"One Night With The Hidden Alpha" Chapter 17
Killian opened the SUV door for her automatically. Claire climbed into the leather interior without a single second of hesitation.
Killian's expression darkened with a profound, heavy emotion before he shut the door carefully behind her, locking her inside the vault.
Adrian Keller stood motionless by the high windows of the faculty library, staring out.
His silver-gray eyes were fixed entirely on the distant figures crossing beneath the streetlamps. And slowly, the ancient vampire understood something truly terrifying.
The closer Claire stayed to Killian, the calmer the Alpha's volatile psychology became. There was less violent, defensive tension in his posture. There was less raw, predatory sharpness bleeding into his aura. It was as if her literal physical proximity physically stabilized the monster clawing beneath his skin.
Adrian stared through the rain-streaked glass for a long, thoughtful moment. Then, softly to himself, he whispered: "God."
His elegant features darkened with concern. "You really are bonding with her. It's a true tether."
----
The city blurred into a stormy gray outside the windows as Killian walked her the remaining blocks toward her apartment building later that evening.
He wasn't touching her, but he walked close enough that she could feel the intense heat radiating from his large frame through the damp air.
At some point while crossing a slick intersection, his gloved hand settled briefly against the small of her back, guiding her smoothly around a delivery cyclist who had cut recklessly through the pedestrian traffic.
Claire barely reacted to the touch.
Killian walked Claire all the way to her heavy front door.
They reached the secure entrance of her apartment building just after midnight. Claire stepped toward the electronic access panel—then stopped.
Killian had stopped.
Claire's pulse immediately climbed, a sudden spike of adrenaline hitting her chest. "Killian?"
No answer. His amber eyes remained fixed with a violent, predatory focus somewhere deep across the dark street, staring into the pitch-black gap between two commercial buildings. The sheer aggression bleeding off him was suffocating.
Then, slowly, deliberately, Killian stepped directly in front of her, his massive shoulders completely blocking her from the street. Protective positioning.
Claire's stomach dropped into a cold abyss. The entire atmosphere of the block changed in an instant, turning freezing, wrong, and deeply hungry. And for the very first time since she had met him—Killian Virel looked genuinely afraid for her safety.
"Get inside the building," he said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly vibration she had never heard before. It was lethal.
"Killian, what is out there—?"
"Now, Claire."
There was no anger in the command. Which somehow made it a hundred times worse.
Claire's heartbeat slammed violently against her ribs. She turned slowly toward the steel entrance door, her hand shaking as she reached for her keys—and then, a sudden shift in the wind hit her face.
She smelled it. A strange, heavy scent coiling through the damp night air.

It was sweet. Metallic. Like raw blood soaked into a bed of fresh flowers.
Claire stopped breathing entirely, her fingers freezing on the lock.
Across the street, buried deep inside the pitch-black darkness between the brick buildings—two glowing, non-human eyes opened slowly.
---
The warm, yellow light of the apartment on the sixth floor bloomed into the dark three minutes later.
Killian watched the glowing window through the sheets of falling rain, his large frame completely motionless. Only after Claire's slender silhouette paused briefly and disappeared behind the heavy, drawn curtains did something tightly wound inside his chest finally loosen.
The glowing, non-human eyes did not blink.
He lifted his head and smiled directly at Killian.
"So the rumors were true," the stranger murmured softly. His voice carried with a strange, amplified resonance through the falling rain. It was smooth, cold, and entirely devoid of human warmth. "The Alpha finally had a vulnerability."
Killian's expression did not change by a single millimeter. But beneath the dark fabric of his coat, the sheer density of his aura shifted, turning thick, suffocating, and instantly lethal.
"Who sent you," Killian said quietly.
It wasn't an interrogation. It was a countdown.
The stranger's hollow gaze slid slowly past Killian's shoulder, "does she even know what you are, Virel?"
A heavy, suffocating silence reigned. Killian did not answer.
