Chapter 20 — Black Site

Kael disappeared sometime after 3 a.m.

Eliana realized it instantly.

Not because she’d been sleeping deeply.

Because some irrational part of her had already learned the shape of his presence nearby.

The safehouse bedroom remained dark except for pale moonlight bleeding through cracked curtains, silver against abandoned furniture and scattered tactical gear.

And the chair beside the window—

Empty.

Her stomach dropped immediately.

Cold.

Wrong.

Eliana sat upright too fast, pain pulling sharply through her healing shoulder wound.

No note.

No comm alert.

No mission briefing.

Nothing.

Which meant this wasn’t official BLACK VEIL business.

This was personal.

Dangerous.

She grabbed the comm device from the bedside table and stormed downstairs barefoot, pistol already strapped against her thigh beneath an oversized sweater.

Kane looked up from the safehouse kitchen instantly.

And from the expression on his face—

He already knew.

“Eliana—”

“Where is he.”

Not a question.

Kane rubbed exhausted hands down his face.

“He intercepted a lead tied to the old black sites.”

Her pulse spiked violently.

No.

Because there was only one reason Kael would leave alone for something like that.

Self-destruction.

“He’s been gone how long?”

“Forty minutes.”

“Why would you let him go alone?”

Kane laughed once.

Humorless.

“You think anybody here can stop Ghost when he gets like this?”

The silence answered for her.

Kane looked away briefly.

Then quietly:

“He wasn’t acting normal.”

Fear spread slowly through Eliana’s chest.

Not mission fear.

Worse.

Personal fear.

Because suddenly she could picture him perfectly:

driving alone through empty streets,

bleeding old trauma all over some forgotten warehouse,

trying to punish himself violently enough to feel clean again.

“Location,” she said flatly.

Kane hesitated.

“Eliana.”

“Location.”

Another pause.

Then finally:

“Industrial sector east river.”

Eliana was already moving before he finished speaking.

The abandoned factory looked dead from the outside.

Broken windows.

Rusted steel.

Rainwater dripping from exposed pipes beneath weak industrial moonlight.

But the moment Eliana entered through the collapsed loading bay—

She felt it.

The atmosphere.

Wrong.

Not abandoned.

Used.

Fresh cigarette smoke.

Mud-covered boot prints.

Recent vehicle tracks.

And beneath all of it—

Blood.

Her pulse accelerated sharply.

Somewhere deeper inside the factory, metal clanged violently.

Then a scream echoed through the darkness.

Male.

Raw.

Animal.

Eliana froze.

Because she recognized the second sound immediately afterward.

Kael’s voice.

Low.

Controlled.

Terrifyingly calm.

She moved deeper into the warehouse corridors with her pistol raised while distant thunder rolled outside.

The screaming came again.

Followed by another dull impact.

Then silence.

Eliana finally reached the open steel doorway at the end of the corridor—

And stopped completely.

Because Kael stood inside looking less human than she had ever seen him.

Blood covered his gloves.

His throat.

His black tactical shirt.

A man sat restrained to a steel chair beneath a hanging industrial light while bruises spread violently across his face and ribs.

Anton Bale.

Former BLACK VEIL interrogator.

Black-site specialist.

Monster.

And Kael was torturing him.

Not emotionally.

Professionally.

Anton coughed blood onto the concrete floor and laughed weakly through broken teeth.

“Still following orders like a good little weapon?”

Kael grabbed his jaw instantly.

“Where is the transfer site.”

Flat.

Emotionless.

Anton smiled wider despite the blood.

“God,” he rasped. “They really ruined you.”

Kael slammed his head backward against the chair hard enough to crack metal.

Eliana flinched involuntarily.

Not because of the violence.

Because Kael looked empty while doing it.

Ghost.

Weapon mode.

No hesitation.

No humanity.

Just brutal precision wrapped in exhausted rage.

“Eliana shouldn’t see this.”

The sentence escaped before she realized she spoke aloud.

Kael froze instantly.

The silence inside the warehouse changed immediately.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Slowly—

Very slowly—

Kael turned toward her.

And Eliana’s chest nearly stopped.

Because his steel-grey eyes looked horrifying tonight.

Not angry.

Not unstable.

Worse.

Dead tired.

Like he’d finally reached the end of whatever fragile control had been holding him together.

“Eliana,” he said quietly.

