"The Luna: Marked by Two Alphas" Chapter 6
The split-second before Jarek could pull the iron trigger of the heavy crossbow, a deafening, sonic crack ripped through the mountain air.
A heavy, dual-bladed throwing axe—hurled from the base of the ridge with the impossible, desperate Alpha strength of Dorian Ashcroft—smashed directly into the watchtower's primary supporting beam right beside Jarek's head.
The sheer, explosive force of the impact shattered the ancient wood into a spray of lethal splinters, violently throwing the rogue captain's aim offline.
The crossbow fired. The steel bolt did not pierce Ariel's chest, but it grazed her shoulder with terrifying velocity, ripping through her scouting tunic and tearing a jagged line across her skin.
Ariel gasped, the sudden, white-hot bite of the metal forcing her back a step. But she had no time to steady herself. The structural integrity of the ancient western watchtower was already failing. Under the combined, roaring assault of the Northern and Southern vanguards hitting the valley below, the wooden platform groaned, snapped, and completely collapsed inward.
Jarek screamed as he plunged into the black abyss below, but Ariel was falling backward too, tumbling into the empty, freezing air as the platform disintegrated beneath her feet.
She never hit the rocks.
Rhys Evernight, having anticipated the structural collapse from the moment her winch line snapped, had already scaled the vertical ridges in his massive black wolf form. Moving with a predatory, terrifying speed, the massive black beast launched himself across the chasm mid-air. He caught Ariel by the thick fabric of her tunic with his jaws, twisting his powerful body in mid-flight to cushion her fall completely with his own heavy frame as they crashed into the snowy embankment below, sliding down into the safety of the canyon.
The moment they ground to a halt, Rhys shifted back into his human form in a blur of motion, his face as pale as the snow around them. He pulled Ariel into his arms, his hands shaking as he checked her neck for a pulse. "Ariel. Ariel, look at me!"
Dorian arrived a second later, sprinting through the deep drifts, his broadsword covered in rogue blood, his amber-gold eyes wide with an unadulterated panic that mirrored Rhys's. "Is she hit? Did the bolt touch her?"
The adrenaline of the infiltration was fading fast, and in its place, a horrific reality took hold. Ariel's moonlight-blue eyes rolled back, her pupils dilating as a violent, unnatural tremor seized her entire body. The small graze on her shoulder was already turning a sickly, iridescent green under the moonlight.
The silver-leaf poison was running through her veins. Because she was the Daughter of Two Moons, her unique, sacred physiology didn't just fight the toxin—it reacted violently against the silver magic laced within it, sending her system into a catastrophic, hyper-feverish shock. She began to convulse, her breathing turning into a ragged, suffocating wheeze as her skin went from freezing cold to burning hot.

"In here! Move!" Rhys roared, his usual cold, strategic armor completely stripping away, leaving only a desperate, feral man trying to save the woman he loved. He lifted Ariel into his arms and carried her into a nearby shallow cavern, shielding her from the screaming blizzard outside.
Dorian followed instantly, dropping to his knees beside them. The sight of the independent, brilliant woman who had just single-handedly saved both their armies now lying helpless, shivering, and dying in the dirt broke something fundamental inside both Alphas.
"Tell me what to do, Evernight," Dorian commanded, his voice cracking, entirely stripping himself of his pride as he looked at Rhys. "Your packs know the northern poisons. Tell me how to fix her."
"The silver-leaf is burning through her lunar magic," Rhys said, his voice deadly tight as he tore open Ariel's tunic sleeve to expose the wound, his steady fingers trembling as he applied pressure. "Her wolf is trying to fight it, but the fever will cook her heart before her body can purge it. We need to stabilize her core temperature, and I need to bind an antidote."
"I'm the hearth," Dorian said instantly. Without a single note of defiance, the Southern King unbuckled his cold gold armor, discarding the heavy metal into the dirt, and pulled Ariel's thrashing body directly against his broad, bare chest.
The raw, intense southern heat radiating from his skin acted as a literal furnace, wrapping around her shivering frame to force her core temperature into stability. He wrapped his massive arms around her, his amber eyes bloodshot as he buried his face in her silver-blonde hair. "I've got you, Ariel. Look at me, sweetheart. Stay with me."
Ariel's eyes flared open, but they were unseeing, clouded over with a thick glaze of delirium. Her lips moved, dry and cracking, as she muttered a broken hallucination born from her deepest, fatal flaw. "Am I... am I enough now? Garrow... I finished the ledgers... I saved them... Did I earn my stay? Can I rest now?"
The words were a physical blow to both men. It broke their hearts to hear that even while dying, her fractured mind believed her life was only worth what she could sacrifice for others.
"You don't have to earn anything, Ariel," Rhys murmured fiercely, his low voice pleading with her as he pulled a silver flask of winter-leaf extract from his belt. He drew his dagger and sliced open his own palm, letting his raw, dominant Northern Alpha blood drip into the mixture to bind the magic and counteract the silver toxin.
For the first time, their pheromones didn't clash.
Rhys's cold, soothing cedar scent blended seamlessly with Dorian's burning, protective amber energy, creating a dual-Alpha safety net that wrapped around Ariel's thrashing wolf, instantly calming the violent convulsions. They were working in absolute, perfect synchronization.
Rhys lifted her head, pressing the bloody flask to her pale lips. "Drink it, Ariel. Please."
Across her shaking body, Dorian's amber eyes locked onto Rhys's silver-grey ones, their shared, terrifying bond fully cemented in the quiet of the cave.
"Her heart is slowing down, Rhys," Dorian whispered, his voice cracking as he held her freezing hand tightly against his chest. "If she doesn't swallow it in the next ten seconds...."
