"BENEATH THE MASK" Chapter 16 — One Bed
Chapter 16 — One Bed
The motel room smelled like rain-soaked carpet, cheap detergent, and exhausted people pretending not to notice each other.
Which, unfortunately, described most of BLACK VEIL lately.
Eliana stood near the doorway staring at the single remaining bed while Kane tried very hard not to laugh.
“No,” she said flatly.
Kane lifted both hands innocently.
“Last room available.”
“Find another motel.”
“We crossed the border illegally six hours ago.”
“Creative problem-solving builds character.”
Mira brushed past them carrying medical supplies.
“You’re both adults. Survive.”
Then she left immediately.
Coward.
Eliana slowly turned toward Kael.
He stood beside the motel window already scanning exits instead of participating in the conversation.
Of course.
“Say something helpful,” Eliana demanded.
Kael didn’t look away from the window.
“The floor is clean.”
Kane burst out laughing.
Eliana stared at Ghost in genuine disbelief.
“You’d voluntarily sleep on the floor?”
“Yes.”
That answer arrived too fast.
Interesting.
No.
Suspicious.
Because Kael looked almost alarmed by the idea of sharing a bed with her.
Which naturally made her immediately curious.
Dangerous instinct.
Kane finally backed toward the hallway door.
“I’m leaving before this becomes emotionally significant.”
The door shut behind him.
Silence settled instantly.
Kael remained near the window.
Eliana remained near the bed.
The room suddenly felt microscopic.
Rain tapped steadily against the glass.
A neon motel sign flickered weakly outside.
And somewhere in the distance, highway traffic hummed softly through midnight darkness.
Eliana crossed her arms.
“You know,” she said lightly, “normal people would simply share the bed.”
Kael finally looked at her.
“You move in your sleep.”
Eliana blinked.
“What?”
“I noticed during extraction transport.”
Oh.
That.
The realization sent dangerous warmth through her chest.
He noticed how she slept.
Wonderful.
Absolutely catastrophic.
Kael removed his tactical jacket slowly and draped it over the chair beside the window.
No mask tonight.
Not fully.
The lower edge rested loose around his throat instead.
Enough.
Enough to make her pulse betray her immediately.
Kael noticed.
Of course.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“You should sleep.”
“There it is,” Eliana muttered. “Your favorite sentence.”
Kael said nothing.
Which somehow felt more intimate now than conversation.
Eventually Eliana gave up arguing and slid beneath the motel blankets fully dressed except for boots.
Kael remained by the window.
Still watching outside.
Still awake.
Always awake.
Eliana watched him through half-lowered lashes while exhaustion pulled slowly at her body.
The low motel lamp softened the sharp lines of his face slightly.
Without the mask fully covering him, Kael looked younger somehow.
Not safer.
Just more human.
Dangerous distinction.
“You ever sleep normally?” she asked quietly.
A long pause.
Then:
“No.”
Honest.
Again.
Eliana rolled onto her side toward him.
“That sounds terrible.”
“It’s useful.”
“Those are still not the same thing.”
Kael looked toward her then.
The motel light caught faintly in his steel-grey eyes.
Tired eyes tonight.

More than usual.
Eliana’s chest tightened unexpectedly.
Because suddenly she could picture him exactly like this every night for years:
awake.
alone.
watching windows while the rest of the world slept.
Something about that thought hurt.
The silence stretched softly between them.
Then slowly—
Sleep dragged her under.
The nightmare arrived fast.
Her father’s office.
Broken glass.
Gunshots downstairs.
A man screaming.
Then darkness swallowing everything whole.
Eliana jerked awake sharply with a fractured breath.
The motel room remained dark except for neon light bleeding faintly through rain-covered windows.
Her pulse hammered violently.
Disoriented.
Cold.
For one terrible second she forgot where she was.
Then—
Movement.
Kael.
Still awake.
Still beside the window.
Exactly where she left him.
His attention snapped toward her instantly.
“You’re here,” Eliana whispered before thinking.
Kael’s expression shifted slightly.
Tiny.
Soft.
“I’m here,” he said quietly.
The answer settled something jagged inside her chest immediately.
Dangerous.
Very dangerous.
Eliana pushed damp hair back from her forehead.
“You haven’t slept at all.”
“No.”
“Kael.”
His name sounded different this late at night.
Warmer.
More intimate.
Kael looked away briefly toward the storm outside.
“I sleep badly around people.”
Eliana stared at him.
Then softly:
“I don’t think you sleep well around yourself either.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Honest.
Kael’s jaw shifted faintly.
Not anger.
Recognition.
The rain intensified outside.
Eliana slowly lifted the edge of the blanket beside her.
Not invitation exactly.
More dangerous than that.
Choice.
Kael froze.
Completely.
Interesting.
Eliana’s pulse stumbled hard.
“Relax,” she murmured lightly. “I’m offering sleep. Not emotional vulnerability.”
A beat passed.
Then another.
Finally—
Kael crossed the room.
Slowly.
Like approaching something capable of destroying him.
He sat carefully on the very edge of the mattress over the blankets.
Not touching her.
Not even close.
Yet somehow the room instantly felt warmer.
Safer.
Eliana hated how much she liked that.
Minutes passed quietly.
Neither spoke.
Eventually exhaustion dragged her downward again.
And just before sleep finally claimed her fully—
She felt fingers tighten briefly around her wrist.
Kael.
Still awake.
Still grounding himself against her pulse.
Like letting go might send him somewhere dark again.
