"BENEATH THE MASK" Chapter 8 — Possession
Chapter 8 — Possession
The nightclub was designed for rich men with dangerous hobbies.
Gold lighting.
Black marble floors.
Expensive liquor.
Private security armed beneath tailored jackets.
And enough hidden weapons inside the building to start a small regional conflict.
Eliana stepped through the entrance like she belonged there.
Because people rarely questioned confidence wrapped in silk and expensive heels.
Especially men.
Especially predators.
Her dress was dark emerald tonight.
Elegant.
Backless.
The kind of dress designed to distract people from noticing hidden knives.
Kael hated it immediately.
Not the dress itself.
The effect.
Every man inside the club looked at her.
Too long.
Too openly.
Too greedily.
Ghost stood in the shadows of the second-floor surveillance balcony wearing black tactical civilian cover and an expressionless mask while silently contemplating homicide.
Kane noticed.
Unfortunately.
“You’re glaring at civilians again,” Kane muttered into comms beside him.
Kael ignored him.
Below them, Eliana crossed the crowded dance floor toward Dimitri Vassov with smooth effortless confidence.
Dimitri looked exactly like the kind of man who sold missiles recreationally.
Beautiful in a polished, poisonous way.
Late thirties.
Perfect suit.
Predatory smile.
The sort of man who mistook charm for morality.
Kael disliked him instantly.
Not unusual.
Kael disliked most people.
But this felt different.
Sharper.
Personal.
Interesting.
Deeply inconvenient.
“Eliana approaching target,” Mira’s voice crackled softly through comms. “Intel package likely on Dimitri directly.”
Kael watched Dimitri lean down toward Eliana with visible interest.
Too close already.
His jaw tightened beneath the mask.
“She’s got him,” Kane said quietly.
Of course she did.
That was the problem.
Eliana smiled at Dimitri like she’d invented temptation personally.
Warm eyes.
Soft laugh.
Gentle hand against his wrist.
Every movement calculated perfectly.
Kael knew it was manipulation.
That somehow made it worse.
Because Dimitri didn’t know.
And Eliana—
Eliana was terrifyingly good at pretending intimacy.
The realization sat badly in Kael’s chest.
Below them, Dimitri offered her champagne.
Eliana accepted gracefully.
Then leaned close enough to whisper something against his ear.
Dimitri laughed.
Touched the small of her back possessively.
Kael’s hand tightened around the balcony railing hard enough to creak metal.
Kane slowly glanced sideways.
“Ghost.”
No response.
“Eliana knows what she’s doing.”
Still nothing.
Kael’s eyes never left Dimitri’s hand on her waist.
Wrong.
The contact looked wrong.
Too familiar.
Too comfortable.
Something cold moved quietly beneath Kael’s ribs.
Not anger.
Worse.
Jealousy arrived inside him like a structural failure.
Silent.
Violent.
Completely unwelcome.
He hated it instantly.
Downstairs, Eliana slipped effortlessly into Dimitri’s private booth while hidden surveillance cameras streamed directly into Kael’s earpiece.
Her voice remained smooth.
Relaxed.
Playful.
“You know,” she purred softly, “I expected an arms dealer to be uglier.”
Dimitri laughed.
“And I expected intelligence assets to be less charming.”
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
Interesting.
Dimitri already suspected.
Eliana didn’t react outwardly.
Beautiful liar.
“What makes you think I’m intelligence?”
“The way you entered the room.”

“The heels?”
“The exits.”
A dangerous pause followed.
Then Eliana laughed softly.
“You’re observant.”
“I survive professionally.”
Dimitri poured more champagne.
“You’re searching for something tonight.”
“So are you.”
“Difference is,” Dimitri murmured, “I already found it.”
His hand slid higher along her waist.
Kael moved before thinking.
Kane caught his arm immediately.
“Ghost.”
“Move.”
“That’s not mission-critical.”
Kael’s voice dropped lower.
Dangerously calm.
“He touched her twice.”
Kane stared at him.
Then blinked slowly.
“Jesus Christ.”
Below them, Dimitri leaned closer toward Eliana.
“Eliana,” Mira warned quietly through comms, “intel first.”
“I know,” Eliana replied lightly.
But Kael could hear the subtle tension beneath her voice now.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
Except not to him.
Dimitri’s fingers tightened against her waist possessively.
And suddenly—
Kael was done pretending patience existed.