"You really do care about this one. She's already branded?"
Killian moved. To human eyes, his trajectory would have been a blur of dark wind.
Next, his large, leather-gloved hand slammed violently around the enemy's throat.
CRACK.
The impact was devastating. Brick and concrete splintered sharply beneath the force, raining dust down onto the man's hood as he gasped violently for oxygen.
Killian pinned him against the wall effortlessly. Beneath his dark lashes, a brilliant, luminescent gold flashed briefly behind his pupils. He hadn't fully shifted into his beast—his features remained human-shaped, mostly—but those eyes no longer belonged to a man. They belonged to an apex predator.
The man twisted with an unnatural, bone-snapping velocity, his blackened claws flashing through the dark toward Killian's ribs.
Killian caught the attacking wrist instantly with his free hand. Half effort. Maybe less.
Killian's analytical mind already knew exactly what kind of anatomy he was dealing with: *Young hybrid. Fast, erratic metabolism. Enhanced reflexes, but weak cervical spine stability. Easy to break.
Despite the sheer lethality of the struggle, the alleyway stayed unnaturally, eerily quiet. There was no screeching metal, no shattered cars, no public spectacle. Killian controlled every single micro-movement with surgical precision.
Because Claire was upstairs. She was resting only one building away, and some deeply buried, fiercely possessive instinct inside his chest refused to let her hear this part of him. He would not allow the beast to terrify her.
Killian leaned in slightly closer, crowding the creature's field of vision. Rainwater slid down the sharp, lethal cheekbones of his face while his baritone dropped lower, turning completely animalistic.

"Tell whoever sent you to map my perimeter," he murmured, his breath hot against the hybrid's pale skin, "that if I smell even a fraction of your scent near her again—" His grip tightened, the leather of his glove creaking against bone. The hybrid choked sharply, his throat clicking. "—I will pull your spine out through your throat."
The hybrid's pupils dilated to pinpricks. It wasn't the graphic nature of the threat that terrified him; it was the absolute, chilling certainty in Killian's voice. He meant it. Every single syllable.
---
Then—another voice drifted smoothly through the silver mist of the alley.
"That is quite enough, Virel."
Killian didn't turn his head immediately. He didn't need to; his senses had already cataloged the newcomer's heartbeat.
Adrian Keller emerged gracefully from the deep shadows of the opposite sidewalk beneath a sleek black umbrella. His tailored gray coat was entirely untouched by the rain despite the severity of the storm. He looked calm. Elegant. Coldly observant.
The pinned hybrid visibly stiffened, his gaze darting between the two Alphas.
"Do not let me see your face in this sector again," Adrian said mildly, his tone conversational. A heavy pause hung in the freezing air. Then, his voice dropped into something infinitely colder: "Especially around her."
Because unlike Killian's explosive, physical violence—Adrian's absolute calm felt ancient.
The hybrid swallowed hard, his throat clicking against Killian's palm.
The moment Killian deliberately loosened his iron grip, the hybrid tore himself free, stumbling backward into the rain-dark shadows of the alley. Before disappearing entirely, he shot one final, manic look toward Claire's lit window, then leveled a bleeding smile at Killian.
"You're already too attached, Alpha," the creature whispered, his voice fading into the wind. Then, with an impossible, blurred velocity, he vanished into the darkness of the rain.
Adrian studied his face quietly from beneath his umbrella, his expression thoughtful. "You handled that remarkably poorly."
"That will continue to happen," Adrian noted smoothly, stepping closer. "She is a human moving through a city. You cannot kill everyone who glances in her direction."
The luminescent gold flickered briefly again behind Killian's dark lashes. Dangerously so.
That heavy, absolute silence returned to Killian's face.
Adrian glanced once more up toward the sixth-floor apartment window, where Claire's light continued to glow softly against the dark Chicago skyline.
"She's the only thing calming your beast right now," Adrian murmured quietly, his voice laced with an ominous truth.
