"Heartbeat Under Fire" Chapter 37
Chapter 37 – Sacrifice and Survival
Clara Hart crouched behind a shattered wall, but her eyes were glued to the tense scene unfolding in the open street.
Ethan Cross moved forward, gloves snapping tight around his tools, blue eyes locked on the small civilian woman lying on the ground.
The bomb strapped to her torso was intricate, wired with a cruel precision that sent a shiver down Ethan’s spine.
“Stand back,” he commanded, voice steady, heart pounding. “I can disarm this.”
Clara exhaled slowly, pressing the civilians behind cover. “Be careful,” she whispered, hands clenched around her camera strap.
Amir and Leila huddled close, faces pale, eyes wide, gripping her fingers as they watched the delicate procedure.
Ethan knelt carefully, assessing each wire, each connection, calculating the sequence in his mind.
“You’re going to be okay,” he murmured to the woman, though his words held both reassurance and tense authority.
The woman’s eyes were wide, sweat glistening on her forehead. “Please… hurry,” she said softly, voice trembling, a fragile mask of fear.
Ethan worked meticulously, gloved hands steady despite the terror thrumming in his chest. He noted every detail: the fuse placement, the wiring patterns, the ticking sequence hidden beneath fabric.
Clara’s pulse raced, watching his movements with bated breath. Every second felt infinite.
“Almost there,” Ethan whispered, precision and focus sharpening with each movement.
Suddenly, the woman’s eyes shifted, a strange gleam replacing the fear. She gritted her teeth and reached toward the device.
“No!” Ethan shouted, but it was too late. Her hands trembled over the trigger.
Marcus, Ethan’s best friend and fellow soldier, reacted instantly, lunging toward her with practiced speed.
The world seemed to slow as Marcus threw himself onto the woman, shoving her away from Ethan and the civilians.
The explosion ripped through the street, deafening, throwing Clara to the ground, debris raining down.
Smoke, fire, and the acrid smell of destruction filled her lungs as she struggled to rise.
Clara’s eyes widened in horror, searching the wreckage. Marcus and the woman were gone, swallowed by the blast.
“No… no…” she whispered, voice cracking, heart hammering.
Ethan fell to his knees beside her, chest heaving, blue eyes wide with shock and grief. “Marcus… he saved me,” he choked out, voice raw.
Clara reached for him, hands trembling. “He… he’s gone, Ethan. I—”
Ethan’s hands clenched into fists, nails digging into his palms. “No! I should have seen it! I should have disarmed it faster. I should have—”
Clara placed a hand on his shoulder, grounding him. “It wasn’t your fault! He made the choice to protect you!”
He shook his head violently, tears streaming down his face. “But my best friend… he’s gone because of me. If I had noticed the wiring… if I had been faster… he wouldn’t—”
Clara’s own chest tightened, emotions raw. “Ethan… she wasn’t innocent. She was one of them. A terrorist. It wasn’t just luck or timing—it was deception.”

Ethan’s gaze flicked toward the smoking debris where Marcus and the woman had been, realization and rage mingling. “She… she was one of them? All along?”
“Yes,” Clara said softly, voice shaking. “It was a trap. She was a disguise, pretending to be a civilian to get close to you.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, fists clenching further. “Marcus… he died… for me. And she—she used him to protect herself and that bomb. My best friend… my brother in arms…”
Clara placed both hands on his shoulders. “Ethan… breathe. Marcus made the choice to protect you. That doesn’t make it your fault. He knew what he was doing.”
Ethan’s blue eyes glistened with tears, jaw trembling. “I… I failed him. I failed Marcus. I should have seen it coming… I should have…”
Clara knelt beside him, voice calm but urgent. “Look at me. He saved your life. And he trusted you to keep going. Marcus’s sacrifice wasn’t in vain. You have to survive, Ethan. For him, for all of us.”
He exhaled shakily, chest heaving. “I keep seeing it… the wires, the blast… I can’t… I keep thinking I could have saved him.”
Clara pressed her forehead gently against his. “You did everything you could in the moment. None of this was your fault. The world… the city… the terrorists… they made the rules. We follow them, we survive, we remember.”
The civilians behind cover had remained silent, eyes wide, but Clara turned briefly to reassure them. “We’re okay. We’re still alive. He saved us, and that’s what matters.”
Ethan wiped his face roughly, finally exhaling, but his body remained tense, grief and guilt clawing at his chest.
Clara whispered softly, “You’re not alone in this, Ethan. We’ll get through it. We’ll honor Marcus… by surviving, by fighting, and by remembering him every step of the way.”
The smoking street stretched before them, a scarred battlefield marked by sacrifice and deception. Ethan’s hands trembled as he lifted his head, green eyes locking briefly with Clara’s.
“I… I can’t believe he’s gone,” he murmured, voice breaking.
Clara shook her head gently. “He’s gone, yes. But his courage… his sacrifice… it saved lives today. Including yours. Marcus would want you to keep going, Ethan.”
Ethan’s chest rose and fell heavily, grief mingling with rage, guilt, and despair. “I failed him… my brother… my friend…”
Clara’s voice was steady, grounding him. “You did not. You did everything humanly possible. He chose to save you. Remember that.”
Ethan exhaled slowly, eyes fixed on the smoke-filled ruins where Marcus and the woman had been, absorbing the devastating weight of the loss.
Clara took his hand, a grounding gesture. “We’ll carry him with us. Every decision, every step forward… he’s with us.”
He nodded slowly, jaw tight, gripping her hand. The world was scarred, but amidst the chaos, trust, memory, and the bond forged in fire remained.
The distant city noise continued, a reminder that survival required vigilance, courage, and endurance. Ethan’s chest heaved, and he finally whispered, “For Marcus… we keep going.”
Clara nodded, green eyes meeting his, silent affirmation passing between them. “For Marcus,” she echoed softly.
