"BENEATH THE MASK" Chapter 19 — Morphine Truth
Chapter 19 — Morphine Truth
The morphine made honesty dangerous.
Eliana realized this approximately three minutes after Mira injected painkillers into her shoulder and Kael sat beside the medical cot looking like someone barely restraining violence through sheer force of discipline.
Rain battered the cabin windows.
Blood stained the floorboards.
BLACK VEIL operatives moved quietly through emergency cleanup around them.
And Kael—
Kael watched her like she might disappear if he blinked.
“You’re staring again,” Eliana murmured weakly.
Kael didn’t look away.
“You lost too much blood.”
“Very flattering. Keep going.”
Something almost broken flickered behind his eyes.
Mira noticed immediately.
Interesting.
Terrifying.
The medic finished wrapping Eliana’s shoulder before standing.
“She sleeps now.”
Kael’s voice lowered.
“I’ll stay.”
Mira paused.
Then slowly nodded.
No one argued anymore.
Not after the forest.
Not after everyone watched Ghost carry Eliana through gunfire like losing her would kill him too.
The cabin eventually quieted into exhausted midnight stillness.
Kael sat beside her cot in darkness while painkillers blurred Eliana’s thoughts into dangerous softness.
“You almost died,” he said quietly.
The fear beneath the sentence destroyed her.
Eliana looked at him through morphine haze.
At the exhaustion.
The blood still drying beneath his collar.
The terrible lonely man trying so hard not to care too much.
Then softly:
“You would’ve come after me anyway.”
Kael froze.
Because they both knew she was right.
His eyes lowered briefly toward the bandages wrapped around her shoulder.
Then to the bruises spreading along her ribs.
Then finally back to her face.
Like confirming she remained alive required visual repetition.
Eliana’s chest tightened painfully.
God.
He looked terrified.
Not visibly to anyone else.
But she saw it now.
The exhaustion.
The tension.
The way his gloved hands flexed unconsciously every few seconds like adrenaline still poisoned his bloodstream.
“You got shot too,” she murmured.
Kael shrugged once.
Dismissive.
Lie.
The movement visibly hurt.
Eliana narrowed her eyes.
“That is an objectively terrible performance.”
No response.
Which meant she was correct.
Mira reappeared carrying fresh gauze and stopped immediately after seeing Kael still sitting there.
“You’re bleeding through the bandages again.”
Kael didn’t move.
“She needs monitoring.”
Mira stared at him.
Then slowly at Eliana.
Then back at Kael.
Realization spread visibly across the medic’s face.
“Oh,” she said quietly.
Kael’s eyes sharpened instantly.
Mira smirked faintly.
“How psychologically catastrophic.”
Eliana laughed weakly despite herself.
Kael looked personally betrayed by both women simultaneously.
“Leave,” he muttered.
Mira grinned openly now.
“Ghost developed feelings. I need documentation.”
Kael stared at her in silence.
The terrifying kind.
Mira finally left before murder became likely.
The cabin quieted again.
Rain.
Generators.
Their breathing.
Eliana studied Kael through morphine-soft focus.
Without the immediate violence of combat surrounding him, exhaustion dragged visibly at the edges of his posture.
Dark circles beneath steel-grey eyes.
Blood staining tactical fabric.
A man held together entirely through discipline.

“Come here,” she murmured suddenly.
Kael blinked.
Interesting.
That surprised him.
“Eliana.”
“Relax. I’m injured, not delusional.”
Barely.
Kael hesitated.
Then slowly stood.
He crossed the room carefully.
Like approaching something dangerous.
Or fragile.
Probably both.
The cot barely had room for one person.
Yet Kael still sat beside her carefully enough not to jostle the injuries.
Eliana reached toward his side.
Kael immediately caught her wrist.
Fast.
Reflex.
“Don’t.”
Ah.
There it was.
The panic beneath control.
“You’re hurt,” she said softly.
“I’m fine.”
“We both know that’s medically fictional.”
Kael’s jaw shifted faintly beneath the lowered mask.
Eliana studied him quietly now.
Then gently squeezed his hand instead.
The reaction was immediate.
Kael went perfectly still.
Always this.
Always the unbearable stillness when tenderness touched him unexpectedly.
His grip loosened slowly around her wrist.
Eliana turned her hand carefully within his.
Interlocked their fingers.
Simple.
Human.
Kael stared at their joined hands like he didn’t fully understand what he was looking at.
Which nearly broke her heart.
“You don’t have to keep pretending nothing hurts,” she whispered.
Silence.
Rain hammered harder against the cabin roof.
Kael swallowed once.
Then quietly:
“I don’t know how to stop.”
The honesty hit her harder than morphine.
Because suddenly Ghost no longer sounded frightening.
Just tired.
Profoundly tired.
Eliana tightened her fingers around his gently.
“You’re allowed to be human sometimes.”
Kael laughed softly under his breath.
Not amused.
Something sadder.
“That’s never gone well for me.”
God.
The loneliness in that sentence.
Eliana stared at him.
At the scars.
The exhaustion.
The terrible quiet fear buried beneath all his restraint.
Then softly:
“You carried me three kilometers through gunfire.”
Kael looked away immediately.
Retreat.
Interesting.
He could survive torture.
But emotional vulnerability still terrified him.
“You would’ve done the same,” he said quietly.
Eliana opened her mouth automatically.
Stopped.
Because horrifyingly—
He was right.
Silence stretched between them afterward.
Not awkward.
Heavy.
Truthful.
Eventually the morphine dragged harder at Eliana’s body.
Her thoughts blurred.
Eyes growing heavier.
Kael noticed immediately.
“Sleep.”
There it was again.
His favorite command.
Eliana smiled faintly.
“You sound softer when you’re worried.”
Kael froze.
Interesting.
That landed directly somewhere dangerous.
Eliana drifted closer toward unconsciousness slowly.
Still holding his hand.
And just before sleep finally claimed her fully—
She heard Kael whisper something so quietly she almost thought she imagined it.
“I thought I lost you.”
Then darkness swallowed her gently.
When Eliana woke hours later, Kael remained exactly where she left him.
Still awake.
Still holding her hand.
