Chapter 4
The Wedding Under the Blood Moon
The wedding took place three nights later beneath a sky that looked bruised purple with snow clouds.
By sunset, the entire Vale territory had transformed itself into something almost beautiful.
Lanterns hung from pine branches around the village square. White ribbons drifted in the wind from balcony rails and watch posts. Someone had scattered winter roses along the stone pathway leading toward the ceremonial platform near the sacred fire pit.
From a distance, it probably resembled celebration.
Up close, it felt more like preparation for an execution everyone had agreed not to discuss too openly.
Lyra stood in the small dressing room beside the pack temple while two seamstresses adjusted the sleeves of her wedding gown in silence.
Neither woman would meet her eyes.
The dress itself was beautiful in the way expensive cages often were.
Silver-white silk layered beneath translucent embroidery, delicate moon patterns stitched along the bodice with thread fine enough to shimmer whenever candlelight touched it. The gown had clearly been designed to impress northern nobility.
Not to comfort the girl wearing it.
“You’re pulling too tightly,” Mirelle said quietly from the corner.
One seamstress immediately loosened the corset ties.
“Sorry.”
Lyra hadn’t even realized she was struggling to breathe.
Outside the temple walls, distant music drifted through the evening air. Drums mostly. Low and rhythmic. Traditional mating ceremony music from the northern territories.
The sound unsettled her.
Not because it was aggressive.
Because it wasn’t.
The music sounded old. Ancient enough that it seemed less performed than remembered by instinct.
Mirelle approached slowly once the seamstresses finished their work.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Mirelle reached up carefully and adjusted one silver strand of Lyra’s hair behind her ear.
“You look lovely.”
Lyra laughed softly before she could stop herself.
“That bad, huh?”
Mirelle’s mouth tightened.
“You know what I mean.”
Unfortunately, she did.
A knock sounded at the door.
One of Rowan’s guards stepped inside.
“It’s time.”
Simple words.
Heavy ones.
The walk toward the ceremonial platform felt strangely dreamlike.
Villagers lined the pathways holding lanterns against the snowstorm, their faces flickering gold beneath firelight as Lyra passed.
Some looked pitying.
Others relieved.
A few openly curious.
Like they were watching history happen from a safe distance.
Children stared at her the longest.
Especially the girls.
The sacred platform stood at the center of the square surrounded by black iron braziers burning blue northern flames.
Kael was already there.
Of course he was.
The Black Wolf King did not look like a man made for ceremonies.
He stood beside the sacred altar wearing black formal armor beneath a long dark coat trimmed with wolf fur, one gloved hand resting behind his back while snow settled slowly across his shoulders.
The northern soldiers behind him remained perfectly still.
Like shadows waiting for orders.
Kael looked toward her the moment she stepped into the square.
Not dramatically.
Not hungrily.
But with that same unnerving concentration from the courtyard three nights earlier.
As though some private instinct kept circling back toward her despite his better judgment.
Lyra tried not to stumble while climbing the platform steps.
The entire village watched her.
She could feel it.
Every whisper she’d ever overheard seemed to gather beneath her skin all at once.
Moon-cursed.
Wolfless.
Weak.
Unwanted.
And now:
bride.
Rowan stood near the ceremonial fire waiting for her.
Her father looked regal tonight beneath formal Alpha robes embroidered with the Vale crest. Anyone watching from outside the territory might’ve mistaken him for a proud father giving away his daughter.
Lyra wondered briefly if he had practiced that expression beforehand.
The High Elder began the ceremony once she reached the altar.
Ancient words flowed through the cold night air while snow drifted steadily around them.
Most mating ceremonies among southern packs involved symbolic gestures.
Shared wine.
Joined hands.
Oaths before the Moon Goddess.
Northern customs were different.
Older.
More territorial.
“The Blackfang Dominion accepts this union before moon and blood,” the Elder intoned.
Kael’s gaze never left Lyra’s face.
Not even once.
It should have made her uncomfortable.
Instead, what unsettled her most was the strange absence of mockery in it.
He didn’t look at her the way the Vale pack always had.
Not defective.
Not embarrassing.
Not disappointing.
Whatever he saw instead seemed to confuse him almost as much as it frightened her.
“Do you enter this bond willingly?” the Elder asked formally.
The question was ceremonial.
Everyone knew that.
No one here truly expected honesty from sacrificial marriages.
Lyra opened her mouth anyway.
And hesitated.
Because suddenly every eye in the square felt unbearably heavy.
The villagers.
Her father.
The northern soldiers.
Kael.
All waiting.
Finally she said quietly:
“I enter it knowingly.”
Not willingly.
Knowingly.
Fenrir’s mouth twitched slightly somewhere behind Kael.
Like he noticed the distinction immediately.
Kael probably did too.
But he said nothing.
The ceremony continued.
Moon oil burned inside the braziers, filling the air with sharp herbal smoke while silver ceremonial markings were painted across both their wrists.
As the Elder traced the final symbol against Lyra’s skin, something strange happened.
The markings glowed.
Only briefly.
A pulse of pale silver light beneath her wrist.
Small enough that half the crowd probably missed it.
But Kael didn’t.
His expression changed instantly.
Not visibly enough for most people to notice.
Just a slight tightening around his eyes.
Like someone hearing a distant sound nobody else could catch.
The Elder faltered for half a second before continuing.
Unease moved quietly through the northern soldiers.
Even the wolves near the platform had become restless again.
Lyra felt it too.
A warmth spreading slowly beneath her skin where the symbols touched her.
Not painful.
Almost familiar.
Which somehow frightened her more.
Then came the final vow.
The binding vow.
Northern custom required physical contact during the oath exchange.
Usually hands.
Sometimes wrists.
Among dominant Alpha bloodlines, however—
the throat.
Lyra realized what was about to happen a second too late.
Kael stepped forward.
One large gloved hand closed carefully around the front of her throat.
The entire square went still.
He wasn’t choking her.
Not even close.
But the sheer size of his hand against her neck made something instinctive inside her pulse sharply awake.
His touch radiated heat through the freezing air.
The vow should have sounded threatening in another man’s voice.
Instead Kael spoke with a calmness that made it infinitely worse.
“I claim your life beneath the northern moon.”
The words settled low and steady against her skin.
“I claim your loyalty before blood and fang.”
His thumb shifted slightly beneath her jaw as though testing something.
Or resisting something.
Lyra should have been terrified.
Part of her was.
But standing this close to him created another feeling underneath the fear.
Awareness.
Overwhelming awareness.
The scent of smoke and snow clinging to his coat.
The rough warmth of leather against her skin.
The way his breathing changed almost imperceptibly when she looked directly into his eyes.
Then Kael stopped speaking.
Mid-vow.
His hand tightened suddenly against her throat.
Not enough to hurt.
Enough to feel.
A strange expression crossed his face.
His pupils had narrowed sharply now, gold eyes fixed on her with unsettling intensity.
Like his wolf had caught something unexpected.
Something impossible.
The silver markings beneath Lyra’s skin pulsed again.
Brighter this time.
Kael inhaled sharply.
And for one brief moment—
she could have sworn the entire world narrowed down to the space between his hand around her throat and the look in his eyes.
Not hatred.
Not desire.
Something far more dangerous.
Recognition.
