"The Enemy in My Arms" Chapter 19:Tell Me the Truth
The hotel stairwell smelled like dust, rainwater, and old concrete.
Somewhere below, music from the charity event drifted faintly upward through the emergency exit door, softened by distance and expensive walls. Laughter echoed from the ballroom several floors down while New York glittered outside narrow stairwell windows streaked with rain.
Valentina stood halfway between the twenty-second and twenty-third floors with her pulse hammering hard enough to make breathing feel sharp.
Adrian had lied to her again.
Not directly.
Worse.
Carefully.
Piece by piece.
And after the basement, after the assassins in the garage, after the blood on his hands—
she was done accepting half-truths.
The stairwell door burst open below her.
Adrian stopped instantly the second he saw her standing there.
Rain darkened the shoulders of his black coat while tension settled visibly across his face almost immediately.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.
Valentina almost laughed.
“That sentence is becoming a personality trait.”
Adrian closed the stairwell door behind him carefully before scanning the landing automatically.
Always checking exits.
Always listening.
Even now.
Valentina crossed her arms tightly against herself. “You disappeared from the ballroom.”
“I was working.”
“That’s not an answer anymore.”
His eyes lifted toward hers slowly.
Sharp.
Guarded.
Dangerous.
The same eyes that watched rooms like battlefields and people like potential threats.
The same eyes that looked almost haunted whenever she asked questions too close to the truth.
Adrian started walking upward toward her.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like approaching something unstable.
“You should go back downstairs,” he said quietly. “Luca’s already asking where you are.”
“I don’t care.”
“I do.”
The answer landed harder than expected.
For a second, neither moved.
Rain tapped softly against the narrow stairwell window while tension gathered tightly in the concrete space between them.
Then Valentina stepped downward one stair closer to him.
“No more warnings,” she said quietly. “No more cryptic conversations. No more pretending you’re just some bodyguard who accidentally learned how to kill people.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Valentina—”
“No.” Her voice sharpened instantly. “You don’t get to keep doing that.”
He stopped moving completely now.
The distance between them had narrowed enough that she could smell rain, gunpowder, and faint cigarette smoke lingering against his clothes.
“You knew about the basement.”
Silence.
“You knew Luca was killing people.”
More silence.
“You knew someone sent professional assassins after us.”
Adrian looked away briefly toward the stairwell window.
Wrong move.
Because guilty men always looked away eventually.
Valentina’s heartbeat quickened harder. “Who the hell are you?”
The question echoed softly through the stairwell.
Adrian still didn’t answer.
That finally broke something inside her patience.
“You don’t get to protect me and lie to me at the same time,” she snapped. “You don’t get to look at me like that while hiding whatever this really is.”
His eyes returned to hers instantly.
“Like what?”
The question came lower than before.
More dangerous.

Valentina swallowed once before answering.
“Like you already know how this ends.”
Silence crashed between them after that.
Real silence.
The kind that felt heavy enough to crush air from lungs.
Adrian stepped closer slowly.
One stair.
Then another.
Until he stood directly beneath her on the landing, close enough now that she had to tilt her head slightly to hold eye contact.
“You should stop asking questions,” he said quietly.
“No.”
“You’re making yourself a target.”
“I already am one.”
“That’s not the point.”
“Then tell me the point.”
Frustration finally cracked through his control then.
Tiny fracture.
But visible.
“You think this is about Luca,” Adrian said sharply. “You think he’s the worst thing in this situation because he’s the only monster you can see.”
Valentina stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian dragged one hand across his face briefly before looking away again.
For the first time since meeting him, he looked exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with physical violence.
The exhaustion of someone carrying too much for too long.
“You need to leave New York,” he said finally.
That froze her instantly.
Not because of the suggestion.
Because of the fear beneath it.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Valentina stepped closer now too, refusing to let him retreat emotionally again. “No. Absolutely not. You don’t get to say something like that and walk away.”
Adrian laughed once beneath his breath.
No humor in it.
“You still think you have choices.”
“Explain.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because the less you know, the safer you are.”
“There it is again,” she whispered angrily. “That line. That fucking line.”
Her voice echoed sharply through the empty stairwell now.
“You keep deciding what’s safe for me without telling me the truth. You keep acting like I’m too fragile to handle reality.”
“That’s not what this is.”
“Then what is it?”
Adrian looked directly at her again.
And suddenly she realized something terrifying.
He wasn’t afraid for himself.
He was afraid for her.
“I have done terrible things,” he said quietly.
The words settled heavily into the space between them.
Valentina held his gaze steadily. “I know.”
“No,” Adrian replied. “You know pieces.”
Rain rolled harder outside while distant ballroom music drifted faintly upward beneath the silence.
“You think Luca is dangerous because he enjoys violence,” Adrian continued softly. “But men like Luca are predictable. Ego. Power. Fear. They all follow patterns eventually.”
His voice lowered further.
“The people behind this don’t.”
Cold spread slowly through Valentina’s chest.
Behind this.
Not Luca.
Again.
Always that implication.
She searched his face carefully now. “Who are you working for?”
Adrian’s expression closed instantly.
Too late.
The reaction itself answered enough.
Valentina exhaled shakily. “Jesus Christ.”
He said nothing.
Because now he understood she was finally seeing it.
Not bodyguard.
Not mercenary.
Something else.
Something buried much deeper inside Luca’s world.
“You’re undercover,” she whispered.
Adrian looked away again.
Confirmation.
Her pulse surged violently now.
“Federal?” she pressed.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Still no answer.
Frustration and fear crashed together inside her chest hard enough to burn.
Valentina stepped closer until almost no distance remained between them. “Tell me the truth for once.”
Adrian looked down at her then.
Really looked.
Rainwater still clung to dark strands of hair falling across his forehead while exhaustion and restraint warred visibly behind his eyes.
When he finally spoke again, his voice had become dangerously quiet.
“The truth,” he said slowly, “is that if you stay close to me much longer, you’re going to get killed.”
The words should have frightened her.
Instead, something worse happened.
She believed him completely.
