"Vocal Resonance: His Hidden Muse" Chapter 5
Chapter 5 — The Tailored Traitor
The morning sun over Santa Monica was blinding, stripping away the velvety safety of the dark and replacing it with a harsh, unforgiving reality. Inside the leather-scented interior of the black Cadillac Escalade, the silence was suffocating.
Kaelen Thorne sat in the backseat, his jaw tightly clenched, his icy blue eyes fixed out the window. He was completely horrified by his own actions from the night before.
The memory of himself kneeling in a pitch-black hotel suite, weeping with his forehead pressed against a stranger’s knees, made his blood run cold with intense self-loathing. He felt exposed, weak, and utterly pathetic. To regain his sense of control, he needed a target.
Melody sat right beside him, her round frame squeezed into the corner, keeping as much physical distance between them as possible. She was wearing her favorite vintage corduroy jacket over her usual oversized clothes—a soft, faded brown piece her father had given her years ago. Her iPad was clasped in her lap, her eyes fixed on his daily schedule.
"Give me the lyric changes for the acoustic tracks," Kaelen suddenly demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, volatile growl.
"Yes, Mr. Thorne," Melody murmured, her voice falling back into its fragile, stuttering daytime rhythm. "They’re... they’re right here on the digital drive."
She leaned forward to hand him the tablet. As she did, Kaelen reached out with unnecessary force. Instead of grabbing the screen, his fingers intentionally hooked into the pocket of her vintage jacket. With a sharp, aggressive jerk born of pure malice, he ripped the tablet away.
Riiip.
The sound of tearing fabric was loud and sickening inside the quiet car. The pocket of her beloved jacket was completely shredded, hanging by a few loose threads, exposing the white lining beneath.
Melody froze, the breath leaving her lungs in a painful gasp. She stared at the ruined fabric, her eyes stinging with hot, sudden tears. It was a malicious violation of her personal boundaries, a deliberate act of cruelty meant to remind her of her place.
"Oops," Kaelen scoffed, his face a mask of cold, unbothered arrogance as he looked at her. "My hand slipped. But honestly, typing machine, I did you a favor. That piece of trash belongs in a dumpster, not in my car. Buy a new one with your next paycheck."
Melody swallowed the thick lump of humiliation rising in her throat. She slowly drew her arms back, folding her hands over her ruined jacket, and forced herself to look out her own window. She didn't say a word. She silently endured the heartbreak, because she knew something he didn't.
You think you’re the master, Kaelen, she thought, her jaw tightening as a cold, vindictive resolve settled deep within her chest. Just wait until the sun goes down.
At 1:00 AM, Kaelen Thorne was pacing the floor of his luxury dressing room, his breath coming in short, erratic gasps. The high-pitched static in his ears was a roaring furnace tonight, but his psychological distress was far worse.

The guilt from his daytime cruelty, combined with a desperate, frantic need for his nighttime sanctuary, was driving him insane.
He lunged for his phone, booted up Aethel, and authorized the secure private line. The $10,000 fee was processed instantly.
The line clicked open. The electric-blue soundwave appeared on his screen.
"Siren," Kaelen gasped into the receiver, his voice trembling with immediate relief. "Siren, thank God. I need you. The static is burning my brain. Please, just speak to me."
Silence.
The blue soundwave on Kaelen's screen remained perfectly flat. A cold, unyielding straight line.
"Siren?" Kaelen’s breath hitched, a sudden spike of panic piercing through his chest. "Are you there? Please, I’m sorry I’m late. Just say something. Anything."
Nothing. Absolute, suffocating silence greeted him.
Miles away in her dark bedroom, Melody sat completely still before her microphone. She could hear his frantic breathing, his shaking voice, his absolute desperation.
She intentionally kept her lips sealed, giving him the agonizing silent treatment. She was using her nighttime leverage to completely crush his daytime ego.
"Please!" Kaelen cried out, his voice cracking into a raw, pathetic sob as severe separation anxiety gripped his soul. He was a total emotional hostage to the silence.
"Don't do this to me. Don't punish me. I'll pay more. I'll give you whatever you want. Millions. Just don't leave me in the dark with this noise!"
Melody waited until he was breathing like a dying man before she finally allowed her velvety contralto to cut through the line, her tone cold, dominant, and laced with supreme authority.
"Your energy is filthy tonight, Kaelen," she murmured, her voice sending a violent shiver down his spine.
"You went out into the world today and acted like a monster. You inflicted pain on the innocent to hide your own cowardice. Did you think I wouldn't feel it through the wire?"
Kaelen froze, his eyes widening in the dark room. The weight of her psychological diagnosis crushed him. He felt like a sinner standing before an omniscient god.
"I... I did," Kaelen wept, his voice breaking completely as he confessed his sins to his victim. "I was cruel today. I hurt someone who didn't deserve it. My assistant... I ruined her jacket just because I felt weak. I’m a monster, Siren. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me."
Melody suppressed the fierce, triumphant satisfaction swelling in her chest. She had him on his knees, begging her for mercy for an act he had committed against her.
"Words are cheap, Kaelen," Melody whispered, her voice dripping with an irresistible, hypnotic coldness. "If you want my voice, you will fix what you broke. You will replace what you ruined, and you will do it publicly, with the entire world watching."
"I will," Kaelen promised frantically, his mind racing as a twisted form of compensation formed in his thoughts. "There is an elite fashion gala next week. Titan Music is hosting it. I’ll drag her there myself. I’ll buy her an entire wardrobe. The most expensive silks, the highest couture—I’ll force the designers to dress her like royalty in front of every camera in Hollywood. Just please, don't stay silent."
Melody let out a soft, low hum across the microphone—a sound that felt like a warm caress against his fractured mind. "Good. Remember your promise, Kaelen. If you fail her, you lose me forever."
"I won't fail," he gasped, his heart rate finally beginning to slow down as her velvet cadence returned to soothe his ringing ears. "I swear it."
"Sleep now, Kaelen," she commanded softly, her voice fading into a gentle whisper. "Our time is up."
Before he could plead for another minute, Melody tapped the screen and disconnected the call, plunging her apartment back into peaceful darkness.
On the other side of the city, Kaelen Thorne stared at his phone in absolute horror as the line went completely dead.
The silence returned, heavy and terrifying. Driven by a manic wave of separation anxiety, he dropped directly to his knees on his dressing room rug, his bloodshot eyes staring wildly at the glass screen as his thumb frantically hit redial on the disconnected call over and over again, begging a ghost for a salvation he didn't realize he had already ruined.
