"When the Billionaire’s Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 8

Morning sunlight streamed through the towering stained-glass windows of the Whitman estate.

Golden light flooded the grand foyer, illuminating every polished surface, every expensive piece of furniture, every symbol of wealth.

Yet none of it mattered to Anna Collins.

Liam slept peacefully in her arms.

She sat quietly in a nearby armchair, gently rocking him while whispering soft words under her breath.

For the first time in days, the baby looked truly calm.

His tiny body was relaxed.

His breathing steady.

His little hands rested against her chest.

Anna glanced down at him and felt her heart tighten.

Every soft breath he took filled her with relief.

And something else.

Something deeper.

A fierce protectiveness she could no longer ignore.

It felt as though Liam had chosen her.

As though somehow he recognized in her the safety and comfort nobody else could provide.

But the peaceful silence didn't last.

The sharp sound of high heels echoed across the marble floor.

Anna looked up.

Isabella Whitman had entered the foyer.

She looked flawless as always.

Elegant dress.

Perfect makeup.

Impeccable posture.

But her eyes were cold.

The household staff immediately grew tense.

Several employees stopped what they were doing.

Nobody wanted to be caught in the middle of another confrontation.

"Anna."

Isabella's voice cut through the room like a knife.

"You think you can just sit there with my son and ignore my instructions?"

The words were loud enough for everyone to hear.

Anna slowly lifted her head.

She didn't flinch.

She didn't look away.

"I'm taking care of him, Mrs. Whitman."

Her voice remained calm.

"He needs attention right now. Nothing else matters."

Isabella scoffed.

Her shoulders stiffened.

Then she turned toward the staff members standing nearby.

"So this is acceptable now?"

Her voice dripped with sarcasm.

"You're all going to stand there while a maid behaves like she owns this house?"

Nobody answered.

Nobody dared.

"She actually thinks she can replace me."

The accusation hung heavily in the air.

Anna felt the weight of every eye in the room.

But she refused to retreat.

Liam shifted slightly in her arms.

A tiny sound escaped his lips.

Almost as if he were reminding everyone exactly why she was there.

Anna lowered her head and gently kissed his hair.

"He trusts me."

She spoke softly.

"And I trust him."

Her fingers lightly stroked his back.

"Nothing is going to change that."

The staff exchanged nervous glances.

Many of them had witnessed Isabella's arrogance before.

But never like this.

Never directed so openly and cruelly toward someone protecting a child.

Several employees looked at Anna differently now.

With respect.

With sympathy.

With admiration.

Unnoticed by most of the room, Daniel Whitman stepped into the foyer.

He stopped several feet behind Anna.

Watching.

Listening.

Observing everything.

He saw Isabella's contempt.

Her jealousy.

Her need for control.

But he also saw Anna's courage.

Her calmness.

Her unwavering devotion to Liam.

For the first time, Daniel found himself looking at his wife differently.

Not as the elegant socialite who helped run his empire.

But as someone capable of humiliating others—even while their son's life remained in danger.

"Anna."

His voice was quiet.

Low enough that only she could hear.

She looked up.

Daniel offered a small nod.

"You're doing a good job."

His eyes drifted toward Liam.

"He's safe."

Then he looked back at her.

"And you're right."

Anna blinked.

Surprised.

She didn't know what to say.

A small nod was enough.

Daniel's trust had become the only thing keeping her grounded.

Unfortunately, Isabella noticed the exchange.

Immediately.

Her eyes narrowed.

The anger returned stronger than before.

"Daniel."

Her voice sharpened.

"You're really going to allow this?"

She gestured toward Anna.

Toward the baby.

Toward the growing divide between them.

Daniel didn't look away.

"Yes."

The answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

Without apology.

"Liam trusts her."

He glanced toward the baby.

"And that's what matters."

The tension inside the foyer became almost unbearable.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Anna inhaled slowly.

Holding Liam closer.

She knew this morning was only the beginning.

The conflict was growing.

And she was standing directly in the center of it.

But she wasn't afraid.

Not anymore.

Isabella could barely hide her frustration.

Every employee in the foyer could see it.

Anna remained silent.

Steady.

Determined.

While Daniel watched everything unfold.

And with every passing minute, he found himself questioning more and more about the woman he had married.

Liam suddenly made a soft sound.

Turning his head toward Anna.

Immediately she smiled.

A genuine smile.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

Her voice was warm.

"No one's going to hurt you."

For a brief moment, the baby relaxed even further.

Trusting her completely.

Depending on her completely.

And Daniel noticed.

He noticed everything.

The way Liam responded to her voice.

The way he settled in her arms.

The way she instinctively knew exactly what he needed.

Then Isabella abruptly turned away.

Her jaw clenched.

Her heels clicked sharply against the marble floor as she stormed out of the foyer.

But the tension remained.

Daniel stepped closer.

Placing a firm hand on Anna's shoulder.

"You did the right thing."

His voice was sincere.

"Even with all the hostility directed at you, you stayed calm."

His eyes drifted toward Liam.

"And you protected him."

He paused.

"That matters more than pride."

More than anger.

More than anything.

Emotion tightened Anna's throat.

For the first time, someone besides herself truly understood the seriousness of the situation.

For the first time, someone recognized her courage.

But she also knew Isabella wouldn't let this go.

The fight for Liam's well-being was only beginning.

And she needed to be ready.

Anna looked down at the sleeping baby.

Every tiny movement.

Every soft sigh.

Every peaceful breath.

Strengthened her resolve.

She would never stop protecting him.

Not now.

Not ever.

Daniel continued watching silently.

And something inside him shifted.

Anna wasn't simply a loyal employee.

She wasn't just a nanny.

She wasn't just a maid.

She was Liam's protector.

The one person willing to place the baby's safety above everything else.

Even above herself.

And that realization changed the way he viewed both women.

Because while Anna protected...

Isabella controlled.

While Anna comforted...

Isabella demanded.

And the difference was becoming impossible to ignore.

As Anna gently rocked Liam, silent tears slipped down her cheeks.

Not from weakness.

Not from fear.

But from relief.

And determination.

A promise formed inside her heart.

No matter what happened.

No matter who stood against her.

She would never allow Liam to suffer again.

At that moment, Anna realized she had gained something more valuable than any raise.

More valuable than recognition.

More valuable than wealth.

She had earned Liam's trust.

And Daniel Whitman's respect.

And for the first time since arriving at the estate...

She truly believed she could face whatever came next.

As long as Liam remained safe in her arms.
