"The Enemy in My Arms" Chapter 30: You Lied Beautifully
The silence after Adrian’s words felt catastrophic.
Luca knows who I am.
Valentina stared at him from across the apartment while cold dawn light spilled through the windows behind her. Brighton Beach had fully awakened outside now—traffic, distant sirens, ocean wind—but inside the safe house everything suddenly felt suspended in place.
Broken.
Dangerously broken.
Adrian still held the phone loosely at his side.
Operational calm had returned to his expression.
That frightened her more than panic would have.
Because now she understood the difference between Adrian the man and Adrian the operative.
One kissed her like he was starving.
The other prepared for war while bleeding quietly.
And she no longer knew which one stood in front of her.
“What exactly does that mean?” she asked finally.
Adrian set the phone down slowly onto the kitchen counter.
“It means the operation is compromised.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“It means Luca knows I’m not his bodyguard anymore.”
“Anymore?”
The word sharpened instantly between them.
Adrian realized the mistake too late.
Valentina laughed softly beneath her breath.
No humor.
Just damage.
“God,” she whispered. “You really did belong to him once.”
The room remained painfully still.
Adrian looked exhausted suddenly.
Not physically.
Morally.
“Yes,” he admitted quietly.
The truth landed like another betrayal.
Valentina turned away sharply before emotion became visible again. She walked toward the living room windows and wrapped both arms tightly around herself while Brighton Beach blurred beneath cold gray rain outside.
“How long were you inside the organization?”
“Three years.”
Three years.
Three years lying beside Luca’s empire while secretly tearing it apart from the inside.
Three years watching women disappear.
Three years watching her.
Valentina closed her eyes briefly.
“You watched him destroy people.”
“Yes.”
“And you stayed.”
“I needed evidence.”
“You needed leverage,” she corrected coldly.
Adrian didn’t argue.
Which somehow hurt more.
The silence stretched too long again.
Finally Valentina turned back toward him slowly.
“You should leave.”
The words hit harder than gunfire.
Adrian’s expression changed instantly. “No.”
“You said Luca knows who you are.”
“He does.”
“Then staying here gets us both killed.”
“I’m aware.”
“Clearly not aware enough.”
Her anger flared sharply again, rising fast enough to burn through grief.
“You lied to me from the beginning.”
“I know.”
“You manipulated me.”
“I know.”
“You let me fall in love with you.”
That one finally hurt him visibly.
Good.
Valentina saw it land directly beneath the ribs.
Adrian looked away immediately.
Coward.
She crossed the apartment toward the kitchen before she could stop herself, fury and heartbreak twisting violently together beneath her skin.
“You don’t even defend yourself,” she snapped.
“There’s nothing to defend.”
The honesty nearly shattered her patience completely.
Valentina yanked open the drawer beside the kitchen sink and grabbed the handgun hidden beneath folded towels.
Adrian froze instantly.
Not frightened.
Focused.
His eyes tracked the weapon automatically while every muscle in his body tightened beneath stillness.

Operational reflex.
The realization hurt all over again.
Valentina raised the gun toward him with shaking hands.
The apartment became deathly silent.
Rain tapped softly against the windows while distant traffic drifted through Brighton Beach below.
Adrian didn’t reach for his own weapon.
Didn’t move.
Didn’t even look surprised.
That made her angrier.
“You should probably say something convincing right now,” she whispered.
Adrian stared directly at her across the kitchen.
Gray-blue eyes steady.
Tired.
Devastatingly calm.
“If pointing that at me makes this easier,” he said quietly, “then keep holding it.”
Her throat tightened painfully.
“No defense?” she asked shakily. “No excuse? Nothing?”
“I lied to you.”
“Yes.”
“I used proximity to access Luca.”
“Yes.”
“I should’ve told you the truth sooner.”
Her hands trembled harder around the gun now.
“Then why didn’t you?”
Adrian’s silence lasted exactly long enough to become answer again.
Because he was afraid.
Not operationally.
Personally.
Valentina hated that she could still read him so clearly.
“Say something real for once,” she whispered.
Adrian finally looked directly into her eyes again.
And quietly answered:
“You were never supposed to matter to me.”
The words nearly destroyed her.
Not because they sounded cruel.
Because they sounded true.
He stepped closer then.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The barrel remained aimed directly at his chest.
Still he kept moving.
“Adrian—”
“If you really wanted me dead,” he said softly, “you would’ve pulled the trigger already.”
That infuriated her immediately.
“You arrogant bastard.”
“Probably.”
Another step closer.
Valentina’s pulse hammered violently now while the gun shook harder in her hands.
“Stop moving.”
Adrian obeyed instantly.
Finally.
Only a few feet separated them now.
Close enough to see exhaustion carved deep beneath his eyes.
Close enough to see the moment he stopped acting like an operative and started looking like a man again.
“You know what the worst part is?” Valentina asked quietly.
Adrian remained silent.
“I still don’t think you would hurt me.”
The confession hung heavily between them.
Because after everything—
after the lies, the operation, the manipulation—
that terrifying instinct remained.
Trust.
Adrian looked wrecked hearing it.
“You shouldn’t trust me,” he said softly.
“And yet here we are.”
Rain slid down the windows behind him while weak morning light painted silver across the apartment.
Valentina lowered the gun slightly without meaning to.
Adrian noticed immediately.
Always.
“You lied beautifully,” she whispered.
The pain behind those words cut deeper than anger ever could.
Adrian stepped closer again.
Close enough now that she could smell smoke and rain lingering against his clothes.
Close enough that the gun between them suddenly felt symbolic instead of protective.
“I know,” he said quietly.
Valentina searched his face carefully.
“No,” she corrected softly. “I don’t think you do.”
Because if Adrian truly understood what he’d done—
he would realize the betrayal wasn’t just operational.
It was emotional.
He taught her how to trust someone again while secretly building a case around her life.
That kind of damage stayed.
The gun lowered another inch.
Not forgiveness.
Just exhaustion.
Adrian’s eyes dropped briefly toward the weapon before lifting back toward her face.
“You should hate me.”
Valentina laughed bitterly through tears threatening again.
“That would honestly make this much easier.”
For one terrible moment neither moved.
Then suddenly Adrian reached toward her.
Slowly enough that she could stop him.
Gently enough that it hurt.
His hand closed carefully around the gun still trembling between her fingers.
Not taking it.
Just steadying it.
Warm skin against hers.
The contact nearly shattered her composure completely.
Adrian lowered the weapon gradually until it pointed harmlessly toward the floor.
Then he looked at her like a man already mourning something not fully lost yet.
“I never lied about wanting you alive,” he said quietly.
The worst part?
She believed that too.
