Chapter 36 — Beneath Nothing

The sea sounded different at night.

Softer than gunfire.

Softer than panic.

Softer than the voices Kael still heard sometimes when sleep turned cruel.

Waves rolled quietly against the cliffs below the coastal house while rain tapped gently against open windows carrying salt air through the dark rooms.

Portugal, according to their forged documents.

A tiny fishing town where nobody asked questions and everyone minded their own business.

Perfect place for ghosts trying to learn how to become human again.

Six months since BLACK VEIL collapsed.

Six months since Director Veyne died in the snow.

Six months since Kael chose love over obedience and destroyed the only identity ORPHEUS ever allowed him to have.

Recovery, it turned out, was not cinematic.

It was slow.

Uneven.

Quietly painful.

Some nights Kael still woke reaching for weapons that no longer existed beside the bed.

Some mornings he stood near exits automatically before realizing no one hunted them anymore.

Sometimes loud noises still dragged violence back into his nervous system before thought could catch up.

Healing wasn’t linear.

It was survival learning softness one terrifying inch at a time.

But now—

He didn’t survive it alone.

Kael stood barefoot on the balcony outside the coastal house staring silently at the ocean beneath moonlight while insomnia settled heavily across his shoulders.

Old habit.

The inability to sleep deeply never fully disappeared.

Behind him the bedroom remained warm and dimly lit.

Eliana slept tangled beneath blankets somewhere inside.

Safe.

Still here.

That realization never stopped feeling miraculous.

Kael closed his eyes briefly against the sea wind.

And immediately saw snow again.

Blood in white silence.

Eliana collapsing into his arms.

His chest tightened sharply.

Nightmares came less often now.

But when they came—

They still knew exactly where to cut.

“You disappeared again.”

Eliana’s voice drifted softly through the doorway behind him.

Kael opened his eyes immediately.

She stood there half asleep wrapped in one of his oversized sweaters, dark hair loose around her shoulders while moonlight painted silver across warm skin.

Beautiful.

Always devastatingly beautiful.

Kael looked at her quietly for several seconds before speaking.

“Sorry.”

Eliana sighed softly.

“There’s that apology habit again.”

A tiny smile touched the corner of his mouth.

Progress.

Still progress.

She crossed the balcony slowly and stopped beside him overlooking the ocean.

Neither spoke immediately.

They didn’t always need to anymore.

The silence between them had changed over the months.

No longer tense.

Safe.

Eliana leaned lightly against his shoulder beneath the cold sea wind.

Kael relaxed instantly.

Automatic now.

His body learned her presence meant safety before his mind fully caught up.

“You had another nightmare,” she murmured softly.

Not a question.

Kael stared toward the waves below.

“Yes.”

Honesty came easier now too.

Difficult.

Still unfamiliar.

But easier.

Eliana reached for his hand slowly.

Scarred fingers against hers.

Real.

Alive.

Kael looked down briefly at their joined hands while the ocean roared softly beneath the cliffs.

Then quietly admitted:

“I saw Richter again.”

Eliana’s chest tightened softly.

Kael rarely spoke about ORPHEUS voluntarily.

Some memories still lived too deep beneath scar tissue.

“You’re here now,” she whispered.

Kael’s jaw shifted faintly.

“I know.”

A pause.

“But part of me still expects to wake up back there.”

God.

The exhaustion in his voice.

Not fear exactly.

Conditioning residue.

Years of surviving impossible things that taught his nervous system peace could never last.

Eliana turned toward him fully then.

Moonlight caught faint silver through her amber-hazel eyes while sea wind lifted dark strands of hair across her face.

“You know what I think?”

Kael looked at her quietly.

“I think healing scares you more than violence ever did.”

The sentence landed softly.

Accurately.

Kael laughed once beneath his breath.

Small sound.

“Probably.”

Because violence made sense.

Pain made sense.

But happiness?

Safety?

Love?

Those things still felt dangerously temporary sometimes.

Eliana studied him carefully beneath the moonlight.

No tactical armor anymore.

No weapons strapped beneath black clothing.

No constant mission briefings carved into posture.

Just Kael.

Still scarred.

Still healing.

But undeniably human now.

And suddenly her chest ached with quiet overwhelming affection.

“You know,” she murmured softly, “for someone trained to suppress attachment, you became embarrassingly clingy.”

Kael blinked once.

Slowly.

“I am not clingy.”

“Eliana where are you going?”

She lowered her voice into a near-perfect imitation of him.

“Eliana don’t walk alone.”

“Eliana I noticed your heartbeat changed.”

Kael looked genuinely offended now.

“I was monitoring threats.”

“You followed me into the kitchen because I went to make tea.”

A pause.

“That kitchen has knives.”

Eliana laughed softly.

God.

The sound still ruined him.

Kael watched her smiling beneath moonlight and suddenly felt something strange settle quietly inside his chest.

Peace.

Not complete.

Not permanent.

But real enough to touch.

Eliana stepped closer slowly.

Close enough now that the sea wind disappeared beneath warmth and breathing.

Kael’s hand settled instinctively against her waist.

Always there now.

Always grounding himself through contact.

Her fingers rose gently toward his face.

Kael still went still whenever she touched him unexpectedly.

Not fear anymore.

Wonder.

Eliana brushed her thumb lightly along the faint scar near his jaw.

Then toward the black fabric mask hanging loosely around his neck.

Not tactical anymore.

Just habit.

Residual comfort.

A relic.

Kael watched her carefully while she slowly hooked two fingers beneath the fabric.

Permission.

Always permission.

Eliana removed the mask gently.

Moonlight touched his uncovered face fully.

Sharp features softened by exhaustion and healing.

Steel-grey eyes no longer empty.

Human.

Entirely human.

Kael’s breathing faltered slightly beneath the intimacy of it.

Because months later—

Being seen still affected him.

Eliana held the mask loosely in one hand while studying him quietly.

Then softly:

“There you are.”

The exact words he whispered after their first kiss.

Recognition flickered instantly through Kael’s expression.

Emotion followed immediately afterward.

Deep.

Quiet.

Real.

He leaned down slowly until his forehead rested against hers beneath the sound of the ocean.

No masks.

No Ghost.

No BLACK VEIL.

Only Kael breathing softly against the woman who rebuilt his humanity one gentle touch at a time.

“I love you,” he whispered.

Simple words.

Terrifying words.

Words ORPHEUS tried to burn out of him before he even understood what they meant.

Eliana smiled softly against his mouth.

“I know.”

Kael laughed quietly then.

Real laughter.

Small.

Warm.

And somewhere beyond the cliffs, the sea kept moving endlessly beneath moonlight while two survivors stood together in the dark learning that healing did not mean forgetting the past.

It meant finally believing they deserved a future anyway.
