"The Enemy in My Arms" Chapter 47: Burn This Empire
Chapter 47
Burn This Empire
The Moretti empire collapsed before sunrise.
Not gracefully.
Not quietly.
Empires built on fear rarely survived with dignity.
By 3:12 a.m., federal agents stormed twelve properties across New York and New Jersey simultaneously. Offshore accounts froze mid-transfer. Captains vanished with cash reserves and armed escorts. Russian syndicates seized shipping routes before bodies inside the docks had even cooled.
And somewhere beneath Manhattan—
Luca Moretti ran out of places to hide.
Rain poured relentlessly over the city while helicopters circled above the burning estate like vultures over a battlefield. News stations interrupted regular programming every twenty minutes with fresh scandals, fresh arrests, fresh leaked recordings exposing politicians and judges tied directly to Moretti operations.
Valentina watched it happen from the backseat of an armored SUV while Adrian sat beside her bleeding quietly through another bandage.
The television mounted inside the vehicle flashed rapidly through headlines.
FBI CONFIRMS ORGANIZED CRIME CONNECTIONS TO MULTIPLE PUBLIC OFFICIALS
MORETTI SHIPPING UNDER FEDERAL SEIZURE
MISSING WITNESSES LINKED TO CRIMINAL COVER-UP
The empire finally burned publicly.
Good.
Adrian leaned back against the seat with eyes closed briefly while rain streaked silver across the armored windows beside him.
Too pale again.
Valentina noticed immediately.
“You’re still bleeding.”
“I’m alive.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Sergei sat across from them inside the SUV calmly cleaning blood from his rings with a handkerchief.
“The Americans love paperwork after violence,” he muttered while watching television coverage. “Very charming.”
Nobody answered.
The night had become too heavy for sarcasm.
Valentina looked back toward Adrian again.
Smoke still clung faintly to his clothes from the estate fire. Fresh bruises darkened one side of his throat where collapsing debris nearly buried him inside the mansion.
Too close.
Everything tonight came too close.
“You should be in a hospital,” she murmured quietly.
Adrian opened one eye slightly. “And explain the fake funeral?”
Fair.
The SUV turned sharply through Lower Manhattan while police sirens screamed somewhere across rain-soaked streets.
Outside, Moretti Financial Tower rose black against storm clouds ahead.
Dark.
Half-abandoned.
The empire’s final nerve center.
Roman’s voice crackled through the radio mounted near the dashboard.
“FBI tactical units secured the lower floors.”
Sergei sighed heavily. “Wonderful. Bureau people everywhere.”
“Try not to shoot federal agents tonight,” Roman replied dryly.
“No promises.”
Valentina leaned forward slightly. “Any sign of Luca?”
Silence answered first.
Then:
“He killed three men escaping the tower already.”
Of course he did.
Luca never fled alone.
He consumed people on the way down.
The SUV stopped hard near a flooded intersection two blocks from the tower entrance.
Adrian grabbed his rifle immediately despite visible pain cutting sharply across his expression.
Valentina touched his wrist before he exited the vehicle.
“Hey.”
He looked toward her.
The storm outside reflected faintly in exhausted blue-gray eyes.
“You don’t have to carry this alone anymore.”
Something moved briefly across his face then.
Not relief.
More dangerous.
Need.
Then Sergei opened the vehicle door and freezing rain slammed into the cabin.
“Emotional moment later,” the Russian muttered. “Murder empire now.”
The streets surrounding Moretti Financial Tower looked apocalyptic beneath flashing police lights and stormwater.
Federal agents flooded barricades.
Russian syndicate lookouts watched rooftops.
Ambulances waited near the perimeter like everybody already expected casualties.
Because they did.
Adrian moved beside Valentina through the rain with one hand lightly against her lower back.
Protective instinct.
Automatic now.
Roman met them inside the evacuated lobby beneath shattered chandeliers and emergency floodlights.
He looked exhausted.
Older somehow.
“Hell of a mess,” Adrian observed quietly.
Roman laughed once without humor. “You think?”
The FBI agent handed Valentina a tablet displaying live surveillance feeds from inside the tower.
Bodies.
Broken offices.
Elevator shafts disabled manually.
Then finally—
Luca.
Thirty-seventh floor.
Alone.
Waiting.
Valentina stared at the screen while rain hammered against skyscraper windows above them.
“He knew we’d come.”
Roman’s expression darkened slightly. “He locked the upper floors from the inside. Security systems rerouted manually.” A pause. “He wants a final confrontation.”
Of course he did.
Luca never believed endings mattered unless somebody watched.
Sergei checked ammunition calmly beside the ruined lobby fountain.
“Dramatic men always become exhausting eventually.”
Adrian’s eyes never left the surveillance screen.
“I go up first.”
“No,” Valentina answered immediately.
Both men looked toward her.
She stepped closer to the screen displaying Luca standing alone inside the executive boardroom.
Rain behind him.
City lights below.
King waiting inside his collapsing castle.
“He wants you angry,” she said quietly toward Adrian. “That’s why he’s still alive.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly.
True.
Luca understood him too well.
Roman crossed his arms heavily. “Then what’s the plan?”
Silence settled briefly through the flooded lobby.
The entire empire balancing on whatever happened next.
Then Valentina answered calmly:
“We burn the rest.”
Everybody looked at her.
She turned the tablet around slowly.
Additional files loaded onto the screen.
Encrypted financial backups.
Secret politician recordings.
Hidden client lists Luca never even realized she copied months earlier.
Roman stared in disbelief. “Jesus Christ.”
Valentina’s voice remained steady.
“If Luca dies tonight, someone else rebuilds eventually.” Her eyes sharpened beneath flashing emergency lights. “So we destroy the foundations too.”
Adrian watched her carefully.
Not fear.
Not exactly.
But close enough to matter.
Because this wasn’t survival anymore.
This was eradication.
Roman grabbed the tablet immediately. “These files could collapse half the East Coast financially.”
“Good.”
Sergei barked sudden laughter beside the elevators.
“I told you already,” he said proudly toward Adrian. “Terrifying woman.”
The elevators remained dead.
Meaning the only way upward now was the emergency stairwell leading thirty-seven floors into Luca’s final stand.
Adrian checked his rifle one last time.
Valentina touched his arm before he moved toward the stairwell door.
He looked down at her quietly.
“What.”
Her eyes held his steadily.
“Don’t let him turn you back into a ghost tonight.”
The words hit harder than bullets ever could.
Because Adrian understood exactly what she meant.
Luca wanted rage.
Violence.
Execution.
The old wolf.
Not the man standing here now trying desperately to remain human beside her.
Adrian leaned down slowly until his forehead rested briefly against hers despite rainwater and blood and chaos surrounding them.
“I’ll come back,” he murmured quietly.
Valentina swallowed hard.
“You better.”
Then the stairwell door opened.
And somewhere thirty-seven floors above them—
Luca Moretti waited while his empire burned to the ground around him.
