"Obsessive Virtual Boyfriend Is a Billionaire" Chapter 43
The morning after started exactly like a morning.
Which was, Elowen thought, the most significant thing about it.
She woke in his bed, in his apartment, with his arm wrapped around her waist. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, Ravenfall City was doing its slow morning reconfiguration. Pale light, the quiet shift from night to day, and the first suggestions of traffic below. His room was the same as the rest of his apartment: controlled, minimal, yet somehow warmer now than she had expected.
She lay still for a moment, her skin absorbing his warmth.
He was awake. She could tell by his breathing. It was too steady, too deliberate to be sleep.
"You've been awake for a while," she said, her voice gravelly from sleep.
"Yes," he said.
"Were you watching me sleep?"
A pause.
"Yes," he said.
She had told him, months ago, not to watch her sleep. He had said alright. They had both understood the qualifier back then.
She turned slightly, the silk sheets rustling.
He was looking at her, his head resting against the pillow. Not with anything that resembled guilt. His dark eyes were entirely clear.
"How long?" she asked.
"Forty minutes."
"Lucien."
"You have a different expression when you sleep," he said, his thumb brushing a stray black strand away from her forehead. "The slight tension you carry when you're aware of being observed disappears."
She looked at him.
"That's because I'm unconscious," she said.
"I know. I prefer the version of you that isn't working at anything." He held her gaze, his hand coming to rest on her cheek. "I wasn't cataloguing. I was just—"
"Looking," she said.
"Yes."
She turned fully toward him, her knees pulling up against his legs.
They were very close. The morning light was doing the north-window thing, diffused and pale, falling across the narrow space between them.
"Tell me what you want," she said.
He looked at her. Not the filtered version. Not the composed face with its managed revelations.
"You," he said. "Specifically and completely. This. Every morning." He paused, his fingers sliding into her hair. "A life that contains you as a constant."
She felt the words settle, heavy and real, in her chest.
"That's significant," she said.
"Yes," he agreed, not minimizing it.
"Lucien," she said, her expression turning serious. "I need to know something."
"Yes."
"The surveillance. The game. The watching from across the street. When you look back on it — do you understand why parts of it were wrong?"
He was quiet. The silence stretched between them, long and empty, until he finally spoke.
"Yes," he said. "I understand that the control I exercised over your environment without your knowledge was—" He stopped, his jaw tightening before he forced the next words out. "It wasn't love. It was the shape love made in a person who didn't know how to ask for what he needed without engineering the conditions for it."

She held his gaze, feeling the sharp honesty of his admission.
"And now?" she asked.
"Now I'm asking," he said, his fingers tightening slightly against her neck. "For all of it. For you to stay. For this. For the right to be the person who knows where you keep your good pasta and what makes the apartment feel different."
She sat up slightly, propping herself up on her elbow.
"That's what you want?"
"That specific thing," he said. "Yes."
She looked down at him in the morning light.
The obsessive boy from the watercolor classroom. The man who had watched her window for years. The person who had built an entire architecture of proximity around the possibility of being near her.
And also: the person who sat on her floor when she panicked. Who turned the umbrella toward her in the rain. Who told her the truth even when the truth was frightening.
Both things. Always both things.
"You have to tell me," she said, her voice firm. "When you're watching. When you're afraid I'll leave. When the obsession overruns the love — because they're not the same thing and you know they're not the same thing."
"Yes," he said.
"And I'll stay," she said, looking straight into his eyes. "Through the complicated parts. I'm not fragile, Lucien."
"I know you're not."
"But you have to let me be present for the actual version of you. Not the managed one."
He looked at her, his eyes dark and wide, swallowing the light.
"Yes," he said.
She lay back down, her head resting on his chest.
He held her, his arms wrapping tightly around her back, pulling her flush against his chest.
The city outside went from dawn to morning. The sun broke through the grey cloud layer, casting long, sharp shadows across the floorboards.
"This is what it is," she said, eventually. "You and me. This."
"Yes," he said.
"That's significant."
"Yes."
She turned her face into his shoulder, breathing in the scent of cedarwood and clean skin.
"Okay," she said.
"Okay," he said.
And it was.
The morning continued, ordinary and permanent, which was the only kind of permanence that had ever mattered.
