Chapter 13: The Tragic Truth and Bitter Regret

The report clearly stated that he suffered from Azoospermia.

Meanwhile, Jane Ginger’s medical records showed she was perfectly healthy.

Jasper’s hands shook violently, his eyes filled with shock and disbelief.

It took a long moment before he could stammer out a sentence. "No... that’s impossible. Jane was the one who picked up the reports back then. She was the one with the problem!"

Jasper glared at Leo with bloodshot eyes. "I’ve already confessed! What more do you want from me? I killed Jane! I failed her!"

Leo stood at the interrogation table, leaning forward with his hands pressing down. His gaze was as sharp and cold as a hawk’s as he stared Jasper down. He could tell that Jasper was truly hearing about his own infertility for the first time.

"Jane loved you deeply. To protect your pride, she altered the reports and took the blame for being infertile herself."

Leo leaned closer to Jasper, his deep, cold voice suddenly rising. "She chose to endure the accusations and insults from your mother and your relatives just to protect you, so no one would laugh at you!"

"For years, she guarded this home with her heart. She knew you were sensitive and proud, so even when she found out you were cheating, she didn't tell you the truth. She thought she could still win you back! But what did you do?"

Jasper’s head buzzed, and his blood felt like it was freezing into ice.

He remembered that night a year ago. She had threatened to expose him at the university’s anniversary gala. She had screamed hysterically, "Jasper Xu, do you think Lynn really loves you? You’re just a fool being played! You betrayed me, and this is your karma—you will regret this for the rest of your life!"

At the time, he thought she meant exposing his affair. Now he realized her words had a much darker layer: he had been cuckolded by Lynn, and he was about to become the "happy" father of another man's child. He wanted a child so badly that he refused to live a childless life, only to be tricked into raising a stranger's seed. That was the karma Jane had spoken of.

But he hadn't given Jane a chance to continue. He was blinded by rage because she had touched a nerve. In a fit of fury, he had wrapped his hands around her throat.

Realizing the horrific and foolish mistake he had made, Jasper let out a gut-wrenching sound, like a wounded beast.

"Why didn't she just tell me sooner..."

Tears of regret and agony fell from his eyes as he neared a total mental breakdown.

"Jasper Xu, if you have even a shred of guilt left for Jane, you will tell us exactly what happened."

Jasper closed his eyes. After a long silence, he spoke in a raspy voice. "Fine. I’ll tell you everything I know."

That day, after the violent struggle, he saw Jane stop moving and thought she was dead. Panicked, he fled and drove aimlessly around the city. Eventually, he decided to return to handle her body.

But when he got home, he found Jane lying on the floor with her head bleeding.

Lynn was also in the house, slumped on the floor not far from Jane’s body, her face ghostly pale. She was holding a crystal ashtray covered in blood.

Seeing him return, she trembled violently. "Jane messaged me and told me to come over. She said she wanted to negotiate... When I arrived, she was sitting on the sofa, weak and breathless. She told me to leave you or she’d expose us. I didn't mean to kill her! I did it for your reputation..."

"She also knew I was pregnant. She was jealous that I could carry your child, jealous that I was younger and prettier, jealous that I had your heart! A woman like her... she would never have let us go if she lived!"

Lynn knelt before him, weeping piteously. "Professor, I did it for you! Without her, no one will ever say you only succeeded because of her influence. You can marry me properly, give our child a name, and start a brand new life!"

She took his hand and placed it on her belly. "Feel it. Our child is in here. Haven't you dreamed of continuing your family line? If Jane’s death is exposed, you’ll lose everything!"

Jasper had closed his eyes then, his voice trembling. "I’ll handle it. Just go abroad and focus on the baby."

Ending his recollection, Jasper’s eyes looked ready to burst. His face contorted, veins popping on his forehead as he let out a savage roar. "That bitch! She dared to lie to me! I killed my wife—the only woman who ever loved me with her whole heart—for a lying snake! Jane... I’m sorry, honey... I was wrong..."

Jasper wept uncontrollably. Leo felt no sympathy for him. He stood up and ordered his team to arrest Lynn Lin.

Yecheng International Airport.

Lynn Lin wore sunglasses and carried a suitcase, glancing around nervously as she went through security. Behind her lenses, her eyes flickered with guilt and panic.

Ever since Jasper was taken by the police, she had been terrified. She knew it was only a matter of time before they looked at her. Her plan was to leave the baby with Jasper’s mother and flee. If Jasper didn't name her, she’d eventually come back.

Only when she sat down in her plane seat did she breathe a sigh of relief. Given how much Jasper valued "his" child, he wouldn't talk. She looked out the window, hoping for a quick takeoff. Once she was out of the country, she would be safe.

Just as the cabin door was about to close, two uniformed officers stepped on board. Their eyes locked onto Lynn with precision.

"Ms. Lin, we are with the Yecheng Criminal Investigation Squad. You are under arrest for suspicion of intentional homicide. Please come with us."

Lynn’s face turned paper-white. Her fingers gripped her seatbelt. "You have the wrong person! I didn't kill anyone..."

The police ignored her protests and snapped the handcuffs onto her wrists.

In the interrogation room, upon learning that Jasper had confessed everything, Lynn’s composure shattered under Leo’s piercing gaze. She confessed through a veil of tears.

"The one who used the ashtray to kill Jane... was me and my boyfriend, Chen Wang."

Lynn and Chen Wang had grown up together and had been in love for a long time. Chen wasn't good at school and had dropped out in high school to work and pay for Lynn’s tuition. They had planned to marry after her graduation.

But when she got into university, Chen was scammed and developed a gambling addiction. He owed a massive debt to loan sharks who threatened to cut off his hands if he didn't pay.

The only rich person they knew was the professor from their village, Jasper Xu. Though Jasper was wealthy, Lynn and Chen secretly looked down on him, believing he only got where he was by riding Jane’s coattails.

To save Chen, Lynn intentionally approached Jasper. She had heard rumors back in the village that Jane couldn't get pregnant and that their marriage was failing. She swooped in and seduced him.

Jasper took the bait. While she claimed she wanted nothing from him, she constantly manipulated him into giving her money. When Chen found out she was "supporting" him by being with Jasper, he told her to keep going and squeeze him for more.

But Lynn never expected Jane to find out. Even worse, Jasper tried to dump her after the discovery. It was then that she discovered she was pregnant—and she wasn't even sure if the father was Jasper or Chen.
