said. "They told me you'd been placed with a family."
"That was the cover story."
"I know."
His voice scraped thin.
"I spent years searching. By the time I found the truth, Rowan Hale had vanished. Only Nocturne remained."
I looked at the wall again.
"You knew before Prague."
"A year before."
"You commissioned the contract to bring me close."
"The target deserved it."
"That isn't the point."
"I know."
"You watched me. Paid me. Built a fake lost-lover story."
"The photograph was a stock image."
"I gathered that."
He removed his glasses and set them on the desk. Without them, exhaustion showed under his eyes.
"I wanted you safe," he said. "I also wanted you near me. Those are not the same wish, and I won't pretend either one was noble."
There he was.
Not the lost boy. Not the polished executive.
The man who controlled half the city and knew exactly how dangerous wanting could become.
I picked up a peppermint.
"You could have said hello."
"Would you have believed me?"
"No."
"Would you have come home with me?"
"For fifty thousand a month? Absolutely."
His mouth twitched.
I unwrapped the candy. "Why keep the photographs?"

"At first, proof."
"Later?"
His gaze found mine.
"Proof you were alive."
The peppermint cracked between my teeth.
Outside, a car entered the drive. Security lights swept the ceiling.
Leander put his glasses back on.
"Acheron," he said. "The name belonged to the network that recruited you."
My jaw stopped.
"No. My network was called the Meridian Program."
"Meridian was the training division. Acheron supplied the children."
He opened a safe behind one of the photographs and removed a black ledger.
"My father funded them."
The first page carried the Cross seal.
Dates. Payments. Properties.
St. Vincent's appeared over and over.
"When I inherited the company, I found fragments," Leander said. "I shut down the accounts I could identify. Someone rebuilt the routes beneath legitimate freight."
"Adrian."
"Perhaps."
"You don't sound surprised."
"I don't survive by being surprised."
"You got shot at your own gate."
"A disappointing morning."
I walked to the window. Adrian had arrived below with two men.
One wore a mirrored motorcycle helmet beneath his arm.
"Leander."
He followed my gaze.
The rider looked up at us.
Then he drew a gun.
I drove Leander down as bullets ripped through the glass.
The office filled with wind.
Adrian ran for cover.
The rider did not shoot at him.
I fired twice. The first round struck the motorcycle. The second cut the rider's shoulder.
He escaped through the east gate.
Adrian burst into the office with his weapon drawn.
"You," I said.
"Not now." Leander rose beside me, bloodless fury in every line. "Lock the property. Celeste takes control of internal security. No one leaves."
Adrian stared at him. "You're choosing this man over family?"
Leander stepped through broken glass until only inches separated them.
"I'm choosing the man who pushed me out of the bullet's path."
He looked at the untouched rider's escape route.
"Family should consider why he had to."
Security took Adrian's weapon and escorted him east.
Leander remained amid the broken glass.
Wind lifted papers from his desk and carried my photographs across the room. One struck my chest.
Twelve-year-old me stared from the paper, thin and suspicious.
Leander bent to gather the others.
"Leave them."
He stopped.
"You don't get to put me back in order."
His hand closed around a photograph.
"All right."
I crossed the room and shut the ruined blinds. It did nothing against the wind.
"Why the sugar-baby contract?"
He looked at the page in his hand. "You would refuse protection."
"Correct."
"You would refuse charity."
"Violently."
"You respect transactions."
"Usually."
"I offered one."
"With a lie at the center."
"Yes."
He placed the photograph facedown.
No excuse.
That simple admission scraped deeper than a defense.
"Did you expect me to sleep with you?"
"No."
The answer came too fast.
I lifted an eyebrow.
"I hoped," he said. "I did not expect."
"And the stock photograph?"
"Cowardice."
"The feared Leander Cross."
"I was eight again."
His voice dropped on the last word.
I saw the wool coat, the chipped tooth, the small fist knotted in my shirt.
Then I saw the man who had purchased an exit for me and hidden the lock inside kindness.
Both were true.
"I can't decide what to do with you," I said.
"You don't have to decide tonight."
He moved toward the door.
I caught his sleeve.
"Stay."
He looked at my hand.
"That isn't forgiveness."
"I know."
"And it isn't a contract amendment."
"I know."
"If you say that again, I'll throw you through the window."
He glanced at the missing glass.
"That threat has lost structural force."
The laugh escaped me.
He smiled carefully, as if sudden movement might scare it away.
We sat on the floor against the desk while security sealed the windows with temporary boards. Leander told me what he remembered from St. Vincent's.
He remembered me stealing extra socks for him.
I remembered him losing every pair.
He remembered hiding beneath my bed during storms.
I remembered kicking him in the face the first night.
"You apologized," he said.
"I gave you ice."
"For you, that was an apology."
At dawn, Mrs. Alvarez brought coffee and found us shoulder to shoulder beneath an emergency blanket.
She took in the photographs, the boards, and Leander's hand curled near mine.
"Breakfast in twenty minutes."
"We were shot at," I said.
"Then you will need eggs."
When she left, Leander leaned his head against the desk.
"She terrifies cabinet ministers."
"Sensible men."
His fingers brushed mine.
This time, neither of us pretended it was accidental.
