"Bride of the Black Wolf King" Chapter 33 The Wolves That Wouldn’t Obey
Chapter 33
The Wolves That Wouldn’t Obey
The attack came just before dawn.
Naturally.
Nothing terrible ever waited for reasonable daylight anymore.
Lyra woke to wolves snarling outside the tent.
Not ordinary patrol noise.
Violence.
The sound ripped through the campsite hard enough that she sat upright instantly beneath the blankets while snow-laden wind battered the tent walls around them.
Kael was already moving.
Of course he was.
One second he sat beside the dying lantern half-awake in travel leathers.
The next—
he had a blade in one hand and the tent flap thrown open before Lyra fully processed the noise outside.
Cold air crashed inward carrying blood and chaos with it.
“Stay inside.”
Kael’s voice came sharp and immediate.
Not discussion.
Instinct.
Lyra ignored him immediately.
Also instinct.
Outside, the eastern mountain pass had descended into complete chaos.
Blackfang wolves lunged through the snow while soldiers scrambled awake around collapsing fire pits and overturned supply carts. Several horses screamed in panic near the tree line.
And moving through all of it—
rogue wolves.
Not ordinary rogues either.
These wolves looked half-starved and unnaturally aggressive, dark fur matted with blood and snow while silver chains hung broken around several of their throats.
Experimented on.
Controlled once.
No longer sane.
“What the hell are those?” Mirelle shouted while dragging a wounded guard away from the central fire.
Fenrir blocked one lunging wolf with both blades before swearing violently.
“Someone sent them!”
Kael moved straight into the center of the attack.
No hesitation.
No fear.
Just lethal efficiency sharpened by years of surviving northern wars.
Lyra had seen him fight before.
But battle changed him completely.
Every movement looked instinctive and brutal in ways human language struggled to describe properly. Wolves larger than horses crashed toward him through the snow only to hit the ground seconds later bleeding beneath black steel and flashing gold eyes.
The Black Wolf King belonged to violence in the same way storms belonged to mountains.
And somehow—
that terrified her less now.
Another rogue wolf burst through the outer camp perimeter straight toward the supply tents where several younger soldiers still struggled to arm themselves.
Lyra reacted before thinking.
Again.
“Stop!”
The command tore from her instinctively.
The wolf froze mid-charge.
Not slowed.
Stopped.
Snow swirled violently around Lyra while the silver marks beneath her skin flared bright enough to illuminate the storm-dark campsite.
Several Blackfang wolves immediately lowered themselves toward her.
The rogue wolf whimpered.
Every soldier nearby turned to stare.
No one had gotten used to this yet.
Least of all Lyra.
Kael noticed instantly across the battlefield.
His attention snapped toward her hard enough that the wolf fighting beside him physically recoiled from the sudden shift in his focus.
And then—
something larger emerged from the tree line.
The alpha rogue.
The creature dwarfed the others easily, black-gray fur streaked with old scars while one ruined eye glowed silver beneath the snowstorm.
Not natural silver.
Moon silver.
Elder Thorne’s warning flashed instantly through Lyra’s mind:
Some kingdoms experimented with old blood long after the Lunar Houses fell.
Oh no.
The alpha rogue ignored every soldier in the camp.
Ignored Fenrir.
Ignored Kael.
Its attention locked directly onto Lyra.
And suddenly—
it charged.
“LYRA!”
Kael’s voice ripped through the storm.
Too far away.
Everything happened violently fast afterward.
The rogue alpha tore through the snow hard enough to send soldiers flying aside while Lyra’s instincts scrambled uselessly between fear and power and the terrible realization that she didn’t actually know how to control either yet.
The wolf reached her in seconds.
Huge.
Fast.
Mouth open.
And Kael moved.
He crossed the distance impossibly quickly, shifting partially mid-motion while claws ripped through gloves and gold flooded his eyes completely.
Kael slammed into the rogue alpha hard enough both wolves crashed violently through the supply cart behind Lyra.
Wood exploded across the snow.
The sound that tore from Kael afterward barely sounded human.
The two wolves collided savagely through the storm, teeth and claws and blood against white snow while Blackfang soldiers scrambled desperately backward out of the way.
Kael fought like something born for war.
But the rogue alpha fought like something with nothing left to lose.
And that made it dangerous.
The rogue wolf tore across Kael’s side suddenly deep enough that blood sprayed dark against the snow.
Lyra’s stomach dropped instantly.
“Kael!”
The name escaped her before thought.
And the moment it did—
the world shifted again.
The silver power beneath her skin erupted violently.
Not softly this time.
Not accidentally.
The storm itself reacted.
Wind slammed through the mountain pass hard enough to knock soldiers sideways while silver light spiraled outward from Lyra across the battlefield in sharp burning waves.
Every wolf froze.
Every single one.
Kael looked toward her through the snow.
And for one terrifying second—
the rogue alpha lunged straight for his exposed throat while his attention remained on Lyra instead.
Lyra reacted instinctively.
Again.
“Kneel.”
The command exploded across the mountainside like thunder.
The rogue alpha hit the snow instantly.
So did every other wolf in the storm.
Blackfang wolves.
Rogues.
All of them collapsing beneath the force of her voice.
Silence crashed through the campsite afterward.
Only the storm remained.
Kael stayed crouched in the snow breathing hard, blood staining one side of his torn black coat while silver light reflected sharply across his gold eyes.
And all around him—
northern wolves knelt before Lyra without hesitation.
Several soldiers looked horrified.
Others looked awed.
Fenrir simply stared into the snow like a man reconsidering every life choice leading to this exact moment.
Lyra stood trembling at the center of the storm while silver marks burned bright beneath her skin.
And for the first time since her power awakened—
she realized something dangerous.
The wolves didn’t obey because they feared her.
They obeyed because something ancient inside them recognized her as theirs to follow.
Kael rose slowly through the snow afterward without taking his eyes off her once.
And judging by the stunned silence spreading through the Blackfang soldiers around them—
they had just realized it too.
