Chapter 23 — Was Any of It Real?

Kael found the file by accident.

At least that’s what Eliana told herself afterward.

Because the alternative—

That fate itself finally got tired of their lies—

felt worse.

The subway safehouse remained under partial lockdown after the breach alarm.

BLACK VEIL operatives moved through reinforced tunnels resetting surveillance routes and checking perimeter access while exhausted tension settled over everyone like smoke after a fire.

Kael hadn’t spoken much since the almost-kiss.

Not distant.

Worse.

Careful.

Like proximity itself had become dangerous now.

Eliana felt it too.

Every glance lingered too long.

Every silence stretched too soft.

And neither of them knew how to survive what almost happened in that storage room.

Which was exactly why she should’ve destroyed the encrypted drive sooner.

Instead it sat hidden beneath the false bottom of her tactical bag while she worked beside Noah Reyes in the communications room trying very hard not to think about Kael’s mouth inches from hers.

Terrible survival strategy overall.

“You’re distracted,” Noah muttered without looking up from his monitors.

Eliana kept typing.

“I’m multilingual. Emotional collapse comes naturally.”

Noah snorted softly.

Then alarms flickered briefly across one of the surveillance systems.

“Signal interference near west corridor,” he muttered.

Eliana’s attention shifted automatically.

Too late.

Because somewhere down the hallway—

Kael opened the wrong bag.

He only intended to retrieve ammunition.

That was all.

The communications room storage lockers were overcrowded after emergency relocation, and Kane had shoved tactical gear wherever space existed.

Kael moved through the dim corridor silently, exhaustion dragging at the edges of his concentration.

Then he found the encrypted drive.

Small.

Black.

Military-grade intelligence encryption.

Interesting.

Kael immediately recognized the symbol burned faintly into the metal casing.

Directorate intelligence.

Not BLACK VEIL.

His pulse slowed dangerously.

Cold instinct settling in.

Ghost.

The drive required biometric access.

Except someone had already overridden part of the security layer recently.

Kael stared at it for a long second.

Then connected it to the terminal anyway.

The first file opened instantly.

AGENT PROFILE:

ELIANA SERAPH VALE

Status:

Embedded Intelligence Asset

Operational Alias:

Lena Moreau

Mission Directive:

Monitor BLACK VEIL internal movement and Project ORPHEUS survivors.

Kael stopped breathing.

The screen blurred slightly.

No.

No.

His eyes moved lower mechanically.

Secondary Directive:

Gain proximity to operative GHOST-7 if possible.

Emotional leverage authorized.

Something inside him tore quietly in half.

The corridor suddenly felt too small.

Too hot.

Too loud.

Kael kept reading anyway.

Because pain sometimes becomes impossible to stop once it starts.

Handler communications loaded next.

HELENA CROSS.

Elegant manipulation wrapped in polished language.

Agent Vale has successfully established emotional proximity.

GHOST-7 attachment levels increasing.

Continue engagement.

Kael stared blankly at the words.

Emotional proximity.

Attachment levels.

Engagement.

Like everything between them had been reduced to tactical progress reports.

His chest tightened violently.

Not anger.

Worse.

Betrayal.

Raw enough to choke on.

Then finally—

The line that destroyed him completely.

Subject demonstrates increasing dependence on Agent Vale.

Subject.

Not Kael.

Not human.

Just another weapon being studied.

Something cracked.

Deep.

Permanent.

Kael closed the laptop slowly.

Too carefully.

Like violence sat one inch beneath his skin now.

Then footsteps sounded behind him.

Eliana.

Of course.

She stopped the moment she saw him standing beside the open files.

The world went silent.

No generators.

No distant voices.

Nothing.

Only this.

Kael turned toward her slowly.

And Eliana’s stomach dropped instantly.

Because she had never seen him look like this before.

Not violent.

Not cold.

Destroyed.

Steel-grey eyes hollowed open beneath unbearable restraint.

The expression on his face nearly stopped her heart.

“Kael—”

“Don’t.”

Quiet.

God.

Too quiet.

That was always worse.

Eliana stepped forward instinctively.

Kael stepped backward immediately.

Like her touch itself suddenly hurt.

The movement shattered something inside her chest.

“Kael, I can explain—”

“You used me.”

Flat.

Not accusation.

Recognition.

The pain beneath those three words nearly knocked the air from her lungs.

“It wasn’t like that.”

Kael laughed once.

Broken sound.

Humorless.

He looked down briefly at the open files again.

Then back at her.

“Wasn’t it?”

Eliana’s throat closed completely.

Because the worst part—

The truly unbearable part—

Was that at the beginning?

Yes.

Part of it had been operational.

She approached BLACK VEIL under orders.

She tracked Ghost intentionally.

She gained his trust deliberately.

But somewhere between subway tunnels and fever nights and rooftop confessions—

Everything became real.

Too real.

Kael’s voice lowered further.

Dangerously calm now.

“How long.”

“Eliana.”

“How long.”

She swallowed hard.

“Since Istanbul.”

Wrong answer.

She saw it immediately.

Because Kael’s expression physically flinched.

Tiny movement.

Devastating.

Istanbul.

The market.

The flowers.

The almost-smiles.

God.

“Eliana Vale,” he whispered softly. “You manipulated me from the beginning.”

“No.”

The word escaped instantly.

Desperate.

Real.

Kael stared at her.

And suddenly she realized something horrifying:

Ghost looked more wounded now than during torture.

More vulnerable than during panic attacks underground.

Because bullets were simple.

Pain was simple.

But trust—

Trust destroyed him completely.

“It changed,” she whispered.

Kael looked away immediately.

Like hearing that hurt worse somehow.

“You reported on me.”

Silence.

Eliana couldn’t breathe.

Because yes.

At first she had.

Operational summaries.

Behavioral patterns.

Psychological observations.

And now every single report felt monstrous in retrospect.

Kael’s jaw tightened violently.

“She knew about me.”

Helena Cross.

His conditioning.

His attachment.

His fear.

Everything.

Eliana stepped closer despite the danger.

“Kael please—”

“Don’t.”

This time sharper.

Real pain bleeding through restraint.

The corridor lights flickered weakly overhead.

And suddenly Ghost looked exhausted beyond survival itself.

“Was any of it real?”

There it was.

The question.

Not:

Did you betray me?

Not:

Who do you work for?

Only this.

Was any of it real?

Eliana’s eyes burned instantly.

Because somehow that question hurt her too.

More than anger would have.

“Yes.”

Immediate.

Absolute.

Kael stared at her silently.

Like he wanted desperately to believe her.

Which only made everything worse.

“Eliana,” he whispered roughly, “I would’ve burned the world down for you.”

God.

The devastation in his voice.

She stepped toward him again.

This time Kael didn’t retreat.

Didn’t move at all.

Just stood there looking shattered while the files remained open between them like exposed organs.

“It became real,” she whispered desperately. “You have to believe that.”

Kael closed his eyes briefly.

One fractured second.

Then finally looked at her again.

And somehow the emptiness in his expression frightened her more than rage ever could.

Because Ghost no longer looked angry.

He looked abandoned.

Like a child discovering love was another form of manipulation after all.

Kael reached down slowly.

Closed the laptop.

Then handed the drive back to her carefully.

Controlled.

Precise.

Emotionally dying in real time.

“Mission accomplished,” he said quietly.

The sentence cut straight through her chest.

Then Kael walked past her without another word.

And Eliana realized too late—

Some betrayals sounded exactly like heartbreak.