He descended the staircase silently.
Fast.
The crowded nightclub swallowed movement and sound beneath music and flashing gold lights.
No one noticed Ghost approaching until it was already too late.
Eliana saw him first.
Her amber-hazel eyes widened slightly.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Oh no.
Dimitri turned too slowly.
Kael stopped beside the booth.
Towering.
Still masked.
Still terrifying.
The music pounded around them.
No one nearby understood why the atmosphere suddenly felt lethal.
Dimitri smiled lazily.
“And who exactly are you?”
Kael looked at the hand still resting against Eliana’s waist.
Then back at Dimitri.
“Move.”
One word.
Flat.
Emotionless.
That somehow made it infinitely more threatening.
Dimitri laughed softly.
“I’m afraid the lady seems comfortable.”
Eliana opened her mouth.
Probably to prevent murder.
Unfortunately too late.
Kael leaned down slightly.
Close enough now that Dimitri finally understood something deeply important:
Ghost was not bluffing.
“You touched something that belongs to me.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Even Eliana froze.
Because Kael sounded calm.
That was the terrifying part.
Dimitri slowly removed his hand from her waist.
Smart man.
For approximately three seconds.
Then he smirked again.
“She doesn’t look owned.”
Kael’s head tilted slightly.
Predatory.
Cold.
Then everything happened fast.
Too fast for civilians.
One second Dimitri sat smiling.
Next second Kael slammed his wrist against the table hard enough to crack bone.
Dimitri hissed in pain.
Champagne shattered across black marble.
The nightclub music stopped abruptly.
Security reached for weapons.
Kael already had a knife against Dimitri’s throat.
Silent.
Precise.
Controlled.
The entire room froze.
Eliana stared at him.
Not because of the violence.
Because Kael looked utterly emotionless while doing it.
No rage.
No adrenaline.
Just terrifying stillness.
“You’re bleeding on my suit,” Dimitri choked out.
Kael pressed the blade slightly deeper.
“You’re alive. Be grateful.”
Security surrounded the booth cautiously now.
Weapons half-drawn.
Kane’s voice exploded through comms.
“Ghost, stand down!”
Kael ignored him.
Of course he did.
Eliana recovered first.
Naturally.
She placed one hand gently against Kael’s wrist.
The reaction was immediate.
Not visible to others.
But she felt it.
The microscopic hesitation.
The tension shifting beneath controlled violence.

“Kael,” she said softly.
Not Ghost.
Kael.
Wrong move.
Because his eyes changed instantly at hearing his real name from her mouth.
Dimitri noticed too.
Interesting.
Dangerous.
Eliana lowered her voice further.
“We already got the intel.”
A beat passed.
Then another.
Kael stared at her.
At her hand on his wrist.
At the concern hidden beneath her calm expression.
Slowly—
Very slowly—
He lowered the knife.
The room exhaled collectively.
Dimitri stumbled backward holding his injured wrist.
Eyes sharp now.
Calculating.
“Oh,” he murmured quietly. “That’s fascinating.”
Kael’s attention snapped toward him instantly.
Predatory.
Dimitri smiled through pain.
“You’re emotionally compromised.”
Kane appeared beside the booth at exactly the right moment.
“Everyone leaves now,” he announced flatly.
Nobody argued.
Not with Ghost standing there looking one bad sentence away from homicide.
The extraction out of the nightclub happened fast after that.
Rain poured heavily outside.
Black SUVs waiting at the curb.
Mira furious.
Kane exhausted.
Eliana silent beside Kael in the backseat while city lights blurred through rain-covered windows.
No one spoke for several minutes.
Then finally—
Kael said quietly:
“He touched you.”
Eliana turned toward him slowly.
“You stabbed a millionaire in public.”
“He touched you.”
There it was again.
That strange possessive certainty beneath his calm tone.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
Absolute.
Eliana stared at him for a long second.
At the mask.
The gloves.
The impossible restraint stretched too tightly over something dangerous and emotional beneath.
Then softly:
“You scared me tonight.”
Silence filled the vehicle immediately.
Kael’s posture shifted almost imperceptibly.
Not guilt.
Worse.
Concern.
Real concern.
Eliana looked away toward the rain-streaked windows before he could fully see what that reaction did to her.
Because the terrifying truth was—
She wasn’t sure whether she’d been frightened by the violence.
Or by how safe she felt once he arrived.
