"Ghost Doesn’t Fall in Love" Chapter 29
Chapter 29 — Brother's Audio Message
The safe room went silent after Kane's words.
Nyra's hand slipped slowly away from Ghost's mask.
Whatever had existed between them seconds ago—heat, tension, the terrifying softness threatening to surface beneath all his violence—fractured instantly beneath the weight of reality crashing back in.
Ghost stepped away first.
Not far. Never far anymore. But enough to let the mercenary commander settle back over the man she had almost kissed through a skull-painted mask.
"What audio file?" Nyra asked quietly.
Her voice sounded wrong to her own ears. Too thin. Too careful.
Ghost's eyes flicked toward the comm unit immediately. Tactical focus returning piece by piece. "Kane."
"We decrypted part of the contractor archive," Kane explained through static. "There was a hidden drive embedded in one of the convoy files. Audio timestamp predates the ambush."
Nyra's stomach tightened instantly.
"Milo?"
"Yeah." A pause. "You should hear this yourself."
Ghost's posture shifted immediately toward the door. "I'm coming with—"
"No." Kane interrupted carefully.
That made the room colder somehow.
Ghost went still.
"Kane," he said slowly.
Another pause crackled through the comm line. Then:
"I think she needs to hear it alone."
Nyra felt Ghost's attention snap back toward her instantly. Sharp. Assessing. Watching for fractures before they formed.
Too late.
She was already breaking open again.
Nyra swallowed hard and slid off the metal table carefully, ribs aching sharply at the movement. Ghost's hand half-reached toward her automatically before stopping midair.
The gesture hurt more than if he'd actually touched her.
"I'm fine," she whispered.
Ghost looked unconvinced.
Nyra couldn't blame him. She wasn't convinced either.
The silence stretched painfully between them for one more second before Ghost finally stepped aside toward the door. Controlled. Precise. Like he physically had to force himself to create distance from her now.
But his eyes never left her.
Not once.
Nyra followed him through the dim underground corridors toward BLACK VEIL's operations room. The walk felt too quiet after everything that had happened.
No teasing.
No flirting.
Just tension dragging behind them like smoke.
Ghost walked half a step ahead, broad shoulders still streaked with soot and blood from the compound assault. Every few seconds, his attention shifted subtly back toward her. Checking. Measuring. Making sure she hadn't disappeared again.
Nyra noticed every single time.
Which made this infinitely worse.
Because she wanted to trust him.
God, she wanted to trust him.
But Milo's warning already echoed in her skull before she'd even heard it.
He knows more than he says.
By the time they reached the operations room, Kane was waiting beside the main console, expression grim beneath fluorescent lights. Lucas and Reed lingered near the far wall unusually silent. Even Nik looked tense.
Nobody looked directly at Ghost.
Nyra was beginning to understand what that meant.
Ghost unsettled professionals.
Not because he was loud.
Because he wasn't.

Kane slid a small encrypted drive across the table carefully. "Recovered from a dead-drop server connected to the convoy."
Nyra picked it up slowly. Tiny. Black. Harmless-looking.
Her fingers trembled anyway.
Ghost noticed immediately. Of course he did.
"I'll stay," he said quietly beside her.
Nyra looked up at him.
The mask hid most of his expression, but his eyes gave him away now more than he realized. Concern sat there openly. Tension. Something dangerously close to fear whenever she looked emotionally overwhelmed.
And somehow that made this harder.
Because if Milo was right—
Then Ghost was either lying to her…
Or protecting her from something worse.
Nyra hated both possibilities equally.
"Kane," Ghost said evenly, "play it."
The room darkened slightly as the audio file loaded through the speakers. Static crackled first. Corrupted signal. Background noise. Distant shouting somewhere far away.
Then—
Nyra stopped breathing.
"Milo?"
Her brother's voice came through distorted and exhausted.
"Nyra… if this reaches you, then something went wrong."
Nyra's knees nearly gave out instantly. She grabbed the edge of the console hard enough her bruised knuckles turned white.
Ghost moved half a step closer automatically.
Not touching.
Ready to catch her anyway.
Static crackled again. Milo sounded injured. Breathing uneven.
"I don't have much time."
A sharp metallic noise echoed in the background like doors slamming somewhere distant. Voices shouting. Gunfire faintly audible.
Then Milo spoke again. Lower this time. Urgent.
"You can't fully trust Ghost."
The room froze solid.
Nyra felt her entire body go cold.
Beside her, Ghost went completely motionless.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Still.
Too still.
Milo continued through static distortion.
"He knows more than he says. About the convoy. About Hollow Sun. About what happened after extraction."
Nyra's pulse slammed violently against her ribs.
Ghost didn't move. Didn't interrupt. Didn't even seem to breathe.
"He tried to help me," Milo said quietly. "I know he did. But there are things he's keeping from you. Things he thinks will protect you if you don't know."
Nyra closed her eyes briefly.
God.
That sounded exactly like Ghost.
The recording crackled harder.
"If you're hearing this… then it means he failed again."
That word hit the room like a bullet.
Failed.
Nyra saw it immediately—the microscopic shift in Ghost's posture. Tiny. Almost invisible.
But devastating once you noticed it.
Because Ghost reacted to failure like other people reacted to mortal wounds.
Milo's breathing sounded rough now.
"And if he's still alive after all this…" Static swallowed half the sentence. "…then he'll blame himself for everything."
Nyra looked slowly toward Ghost.
He still hadn't moved.
Mask emotionless.
Grey eyes fixed forward.
But something about him looked hollow suddenly.
Like every word out of Milo's mouth was confirming something Ghost already believed about himself.
The recording glitched violently.
"Nyra… listen carefully."
Her chest tightened painfully.
"If Ghost gets attached to you…" Milo coughed hard somewhere in the recording. "He'll burn the entire world down before he lets you get hurt."
Silence.
Heavy. Suffocating silence.
Then the final line came through softer. Almost lost beneath static.
"And that should scare you."
The recording ended abruptly.
Nobody in the room spoke.
Nyra stared at the dark monitor screen, heart beating too fast now. Her entire world tilted sideways all over again.
Because Milo hadn't sounded afraid of Ghost.
He'd sounded afraid for him.
Beside her, Ghost finally moved. Barely.
One slow exhale beneath the skull mask.
Controlled.
Painfully controlled.
Nyra looked toward him instinctively.
Ghost's eyes met hers for half a second before shifting away again immediately.
And somehow that hurt worse than if he'd defended himself.
Because he didn't deny any of it.
Not one word.
The room suddenly felt too small. Too hot. Too full of things neither of them knew how to say aloud anymore.
Nyra's throat tightened painfully.
"Ghost…"
He stepped backward once before she could finish.
Distance.
Armor.
Retreat.
And for the first time since she'd met him—
Ghost looked guilty in a way that had nothing to do with bloodshed.
