Chapter 32 — Burned Sanctuary

The first sniper round shattered the kitchen window at 5:42 a.m.

Glass exploded across the cabin walls.

Kael reacted before the sound fully registered.

“Eliana DOWN—”

He tackled her sideways just as automatic gunfire ripped through the living room where they’d been standing seconds earlier.

Wood splintered violently.

The fireplace exploded into sparks.

And the peaceful little cabin that briefly felt like home became a battlefield instantly.

Reality always returned eventually.

Kael hit the floor hard with Eliana beneath him while bullets shredded the ceiling overhead.

His entire body locked into combat instinct immediately.

Ghost returned in under a heartbeat.

Except now—

Fear came first.

Because Eliana was under him.

Alive.

Still alive.

Outside the cabin engines roared through snow-covered forest roads.

Multiple vehicles.

BLACK VEIL extraction units.

Too many.

Kael’s stomach turned cold instantly.

No.

No no no.

They found them.

“Eliana stay behind me.”

The command came sharp enough to cut.

Kael reached for the rifle hidden beneath the couch while another sniper round punched through the wall inches above his shoulder.

Snow blew violently through broken windows now.

Alarms from abandoned perimeter sensors screamed outside.

The sanctuary collapsed around them in real time.

And somewhere beyond the chaos—

Kane shouted through a megaphone.

“Kael!”

The voice hit like physical impact.

Kael froze microscopically.

Impossible.

“Eliana move!”

He dragged her behind overturned furniture just as the front porch exploded beneath incoming fire.

Smoke flooded the cabin instantly.

Kael checked ammunition mechanically while his pulse slowed into deadly combat rhythm.

But underneath all the tactical focus—

One thought repeated violently:

Protect her.

Always her.

Kane’s voice came again through the storm outside.

“Ghost stand down!”

Gunfire answered instead.

Not Kael’s.

BLACK VEIL assault teams breached the eastern tree line immediately afterward while tactical lasers swept through cabin windows.

Eliana’s pulse hammered violently.

This wasn’t retrieval anymore.

This was execution.

Kael noticed the fear in her expression instantly.

His gloved hand cupped the side of her face for one brief impossible second despite bullets tearing through the cabin around them.

“Stay with me.”

God.

The fear beneath those words.

Then he was moving again.

Pure violence.

Pure precision.

Ghost carved through the cabin battlefield with terrifying efficiency while smoke and splintered wood swallowed the once peaceful living room whole.

Two operatives breached the rear entrance.

Dead instantly.

Another tried the kitchen side window.

Kael shot him through the wall before the man fully entered.

Eliana watched him move through destruction like instinct given human form.

Not cold.

Not detached.

Desperate.

Because this wasn’t mission survival anymore.

This was personal.

The roof groaned violently overhead after another explosive hit the northern side of the cabin.

Fire spread instantly across old wooden beams.

Everything burned fast.

Too fast.

“Eliana MOVE!”

Kael grabbed her wrist and dragged her through smoke-filled corridors toward the rear exit while the cabin collapsed around them.

Snow blasted across their faces the second they burst outside.

And the forest looked worse.

Floodlights.

Armed operatives.

Thermal scopes.

BLACK VEIL had surrounded the entire property.

Kael shoved Eliana behind a fallen tree seconds before sniper fire ripped through the snow where her head had been.

“South route blocked!” Mira screamed through comms somewhere nearby.

Kael’s jaw tightened violently.

No escape.

Not cleanly.

Kane emerged through the trees then.

Weapon raised.

Snowstorm whipping around tactical armor.

And for one fractured second—

Nobody fired.

Kael stared at him silently across burning snowlight.

Kane looked wrecked.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Because the rifle in his hands pointed directly at his best friend.

“Eliana,” Kane said quietly without looking away from Kael, “go.”

Kael immediately stepped in front of her.

Protective instinct.

Absolute.

Kane’s expression twisted painfully.

“Don’t make me do this.”

God.

The conflict in his voice.

Years of loyalty tearing apart in real time.

Kael raised his weapon slightly.

Not threatening.

Prepared.

“You already chose.”

The sentence landed hard.

Kane flinched visibly.

Then BLACK VEIL operatives opened fire from the western ridge and everything collapsed again.

Chaos exploded across the forest.

Snow.

Blood.

Gunfire.

Firelight from the burning cabin behind them.

Kael fired continuously while dragging Eliana deeper into the trees between bursts of sniper rounds.

But BLACK VEIL kept closing in.

Too many.

Always too many.

“Eliana run!”

She shook her head instantly.

“No!”

Another explosive detonated nearby hard enough to throw snow and dirt across them both.

Kael grabbed her face violently.

“LISTEN TO ME—”

Then the sniper laser appeared.

Tiny red dot.

Directly against Kael’s chest.

Eliana saw it first.

Time slowed instantly.

Kane saw it too.

And froze.

Because the sniper behind him had already pulled the trigger.

Eliana moved before thinking.

Again.

Always.

She shoved Kael sideways hard enough to throw him off balance—

The bullet hit her instead.

Impact exploded through her abdomen violently.

Eliana’s breath disappeared instantly.

Warmth spread fast beneath winter air.

Then suddenly the ground rushed upward toward her.

Sound blurred strangely.

Snow against her cheek.

Distant screaming.

Kael.

Someone screaming her name.

No—

Not screaming.

Breaking.

Kael caught her before she fully collapsed into the snow.

His gloves immediately covered in blood.

Too much blood.

“Eliana.”

The sound of her name in his voice nearly shattered the entire forest.

Not Ghost anymore.

Not even Kael fully.

Just raw panic.

She tried breathing.

Failed.

Pain spread cold and deep through her stomach.

Kael pressed both hands desperately against the wound while blood soaked through his fingers almost instantly.

“No no no no—”

God.

Eliana had never heard him sound like this before.

Terrified.

Absolutely terrified.

Kane stood frozen nearby holding his rifle uselessly while BLACK VEIL operatives advanced through the trees behind him.

And suddenly his loyalty conflict stopped being theoretical.

Because Kael looked at Eliana like losing her would destroy whatever remained of him permanently.

“Eliana stay awake.”

His voice shook now.

Actually shook.

She tried focusing on his face.

Snow melting against dark hair.

Steel-grey eyes wide with horror.

No mask.

No armor left emotionally.

Only fear.

Pure unbearable fear.

“K-Kael…”

Blood touched her lips.

Kael’s expression broke completely.

“Don’t.”

The word came shattered.

Like hearing her struggle to speak physically hurt him.

Kane lowered his weapon slowly.

Snowstorm wind howled through burning trees around them while BLACK VEIL closed in from every direction.

But Kael noticed none of it anymore.

Only her.

Always her.

“Eliana look at me.”

His forehead pressed desperately against hers while blood soaked the snow beneath them both.

“You stay with me.”

And for the first time since ORPHEUS—

Ghost sounded like a man begging the universe not to take away the only thing that ever made him want to live.
