"Cold Boss Is My Masked Daddy" Chapter 64
With Samuel suspended, his aunt, Eleanor, stepped in to oversee project control. She wasn't an IPO specialist and lacked the necessary legal certifications, so the operational weight of the Synapse AI listing shifted onto Amanda and Julian.
Amanda was a seasoned pro, but the pressure on Julian's end was immense. Between his core responsibilities, he was managing the client's nerves and fending off coordinated attacks from the media and rival firms.
The review process dragged into a grueling cycle of inquiries, specific audits, and endless document revisions. Julian survived on four hours of sleep, trapped in that jagged, vibrating space between total exhaustion and hyper-focus.
The firm granted them a single day off, but Julian couldn't settle. He found himself back at his desk by lunch, only to find Leo and Emma already there. They shared a grim, tired smile and went back to the grind. It felt like a month-long final exam; until the results were in, sleep was a luxury they couldn't afford.
The difficulty spiked as they entered the inquiry stage, where even the most practiced rehearsals couldn't prepare them for the volatility of the questions.
Whenever Julian felt the floor falling out from under him, he remembered that afternoon with Samuel.
Samuel's gaze had been heavy and deliberate. "Difficulties are coming. While I'm unable to work, I need you to carry a portion of this burden. Can you do that, Julian?".
Julian's voice had hitched then. "Will you be okay?".
"I'll be fine," Samuel had replied. "Don't be afraid".
Julian had forced the tremors out of his hands and nodded. "I'm not afraid".
They weren't alone. With Amanda leading and a team of newly permanent analysts holding the line, the project marched forward. After countless all-nighters and mountains of printed evidence, they finally reached the hearing.
The Listing Committee delivered the verdict: Suspension of Voting.
A rival firm, Neo-Data AI, had filed twelve whistleblower reports—citing data security leaks and patent infringement. The committee ordered Synapse AI to resolve the issues before reapplying.
The atmosphere in the war room curdled. Amanda tore into the client, her voice echoing through the suite as she cursed their incompetence. They'd been assured the personnel shifts were a non-issue, only for those same people to weaponize proprietary data against the IPO.
Emma was in tears. Jordan's eyes were raw and red. Even James, who had planned to quit months ago, looked devastated. Julian, as the coordinator, couldn't afford a public breakdown. "It's just a postponement," he told them, his voice a practiced mask of calm. "We'll clear the second hearing".
He held it together until noon, then escaped to the rooftop.
He let the first sob break. He'd thought he'd grown, that he'd finally become the kind of man who could handle the weight of Apex Capital, but the reality hit him: he was just a person, and his individual power was a drop in a very deep ocean.

Julian hated the lack of control. He was a man of clean lines—organized shelves, a surgical schedule, a mapped-out life. He used self-discipline as a leash for the world. Now, the leash had snapped. He felt like a desert traveler told the oasis was fifty kilometers away, only to arrive and find it had been moved another twenty.
The uncertainty was lethal.
He remembered Samuel's warning: Even the most powerful, most controlling person cannot account for everything. Samuel had lived in this state of loss of control for years; Julian wondered how the man survived the suffocating weight of it.
He gripped his phone but didn't send the text. Samuel was in the center of his own storm; he didn't need Julian's grief on top of it. Julian remembered the day the investigation team had raided the executive office, the cold precision of the questioning. He just needed to compose himself and keep walking.
Julian wiped his eyes and turned, only to stop short. A pair of familiar, expensive leather shoes stood at the edge of his vision. He looked up. Samuel was standing there.
"You're back?" Julian blinked, stunned. "Is the investigation over?".
"I'm back," Samuel said. "You've worked hard, Julian".
Julian thought of the favor Samuel had asked before he left. He had failed the mission. He lowered his head, shoulders slumped. "I'm sorry. We didn't pass the hearing".
"I already spoke with Amanda," Samuel said, giving a slow shake of his head. "It isn't your fault. Don't blame yourself".
Julian's breath hitched. He'd spent months being the one to offer comfort to everyone else, forgetting how much he craved it for himself. Seeing Samuel again broke the last of his defenses. He tried to swallow the tears, but his eyes were already raw.
Samuel held out a handkerchief, his tone impossibly gentle. "Don't hold it in. Tell me where the grievance is".
There was no specific grievance; Julian was just tired of being responsible. He took the fabric, his fingers tightening around it. "I'm fine. I know what to do. I'm just... it's just a moment. I'll be fine".
Samuel didn't push. He simply stood with him as the wind whipped across the roof. The air was thick with the humidity of a New York City summer. Within minutes, the heat began to bleed through their clothes, stripping away the polished, elite armor of the office until they were just two people standing in the damp air.
Julian's eyes looked wet and red, as if he might dissolve at any second. But as the sun beat down, the moisture evaporated from his skin.
Julian's phone buzzed. He checked the screen, his expression shifting back into professional focus. "A client," he said, looking a bit sheepish. "I have to head down".
Samuel offered a sharp nod. Julian took the call and started toward the door.
Samuel watched the boy's retreating back and felt a sharp, sudden pang of realization: Julian Hale didn't need him to lead the way anymore..
