"He Cheated. I Owned Him." PART 3
Olivia arrived at the Hamptons just after sunset.
The mansion sat behind white gates and perfectly trimmed hedges, the kind of place that looked effortless only because someone had spent a fortune making it that way.
Soft golden lights glowed through tall windows, and music drifted across the lawn like it belonged there more than any of the guests did.
A valet opened her car door.
“Mrs. Brooks,” he said politely.
Olivia nodded, stepping out into the cool coastal air. The name still felt normal to him. To her, it already didn’t.
Inside, the party was already alive.
Crystal glasses clinked. Laughter rose and fell in waves. Someone near the pool was talking too loudly about venture capital. Someone else was taking photos that would later look more important than the moment actually was.
And then she saw them.
Daniel stood near the bar, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a drink he wasn’t really drinking. Vanessa was beside him, laughing at something he had just said, her hand resting lightly on his arm like it belonged there.
Not accidental.
Not casual.
Familiar.
Olivia stopped walking.
For a second, she didn’t move at all, as if the scene had pressed pause on her body before her mind could catch up.
Daniel leaned closer to Vanessa and said something that made her smile wider. Not polite. Not friendly. Real.
Olivia had seen him smile like that before—but not often. And never when she was watching.
She started toward them.
Slowly.
Like her body needed time to confirm what her eyes already knew.
When Vanessa finally noticed her, her expression changed instantly—smooth, practiced.
“Olivia!” Vanessa called out warmly, stepping away from Daniel as if nothing had been happening. “You made it!”
Daniel turned.
For half a second, something flickered across his face. Not guilt. Not surprise. Something closer to calculation.
“Hey,” he said. “You’re late.”
“I was stuck in traffic,” Olivia replied.
Vanessa reached for her immediately, pulling her into a hug. “You look amazing. That dress is perfect on you.”
Olivia’s arms responded automatically, even though her mind didn’t.
When Vanessa let go, she smiled and gestured toward Daniel. “I was just telling him how much I love this place. He said you two come here often.”
Daniel nodded. “A few times.”
That was a lie.
They had never been here together.
Olivia looked at him for a moment too long. “You’re usually busy when I suggest weekends away.”
Daniel shrugged slightly. “Work’s been crazy lately.”
Vanessa laughed softly. “He’s always working. Honestly, I don’t know how you two survive New York stress.”
Olivia didn’t answer.
Instead, she watched the way Vanessa kept positioning herself just slightly closer to Daniel than necessary. The way Daniel didn’t correct it.
The way no one else in the room seemed to notice anything wrong.
Or maybe they did, and just didn’t care.

The rest of the party blurred into a series of conversations Olivia didn’t fully enter. People asked her polite questions. She answered politely. No one looked too closely at her face long enough to see what was happening underneath it.
At one point, she ended up standing alone near the edge of the terrace, watching the ocean in the distance. The wind was stronger here, pulling strands of her hair loose from the careful styling she had done earlier.
Behind her, laughter erupted again.
Daniel’s laugh was in it.
So was Vanessa’s.
Olivia didn’t turn around.
“Not your scene either?”
The voice came from her left.
She looked over.
A man stood a few feet away, maybe early thirties, dark jacket, no obvious effort to fit in with the wealth surrounding him. He held a drink but wasn’t watching the party. He was watching her.
“I’m sorry?” Olivia asked.
“The party,” he said. “You look like you’re observing it instead of being part of it.”
“That’s because I am,” she replied before she could stop herself.
He nodded as if that made perfect sense. “That’s usually the smartest way to attend one of these.”
She studied him. “And you are?”
“Ethan Carter,” he said. “I work in consulting. I was invited by a client who left an hour ago.”
That explained his lack of urgency.
“I’m Olivia,” she said.
“I know,” he replied casually.
That made her pause.
He noticed.
“I mean,” he added, “I heard your name when you arrived. Brooks, right?”
She nodded slowly.
Ethan glanced toward the crowd. “You don’t seem like you enjoy being introduced like an accessory.”
Olivia almost laughed. It came out softer than intended. “That’s one way to put it.”
A pause settled between them.
Behind them, Daniel’s voice carried faintly across the terrace.
“I’ll grab another drink,” he said.
Vanessa replied something Olivia couldn’t hear.
Ethan noticed the direction of her attention. “Husband?”
“Yes,” Olivia said.
“And the woman he’s been talking to for the last hour?”
Olivia didn’t answer immediately.
“That’s my best friend,” she said finally.
Ethan’s expression changed slightly—not shocked, just attentive in a different way. “That complicates things.”
“You noticed something I didn’t?” Olivia asked.
“I noticed they don’t act like people who are just friends with the same person,” he said carefully.
Olivia turned away from the view now, fully facing him. “What does that mean?”
“It means,” Ethan said, “either I’m wrong… or you’re being kept out of something you should probably know about.”
Her heartbeat didn’t rise.
It steadied.
That was worse.
A sudden shout came from the pool area—someone laughing too loudly, a glass breaking, music turning slightly louder as if the party itself wanted to drown out quieter conversations.
When Olivia looked back toward Daniel and Vanessa, they were closer now.
Too close for a conversation that meant nothing.
Vanessa touched Daniel’s wrist briefly, like a habit she didn’t think anyone would question.
Daniel didn’t move away.
Olivia’s fingers tightened slightly around the stem of her glass.
Ethan watched her carefully. “I shouldn’t have said anything if I’m misreading it.”
“You’re not,” Olivia said quietly.
That surprised him.
She didn’t look away from them this time.
For the first time all night, she didn’t feel like she was standing outside the party.
She felt like she was standing outside her own life, watching it continue without her permission.
A few seconds passed.
Then Daniel turned his head.
And for the briefest moment, his eyes met Olivia’s across the terrace.
He didn’t smile.
He didn’t move toward her.
He just looked at her.
Like he was deciding something he hadn’t decided before.
And beside him, Vanessa followed his gaze—slowly, carefully—before her expression shifted into something unreadable as she finally noticed what Daniel was looking at.
