"When the Billionaire’s Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 7

The Whitman estate was silent in the early hours of the morning.

The only sound came from Anna Collins' soft footsteps as she moved through the dark hallways.

Liam rested in her arms, breathing quietly against her chest.

But Anna couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

The fever had gone down.

The nursery was secure.

Yet the sense of danger remained.

As she approached the baby's room, a faint noise caught her attention.

It came from the private laundry room connected to the nursery wing.

The sound was barely audible.

A rustle.

A drawer closing.

Someone moving carefully.

Anna froze.

Every protective instinct inside her immediately came alive.

Holding Liam securely against her chest, she moved closer.

Slowly.

Silently.

Then she saw her.

Mary.

The new nanny.

Mary stood beside a folding table covered with Liam's freshly washed clothes.

She was moving cautiously.

Too cautiously.

Like someone trying very hard not to be caught.

Anna's heartbeat accelerated.

Why was Mary here at this hour?

And what was she doing with Liam's clothes?

Keeping herself hidden behind a marble column, Anna watched carefully.

Mary glanced over both shoulders.

Once.

Twice.

Making sure nobody was watching.

Then she pulled a small envelope from her pocket.

Anna's blood ran cold.

Mary carefully opened it.

A fine white powder spilled onto one of Liam's onesies.

Only a small amount.

Just enough to go unnoticed.

But Anna recognized it instantly.

The same strange powder.

The same substance discovered after Liam's terrifying fever the night before.

For a moment, Anna couldn't breathe.

"So it was you..."

The words barely escaped her lips.

Her stomach twisted violently.

Finally.

After days of fear.

After sleepless nights.

After endless suspicion.

She had a real lead.

A real piece of evidence.

She was about to step out and confront Mary when a sharp voice suddenly echoed through the hallway.

"Anna?"

Anna froze.

She recognized that voice immediately.

Isabella.

Mary stiffened for a split second.

Then, almost magically, she recovered.

A polite smile appeared on her face.

As if nothing had happened.

As if she hadn't just contaminated a baby's clothing.

Anna knew she had only seconds to act.

Without drawing attention, she slipped forward and quietly grabbed the contaminated outfit.

She shoved it inside an empty laundry bag.

Then stepped back.

The evidence was hidden.

Safe.

Isabella approached with her arms crossed.

Her expression was cold and suspicious.

"What are you doing here?" she demanded.

Anna kept her voice calm.

"I heard a noise."

"So I came to check."

Isabella narrowed her eyes.

"Are you spying on the staff now?"

The contempt in her voice was unmistakable.

Anna met her gaze without hesitation.

"I'm protecting Liam."

The answer came instantly.

Firm.

Confident.

Direct.

Isabella's eyes narrowed even further.

"You really think you're this baby's savior, don't you?"

Anna inhaled slowly.

The accusation didn't matter.

Nothing mattered except Liam.

"All I want is to keep him safe."

She adjusted the baby in her arms.

"Nothing else matters."

Liam let out a soft whimper.

Immediately Anna lowered her head and gently rocked him.

The baby relaxed against her.

Trusting her.

Depending on her.

And that made everything even more urgent.

Isabella sighed.

Frustration flickered across her face.

Along with something darker.

Jealousy.

"You're manipulating my husband."

Anna looked up immediately.

"I would never do that."

Her voice remained steady.

"My only concern is Liam."

Before Isabella could respond, Liam suddenly began crying again.

The sound echoed through the hallway.

Anna immediately carried him toward the nursery.

Within seconds she began rocking him gently.

The effect was immediate.

The cries softened.

The sobs faded.

His tiny body relaxed.

Soon he was resting peacefully in her arms once more.

As Anna held him, her eyes drifted toward the hidden laundry bag.

The evidence was still there.

Safe.

Hidden from everyone.

From Mary.

From Isabella.

Even from Daniel.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Anna possessed something concrete.

Something real.

Proof.

Proof that someone inside the mansion was trying to hurt Liam.

And now she was closer than ever to discovering who.

As the first hints of dawn approached outside the windows, Anna understood something important.

The truth was close.

Very close.

And no one would stop her from finding it.

Mary was hiding dangerous secrets.

And Anna would do whatever it took to uncover them.

Because this was no longer just about protecting Liam.

It was about exposing the person who wanted the billionaire's son dead.
