"When the Billionaire’s Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 2

Anna yanked the sheet away.

The moment the fabric came off, her blood ran cold.

Dozens of tiny metal pins were scattered across the mattress.

Perfectly arranged.

Almost invisible beneath the bedding.

Each one gleamed beneath the chandelier's golden light—a silent, cruel trap designed for a helpless newborn.

Liam squirmed violently in her arms.

His tiny fists clenched.

His face was soaked with tears.

His desperate cries filled the nursery and seemed to echo through every corner of the Whitman estate.

Anna swallowed hard.

A wave of rage and horror rushed through her body.

How could anyone do something this cruel to a baby?

The thought alone made her chest ache.

Liam let out another heartbreaking scream.

His tiny body trembled against hers.

"No," Anna whispered firmly.

"Not while I'm here."

She held him closer.

His small heartbeat fluttered against her chest.

The fear was still there.

But something stronger had taken its place.

Determination.

She would not let anyone hurt Liam.

Not Mrs. Whitman.

Not anyone in this house.

Suddenly, the nursery door burst open.

Isabella Whitman appeared in the doorway.

Her silk robe flowed behind her as she stormed into the room.

Her eyes immediately locked onto Anna.

"What are you doing?" she demanded.

The anger in her voice was unmistakable.

"Why is he still crying?"

Anna lifted her head.

Her shoulders were tense.

Her heart was racing.

But she refused to back down.

"Mrs. Whitman, he's hurt."

She pointed toward the mattress.

"There's something wrong with the crib."

For a split second, Isabella froze.

Shock flashed across her face.

Then it vanished beneath a mask of fury.

"Hurt?"

Her voice rose sharply.

"Don't be ridiculous."

"You don't pay me enough to ignore this," Anna replied.

"The baby is in danger."

"I pay you to take care of him," Isabella snapped.

"Not invent problems."

"If you can't handle a crying baby, then maybe you should start looking for another job."

Anna took a slow breath.

She forced herself to remain calm.

"I can't ignore what I found."

She tightened her hold on Liam.

"I'm not leaving him alone."

Isabella stepped closer.

Dangerously close.

The tension between them filled the room.

"You think you know better than me?"

Her eyes narrowed.

"Better than this entire family?"

"I'm his mother."

Her voice hardened.

"I decide what's best for my son."

Liam whimpered again.

His tiny hands flailed helplessly.

Anna felt her anger growing.

Every word from Isabella seemed to make the air heavier.

But she refused to move.

Instead, she approached the crib.

Carefully balancing Liam in one arm, she reached down and began removing the pins one by one.

Cold metal pressed against her fingertips.

The sight made her stomach churn.

Whoever had done this had been deliberate.

Careful.

Patient.

Dangerous.

"See, Liam?" she whispered softly.

She kissed the baby's damp forehead.

"Nobody's going to hurt you anymore."

"I'm here."

"And I'll always protect you."

For the first time, Isabella looked down at the mattress.

Really looked.

Her eyes followed each pin Anna removed.

One.

Two.

Three.

Ten.

Twenty.

Dozens.

Something shifted in her expression.

A flicker of uncertainty.

A trace of doubt.

But Isabella Whitman was not a woman who admitted mistakes.

Especially not in front of an employee.

"You're overreacting," she said.

Though her voice sounded less certain now.

"There is no danger."

"This is unnecessary drama."

Anna looked directly into her eyes.

"No, Mrs. Whitman."

Her voice remained steady.

"This is not drama."

"Your son can't protect himself."

"So I will."

Liam was still crying.

But now, as Anna held him close, the cries slowly began to weaken.

The tension in his tiny body eased.

His breathing became more regular.

Anna felt his heartbeat slowing against her chest.

And with every passing second, her conviction grew stronger.

This baby trusted her.

And she would not betray that trust.

Not for anyone.

Not even the people who owned this mansion.

Isabella took a step backward.

The anger was still there.

But something else had appeared.

Concern.

Fear.

Questions she clearly didn't want to ask.

"You're getting far too involved," Isabella muttered.

The words sounded almost like she was trying to convince herself.

Anna never looked away from Liam.

"He trusts me."

She gently stroked his tiny cheek.

"And I trust him."

Her gaze remained fixed on the baby.

"He's safe now."

"I promise."

Silence filled the nursery.

For several long seconds, neither woman spoke.

The only sound was Liam's softening cries.

Eventually, even those began to fade.

The screams became whimpers.

The whimpers became small hiccups.

And finally—

the baby relaxed.

For the first time in days.

Anna felt relief wash through her.

But it didn't last long.

Because she knew the real problem hadn't disappeared.

Someone had put those pins inside the crib.

Someone had intentionally hurt Liam.

And that person was still somewhere inside the mansion.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hiding.

Isabella moved toward the door.

Her lips pressed into a tight line.

Too proud to admit fear.

Too proud to admit she might have been wrong.

Yet Anna noticed it.

That tiny shadow of doubt in her eyes.

A crack in the perfect image she tried so hard to maintain.

"It won't happen again," Anna said firmly.

She glanced down at the pile of metal pins scattered across the polished floor.

Their sharp edges reflected the chandelier's golden light.

The scene felt almost unreal.

A defenseless newborn.

A maid willing to risk everything.

And a billionaire's wife who still refused to see the truth standing right in front of her.

Liam slept quietly against Anna's shoulder.

His tiny fingers curled around her uniform.

Holding on.

Trusting her.

Depending on her.

"You'll regret this."

Isabella's voice was barely above a whisper.

Whether she was speaking to Anna—or to herself—was impossible to tell.

Then she turned and walked away.

The nursery door slowly closed behind her.

The mansion fell silent once more.

And in that silence, Anna realized something terrifying.

Finding the pins had only been the beginning.

The real danger had yet to reveal itself.