Her name sounded wrong in his mouth right now.

Too rough.

Too human for the brutality surrounding them.

Anton laughed again from the chair.

“So this is her.”

Kael’s expression darkened immediately.

“Shut up.”

Anton ignored him.

His swollen eyes shifted toward Eliana instead.

“He still wakes up screaming sometimes?”

The room went still.

Kael’s entire body locked.

Interesting.

That landed somewhere deep.

Anton smiled through blood.

“I trained half the boys from ORPHEUS myself.”

Eliana stopped breathing.

ORPHEUS.

The black-site conditioning program.

Children turned into weapons.

Kael said nothing.

But suddenly Eliana understood something terrifying:

Anton wasn’t just another target.

He was part of the reason Kael became Ghost.

The realization hit hard enough to ache physically.

Anton looked back toward Kael.

“You were always the quietest one.”

Kael grabbed him by the throat instantly.

Fast enough to blur.

“Where,” he repeated softly.

That softness felt more frightening than screaming would’ve.

Anton coughed violently but still laughed.

Sadistic bastard.

“You know what your problem is now, Ghost?”

Kael’s grip tightened harder.

Anton smiled anyway.

“You started wanting things.”

Silence.

Kael froze.

Tiny movement.

Devastating.

Because the sentence was true.

Eliana saw it immediately.

The exhaustion.

The emotional unraveling beneath all that terrifying restraint.

Kael wasn’t here only for information anymore.

He was here because violence felt easier than whatever he was becoming around her.

And suddenly she was terrified of losing him to that darkness completely.

“Eliana,” Kael said quietly without looking at her. “Leave.”

No.

The word settled instantly inside her chest.

No.

Because if she walked away right now—

He would disappear into Ghost again completely.

Anton looked at her and smirked weakly.

“You know he enjoys this, right?”

Kael’s jaw tightened violently.

Anton kept talking anyway.

Cruel men always did.

“They trained him young. Pain. obedience. emotional suppression.”

His eyes flicked toward Kael mockingly.

“Beautiful work, honestly.”

Something shifted behind Kael’s eyes then.

Not rage.

Self-hatred.

Deep enough to drown in.

And suddenly Eliana understood the real horror here:

Kael believed Anton.

At least partially.

God.

She stepped forward before thinking.

Again.

Always.

“Kael.”

His attention snapped toward her immediately.

Not the prisoner.

Her.

Eliana’s voice softened.

“You were a child.”

Silence.

Anton laughed weakly.

Naive.

But Kael—

Kael looked shattered.

Not visibly.

Not dramatically.

Just one tiny fracture beneath all the discipline.

Because no one had ever separated the weapon from the boy underneath before.

Anton spat blood onto the floor.

“She’ll fear you eventually too.”

Kael looked away instantly.

There it was.

The real fear.

Not death.

Not violence.

Her.

Losing her.

Then suddenly—

Anton moved.

Fast.

A hidden blade snapped loose from beneath the restraints as he lunged directly toward Eliana.

Everything happened at once.

Kael reached for his weapon.

Too far.

Too slow.

For the first time since she met him—

Ghost hesitated.

Because fear hit first.

Fear for her.

Eliana fired instinctively.

One shot.

Then another.

Anton Bale collapsed backward onto concrete dead before the knife hit the floor.

Silence exploded through the warehouse.

Smoke curled slowly from Eliana’s pistol.

Her hands shook violently afterward.

Because she had never killed someone like that before.

Not face-to-face.

Not watching the life leave their eyes.

Kael stared at her.

Not the body.

Her.

“Eliana.”

Her breathing turned uneven immediately.

“I killed him.”

Shock.

God.

The shock in her voice.

Kael crossed the room instantly.

The knife fell unnoticed from his hand.

“Eliana.”

She looked up at him with wide frightened eyes.

Not of Anton.

Of herself.

Kael cupped her face carefully with bloodstained gloves.

Gentle despite everything.

“You saved my life.”

Eliana shook her head once.

Tiny movement.

“I didn’t even think.”

Kael’s forehead lowered against hers immediately afterward.

Breathing rough.

Uneven.

Like he almost lost her.

Again.

“You came after me,” he whispered.

And suddenly Eliana realized something terrifying:

Ghost had gone into the darkness fully expecting to destroy himself there.

But she followed him anyway.
