"The Stand-In’s Redemption: Playing the Billionaire for Real" Chapter 10
Chapter 10: Thirty Days of Ice
The halfway point of the mandatory thirty-day divorce cooling-off period arrived with a freezing, unyielding silence. Outside, the summer heat wave was suffocating the city, but inside the master study of the Cross mansion, the atmosphere had plunged into absolute zero.
Adrian Cross sat slumped behind his massive mahogany desk, his hair disheveled, his luxury silk tie loosened and crooked.
The past fifteen days since the gala had been an unmitigated slaughter. The Cross Group’s stock had plunged by forty percent, trading had been halted twice, and the board of directors had already scheduled a emergency vote for his termination as CEO.
"She thinks she can just ruin me and walk away," Adrian muttered to the empty room, his bloodshot eyes staring at a silver-framed photograph of Vivian on the shelf. He looked feral, his breathing shallow and rapid. "She's nothing without my name. Nothing."
He opened his encrypted banking portal, his fingers trembling over the mechanical keyboard. If Vivian wanted to play the tragic, independent victim in the press, he would show her what true vulnerability felt like.
He would freeze every asset attached to her name. He would cut off her credit cards, liquidate her personal checking account, and starve her out until she crawled back to sign a joint PR statement declaring the gala incident a "misunderstood artistic performance."
He typed in his master security clearance code and hit enter.
A bright, crimson error screen flashed across his triple-monitor setup.
[ACCESS DENIED: ASSETS SECURED BY FEDERAL ORDERS]
Adrian blinked, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. He refreshed the page. He tried his secondary, off-shore account in the Cayman Islands. Another crimson block. He furiously dialed his private Swiss wealth manager, the call connecting on the first ring.
"Charles! Why the hell am I locked out of my liquid portfolio?" Adrian screamed into the receiver. "Fix it now! I have a margin call in two hours!"
"Mr. Cross..." The voice on the other end was trembling, completely stripped of its usual Swiss professional composure.
"I cannot help you. Two hours ago, the Federal Financial Regulatory Commission, cooperating with an international task force, executed a global freeze on all entities tied to Cross Group and your personal social security number. It's a comprehensive asset forfeiture order, Adrian. They are investigating cross-border money laundering and systematic intellectual property theft."
The phone slipped from Adrian’s hand, clattering onto the desk.
Before he could process the suffocating weight of the words, the heavy oak doors of his study were pushed open without a knock.
A tall, sharply dressed woman in a charcoal-gray federal tactical suit stepped into the room. She was forty-five, with iron-gray hair pulled into a severe bun, and eyes that held the terrifying neutrality of a meat grinder. Behind her, four armed agents began systematically tagging the electronic devices in the room.

"Adrian Cross?" the woman asked, flashing a gold shield. "I am Agent Vance-Carter, Lead Forensic Investigator for the Federal Financial Regulatory Commission. This property and all liquid networks attached to it are now under federal receivership."
"You can't do this!" Adrian shrieked, standing up so violently his leather chair flipped backward. "This is a private residence! This is my company! On what grounds?"
Agent Vance-Carter offered a cold, microscopic smile that didn't reach her eyes—a look that revealed she was a predator who had already tasted blood.
Secretly, her offshore retirement fund had been heavily padded by Silas Vance forty-eight hours ago, but her professional performance tonight was entirely by the book.
"On the grounds of a four-hundred-page comprehensive insider dossier received by our compliance division," Agent Vance-Carter stated calmly, slapping a thick, bound legal document onto his desk.
"It details twelve years of systematic corporate embezzlement, illegal offshore transfers masquerading as 'marital gifts,' and the unauthorized transfer of proprietary patents belonging to the late Dr. Hale."
Adrian’s breath left him in a sharp, painful wheeze. He staggered backward against the window. "A dossier? Who... who gave you that? It’s a lie! It’s an unverified leak from a competitor!"
"The data is highly verified, Mr. Cross," Agent Vance-Carter replied, her voice echoing with absolute authority in the quiet study.
"The whistle-blower provided an unbroken chain of custody for every encrypted transaction file. In fact, our digital forensics team just finished tracing the origin of the upload."
She leaned across the desk, her eyes locking onto his paranoid, twitching face.
"The entire payload was transmitted through a secure, encrypted virtual private network routed directly from a dedicated IP address inside this house. Specifically, from the terminal located in your master bedroom. The upload was completed at exactly 2:14 AM on the night of White Valentine's Day."
White Valentine's Day.
Adrian’s mind violently reeled backward to that night. He remembered coming home, furious about the midnight-blue roses.
He remembered Vivian lying in their bed, looking fragile and pale, telling him with a quiet, submissive voice that she couldn't touch him because it was her "cycle." He had left her alone in that room for hours while he went downstairs to drink himself into a stupor.
She wasn't sleeping.
The realization hit Adrian like a physical blow to the sternum. The submissive, quiet, fragile woman he had treated like a convenient piece of household furniture for twelve years hadn't been a victim.
She had been an executioner, sitting in his own bed, using his own secure home network to systematically skin him alive while he slept down the hall.
"Vivian..." Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying, hysterical realization.
Without answering Agent Vance-Carter, Adrian lunged past the federal agents, throwing open the connecting door to the adjoining master suite.
The bedroom was brightly lit, smelling faintly of lavender and expensive leather. Vivian stood by the window, entirely detached from the corporate warfare collapsing through the walls.

She wore a simple, elegant cream-colored traveling trench coat. Her expression was one of glacial indifference—the look of a ghost who had already crossed over to the other side.
Beside her, a high-speed laser printer was quietly whirring, spitting out a crisp, heavy piece of paper.
"You!" Adrian roared, his face contorted into a monstrous mask of betrayal. He pointed a shaking, sweating finger at her. "It was you! You ruined me! You gave them the files! I gave you everything! A mansion, a name, a life!"
Vivian didn't flinch. She didn't even turn her head fully to look at him. Her amber-gold eyes remained fixed on the printer as the final sheet slid into the tray.
"You didn't give me a life, Adrian," Vivian said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of emotion. "You gave me a cage. And you used my father’s dying breath to fund your mistress’s jewelry. Did you honestly believe the bill would never arrive?"
"I will destroy you!" Adrian screamed, taking a threatening step into the room, his fists clenched. "I’ll tell the press you're an accomplice! I'll drag you down to prison with me!"
From the doorway behind him, Agent Vance-Carter stepped forward, two armed marshals flanking her. "Mr. Cross, step away from the civilian. Your presence is required in the study for device seizure. Do not make us use physical compliance."
Adrian looked at the guards, then back at Vivian’s untouched, serene face. The absolute asymmetry of their power was suffocating. He had lost his wealth, his company, his reputation, and his freedom—and she hadn't even raised her voice.
With a guttural, animalistic shriek of pure, unadulterated madness, Adrian turned back into his study. He began frantically grabbing objects off his desk—the crystal decanter, the silver-framed photos, the antique globe—hurling them against the mahogany walls, smashing his history into worthless, jagged shards. He grabbed his secondary phone, screaming obscenities into an empty, disconnected line as the federal agents moved in to restrain him.
In the bedroom, the chaotic sounds of Adrian’s total psychological collapse faded into background noise.
Vivian calmly reached down and picked up the paper from the printer tray.
It was a one-way, first-class electronic ticket from Capital City International to London Heathrow, dated for the morning after the divorce decree would become final.
She folded the ticket with precise, delicate movements and slipped it securely into the inner pocket of her trench coat, right next to the heavy, cold black-gold keycard Silas had left against her skin.
Without a single glance backward at the ruin of her marriage, she closed her suitcase and walked toward the private exit.
