Chapter 17 — Scar Tissue
Morning arrived grey and cold.
Kael was already awake.
Obviously.
Eliana found him standing outside the motel balcony overlooking the rain-soaked parking lot below while cigarette smoke drifted faintly through the early dawn air.
Not his cigarette.
Kane’s.
Kael simply held it without smoking.
Like he wasn’t entirely sure what normal people did with quiet moments.
Interesting.
Eliana wrapped the motel blanket tighter around her shoulders and stepped onto the balcony beside him.
“You know those cause cancer,” she murmured.
Kael glanced sideways.
“I’m aware.”
“And yet you still associate with Kane.”
Something almost warm touched his eyes briefly.
Gone immediately.
The rain had softened into mist now.
Below them, trucks rolled slowly along the highway while distant headlights blurred silver against wet pavement.
Kael remained silent beside her.
But not distant.
Different.
Closer somehow.
Like last night changed something subtle between them.
Eliana became painfully aware of the scar near his throat.
Visible now above the lowered mask edge.
Pale.
Sharp.
Old.
It disappeared beneath his collarbone.
Knife wound maybe.
Or worse.
Her eyes lingered too long.
Kael noticed.
Of course.
“What.”
Eliana tilted her head slightly.
“The scar.”
Instant tension.
Tiny.
But there.
Kael looked away toward the parking lot.
“Old mission.”
Lie.
Immediate lie.
Too automatic.
Eliana recognized it instantly.
Interesting.
She studied him quietly now.
At the rigid shoulders.
The way his jaw tightened beneath the mask.
The almost defensive stillness.
Whatever happened—
It mattered.
A lot.
And horrifyingly—
Part of her wanted to protect that secret instead of exposing it.
Dangerous instincts continued multiplying.
“You’re terrible at lying,” she said softly.
Kael’s eyes flicked sharply toward her.
That caught him off guard.
Good.
“Eliana.”
“It’s okay.”
The answer escaped before she thought it through.
Kael stared at her.
Rain drifted softly between them.
“You don’t have to tell me.”
A long silence followed.
And somehow—
That silence felt more intimate than confession would have.
Because Kael looked genuinely unprepared for someone allowing him privacy.
Not demanding answers.
Not interrogating.
Just...
waiting.
The realization moved visibly through him.
Tiny shifts beneath years of discipline.
Eliana’s chest tightened painfully.
God.
What had people done to him?
Kael lowered his gaze briefly.
Then quietly:
“It happened during training.”
Not full truth.
Enough.
Eliana nodded once.
No pressure.
No questions.
And unexpectedly—
Kael relaxed.
Microscopically.
But real.
The balcony fell silent again afterward.
Mist drifted across the highway.
Distant traffic hummed softly.
Eliana’s attention returned unwillingly toward the scar.
Then before she could stop herself—
Her fingers lifted.
Touched lightly just beneath it.
Kael froze instantly.
Always this.
Always the unbearable stillness when she touched him.
His breath caught sharply.
Eliana realized too late what she’d done.
Her fingertips rested against warm skin just above the collar of his black shirt.
Too intimate.
Much too intimate.
But Kael didn’t move away.
Didn’t speak.
Didn’t breathe normally either.
The world narrowed painfully around the contact.
Rain.
Mist.
Her fingers against his throat.
Kael stared at her with something raw buried beneath all that restraint.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Want.
God.
Eliana’s pulse turned catastrophic.
She should pull away.
Immediately.
Instead her thumb brushed lightly against the scar.
And Kael closed his eyes.
Tiny movement.
Devastating reaction.
Like tenderness hurt him worse than violence ever had.
Eliana stopped breathing.
Because suddenly kissing him felt dangerously possible.
Then footsteps sounded inside the motel room.
Both pulled apart instantly.
Armor rebuilding.
Distance restored.
Kane stepped onto the balcony carrying coffee and immediately stopped.
His eyes moved between them once.
Then slowly:
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t just interrupt something psychologically life-altering.”
Eliana grabbed the coffee from his hand immediately.
“Excellent survival instinct.”
Kane smirked faintly.
Kael looked away toward the highway again.
But Eliana noticed something anyway.
His hand lifted unconsciously toward the scar she touched.
And stayed there long after she walked back inside.
