"The Enemy in My Arms" Chapter 40: Make Them Afraid
Chapter 40
Make Them Afraid
The scandal broke at 8:17 a.m. on a Monday.
By noon, three senators denied knowing Luca Moretti publicly.
By sunset, two captains vanished with offshore cash reserves.
And somewhere inside Manhattan, Luca smashed a whiskey glass hard enough to cut open his own hand.
Valentina considered that a productive day.
Rain poured steadily across Philadelphia while every television inside Sergei’s underground club flashed the same breaking headlines.
MORETTI SHIPPING TIED TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATION
LEAKED FINANCIAL RECORDS EXPOSE EAST COAST CRIMINAL NETWORKS
FEDERAL SOURCES CONFIRM ACTIVE ORGANIZED CRIME COVER-UP
The room smelled like expensive liquor, cigarettes, and panic.
Perfect.
Valentina stood near the long mahogany bar wearing black slacks and a silk blouse borrowed from one of Sergei’s associates. Her hair fell loose over one shoulder while multiple burner phones vibrated across the table beside her almost nonstop.
Captains.
Lawyers.
Politicians.
Cowards.
Everybody suddenly wanted distance from Luca Moretti.
Adrian watched her quietly from the far corner booth while fresh bandages remained hidden beneath his black shirt.
Still healing.
Still dangerous.
Still staring at her like she’d become something he no longer fully understood.
That should have frightened her.
Instead it felt strangely intoxicating.
“You leaked the ledgers to journalists,” Adrian said finally.
Valentina didn’t look up from the laptop screen. “Parts of them.”
“Strategically.”
“Yes.”
Adrian leaned back slowly against the booth cushions.
“Remind me never to emotionally damage you again.”
Too late.
She almost smiled.
Almost.
Sergei crossed the club floor carrying vodka and newspapers beneath one arm while armed Russian guards monitored entrances around the perimeter.
“You caused chaos,” he announced proudly.
Valentina accepted the newspaper from him calmly.
Luca’s face stared back from the front page beneath bold black headlines.
The king bleeding publicly.
Good.
Sergei pointed toward the television screens overhead.
“FBI denied involvement twice already. That means they’re terrified.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly. “Roman’s losing control.”
“No,” Valentina corrected quietly while reading another incoming message. “Roman already lost control. He just hasn’t admitted it yet.”
Another phone buzzed immediately afterward.
Unknown number.
Valentina answered calmly.
“Yes?”
Heavy breathing met her first.
Then finally:
“You stupid fucking bitch.”
Luca.
Adrian stood instantly from the booth the second he recognized the voice.
Valentina raised one hand slightly toward him without looking away from the phone.
Stay back.
For once, he obeyed.
“You sound stressed,” she said softly.
Something shattered violently on Luca’s side of the call.
Excellent.
“You think leaking documents hurts me?” he hissed. “You think newspapers destroy men like me?”
“No,” Valentina replied calmly. “Fear does.”
Silence.
Real silence.
The dangerous kind.
Then Luca laughed softly.
Cold sound.
“You finally learned.”
Her chest tightened unexpectedly.
Not because of fear.
Because he was right.
Valentina stared at Luca’s photograph on the newspaper while rain hammered against club windows overhead.
“I learned from you,” she said quietly.
Adrian watched her carefully now.
Because suddenly she sounded terrifyingly calm.
Luca exhaled slowly through the phone.
“You know what disappoints me most?”
“Your standards always felt unrealistic.”
“You could’ve ruled beside me.”
The room went still around her.
Sergei stopped moving.
Even the guards nearby shifted uncomfortably.
Because everybody understood what Luca meant.
Not wife.
Partner.
Equal.
Monster beside monster.
Valentina looked toward Adrian instinctively.
He stood motionless near the booth watching her with an expression impossible to survive.
Not fear.
Worse.
Worry.
Because maybe Adrian suddenly saw it too—
how easily pain could evolve into power if someone stopped resisting it.
“You mistake survival for loyalty,” Valentina said finally.
“And you mistake mercy for strength.”
Her grip tightened slightly around the phone.
Interesting.
Because six months ago, those words would’ve hurt.
Now they just sounded old.
Luca’s voice lowered dangerously afterward.
“I’m going to enjoy burying him.”
Adrian’s expression hardened instantly across the room.
Valentina felt something inside her turn cold.
Not panicked.
Focused.
“You won’t touch him.”
Luca laughed softly again.
“You already sound like me.”
The line disconnected immediately afterward.
The silence inside the club lingered heavily.
Adrian crossed the room toward her slowly.
Not angry.
Careful.
Like approaching someone standing too close to a cliff edge.
Valentina placed the phone down gently onto the table beside the other burners.
“He’s losing people fast,” she murmured.
Adrian studied her face carefully. “Valentina.”
“He threatened you.”
“He’s threatened me before.”
“No.” Her eyes lifted sharply toward his. “This time he meant it personally.”
Another television alert interrupted the room suddenly.
BREAKING NEWS — FEDERAL WARRANT ISSUED FOR LUCA MORETTI
Sergei barked out loud laughter near the bar.
“Now the Americans pretend they care,” he muttered.
Phones erupted again across the table.
More captains.
More panic.
More men realizing Luca Moretti could finally fall.
Valentina answered the next call immediately.
“Yes?”
A nervous male voice spoke rapidly through static.
“Mrs. Moretti, please listen carefully. Several captains are requesting protection.”
“From Luca?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes darkened slightly.
“And what exactly are they offering in exchange?”
“Ports. Routes. Loyalty.”
There it was.
Power transfer.
The moment empires changed hands.
Adrian watched realization settle across her face instantly.
Dangerous realization.
Valentina ended the call slowly and looked toward the rain-covered city beyond the club windows.
Men were choosing her now.
Not because they respected her.
Because they feared her more intelligently than Luca.
Sergei noticed too.
The old Russian smiled faintly into his vodka glass.
“She walks like a queen already.”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because he wasn’t sure whether to feel proud or terrified anymore.
Valentina turned back toward the room slowly.
Toward televisions screaming Luca’s collapse.
Toward captains begging for protection.
Toward the criminal empire beginning to kneel beneath scandal and fear.
And for the first time since marrying Luca Moretti—
she finally understood something dangerous.
Power wasn’t inherited.
Power belonged to whoever controlled fear best.
Her eyes met Adrian’s across the room.
“You asked me once what I wanted.”
Adrian’s pulse tightened slightly.
“Yes.”
Valentina’s voice came quiet.
Cold.
Beautifully certain.
“I want them afraid to say my name the way they were afraid of his.”
