"Ghost Doesn’t Fall in Love" Chapter 25
BLACK VEIL prepared for war in absolute silence.
Not the casual quiet of professionals loading gear before another contract. Not the focused calm of soldiers checking ammunition and routes. This silence was heavier. Sharper. Like the entire safehouse understood something terrible had already happened and they were simply waiting for the aftermath to catch up.
Ghost stood at the center of it all.
And that was the part terrifying everyone.
He wasn't yelling.
Wasn't smashing weapons into tables or barking orders through clenched teeth. Wasn't pacing or threatening or radiating obvious rage.
No.
Ghost was calm.
Deathly calm.
The kind of calm that meant somebody was going to die screaming.
Kane watched from across the operations table, jaw tight as Ghost methodically assembled his rifle piece by piece. Every movement precise. Every breath measured. The skull mask concealed everything except those cold grey eyes, and somehow the lack of visible emotion made him look even worse.
Lucas muttered under his breath while strapping knives to his vest. "I liked it better when he broke furniture."
Nobody laughed.
Reed sat on the edge of a crate reloading magazines with elegant efficiency, though even he kept glancing toward Ghost like he expected the room itself to explode. Nik leaned against the wall in complete silence, sniper rifle across his lap, but his posture had shifted subtly into alert mode.
Everybody felt it.
Ghost wasn't operating like a commander anymore.
He was operating like a man hunting something personal.
The live feed still flickered on the far monitor. Nyra's bruised face frozen mid-frame before the signal cut out entirely. Her curls tangled. Lip split. Eyes furious instead of frightened.
Ghost hadn't looked away from that screen for nearly twenty minutes.
Then he'd gone quiet.
Too quiet.
Kane finally stepped forward carefully, like approaching a landmine. "G."
Ghost slid a magazine into the rifle with a clean metallic click.
"You good?" Kane asked quietly.
The question hung in the room.
Ghost chambered a round. Smooth. Mechanical. Controlled.
"She's mine to bring home."
Lucas visibly stopped breathing for a second. Reed's eyebrows lifted slightly. Kane felt his stomach drop.
Not the mission.
Not the target.
She.
Mine.
There it was.
The thing none of them had wanted confirmed.
Ghost was attached.
Kane stared at him carefully. "This isn't tactical anymore."
Ghost looked up slowly.
Those grey eyes were empty in the most terrifying way possible. No hesitation. No conflict. No restraint left. Just cold intent sharpened into something lethal.
"She was taken because of me," Ghost said. Calm. Flat. "So I'll finish it."
The room chilled several degrees.
Kane had seen Ghost angry before. He'd seen him walk through gunfire like death itself. Seen him survive torture, black sites, betrayals, entire kill squads.
But this?
This version of Ghost looked worse.
Because rage could burn out.
This wouldn't.
Ghost rose from the chair in one smooth movement, towering over the room in black tactical gear and skull mask, the rifle hanging loose in his grip like an extension of his body. Every man instinctively straightened as he moved. Predator recognition. Pure instinct.

The projector shifted to satellite imagery of the compound. Desert outskirts. Concrete walls. Two sniper towers. Armed patrols rotating every four minutes.
Ghost studied it once.
Only once.
Then he started issuing orders.
"Lucas, east perimeter disruption."
Lucas immediately nodded. "Already packed charges."
"Nik, tower clearance."
"Done."
"Reed, vehicle extraction route."
"Mapped."
"Kane with me."
Kane paused slightly. "Front entry?"
Ghost reloaded another sidearm. "No."
A beat of silence.
Then:
"We're going through everyone."
Nobody spoke after that.
The air inside the safehouse became suffocatingly heavy. Even Lucas stopped joking. BLACK VEIL moved faster now, sharper, every instinct recognizing that their commander had crossed into a different headspace entirely.
Ghost walked toward the weapons rack. Calm steps. Controlled breathing. Death wrapped in tactical black.
Kane followed him. "G."
Ghost didn't stop.
"You're scaring your own team."
That finally earned a pause.
Ghost tilted his head slightly, skull mask catching the dim light. "Good."
Kane exhaled slowly. "This is exactly what I warned her about."
For the first time all night, something shifted. Tiny. Nearly invisible.
Ghost's hand tightened around the rifle strap.
Kane saw it anyway.
"She got under your skin," Kane said quietly. "Didn't she?"
Ghost didn't answer immediately.
The silence itself became the answer.
Then Ghost turned slightly toward the monitor again, toward the frozen image of Nyra glaring into the camera with blood on her mouth and defiance in her eyes.
His entire posture changed. Just slightly.
Not softer. Never soft.
Worse.
Possessive.
"She shouldn't have been touched," he said.
Low. Controlled. Lethal.
Kane felt actual chills crawl down his spine.
Because Ghost wasn't talking like a mercenary anymore.
He was talking like a man whose restraint had finally snapped.
The safehouse lights flickered once overhead. Rain hammered against the windows. Weapons clicked into place one after another as BLACK VEIL armed themselves for the extraction.
Ghost grabbed his combat knife from the table. The blade gleamed silver beneath fluorescent light.
He stared at it for a moment too long.
Then holstered it without a word.
Lucas leaned toward Reed carefully. "So… we're all aware this rescue mission is about to become an international incident, right?"
Reed slid another magazine into place. "Oh, significantly worse than that."
Across the room, Ghost loaded the final weapon with terrifying composure. No wasted movement. No visible anger. Just absolute certainty.
Nyra was alive.
And whoever had taken her had made the mistake of letting Ghost see her bruised. Bound. Hurt.
Kane watched the man carefully and came to one unavoidable conclusion:
The contractors thought they had kidnapped a mechanic.
What they had actually done…
Was declare war on the only thing still tethering Ghost to humanity.
Ghost turned toward the exit.
"Move."
BLACK VEIL followed instantly.
No hesitation.
No questions.
Because every single person in that room understood the same thing at once:
Tonight wasn't a rescue mission anymore.
It was a massacre waiting to happen.
