"The Heart He Burned" Chapter 1
The most scandalous gossip in North Bay wasn't about the elite's fortunes, but about Clara Joy—the girl who had fallen in love with her guardian, Julian Pierce.
The rumors were vicious. They said that in a desperate bid to drive away Julian’s "white moonlight," Vivian Lim, Clara had pushed the woman down a flight of stairs, causing a tragic miscarriage. Julian, the man who had once pampered Clara like a princess and protected her with his life, had personally handed her over to the police in a fit of cold fury.
Inside the dimly lit mediation room, Clara’s eyes were bloodshot. She stared at the man across the table, her heart fracturing with every breath.
"Julian... you actually framed me? You staged that fall just to stop me from appealing the case against Vivian?"
A flicker of complexity crossed Julian’s eyes, but it vanished as quickly as a shadow, replaced by a mask of clinical indifference.
"Clara, intentional assault carries a minimum sentence of three years," he said, his voice dropping to a cool, level tone. "You’re still young. You don’t want to watch your entire future go up in flames, do you?"
Clara looked up at the man who had raised her for six years. Each word he spoke felt like a serrated blade twisting in her chest.
"And what about my father!" she choked out.
Six years ago, Clara’s father was killed in a hit-and-run caused by Vivian’s drunk driving. Clara, who had only ever had her father, became an orphan overnight. At seventeen, she was a ghost of a girl, lost in a world that had suddenly turned hostile.
That was when Julian Pierce—her father’s former student—descended into her life like a savior. He handled the funeral with flawless precision and looked her in the eye, promising that the killer had been brought to justice. He told her she was safe now.
Then, Julian did the unthinkable. He fought his own family to adopt her. When the Pierce elders refused, he knelt in the ancestral hall and endured ninety-nine lashes until they finally relented. Clara remembered him stumbling out of that hall, his back a roadmap of torn flesh and blood, yet he had managed a small, pained smile for her.
"Clara," he had whispered. "From now on, I will give you a home."
He kept his word. For years, he spoiled her until she became the "Little Princess" of the North Bay socialite circles. The seeds of a forbidden, innocent longing took root in her heart and bloomed.
Everything changed the night of the gala. Julian had been drugged, and in his haze, he had reached for Clara as his only cure. His kiss had been a contradiction—predatory yet tender.
"Clara... be my woman," he had groaned against her lips.
After that night of passion, Clara gave herself entirely to the man she used to call "Uncle." When she learned Julian suffered from a terminal heart condition, she threw herself into the world of medical research, specializing in artificial hearts. She had one goal: to keep Julian Pierce alive.

But the fairy tale shattered the day she went to surprise him with her latest breakthrough. Through a cracked door, she saw the woman who had killed her father.
"Julian," Vivian said, lounging provocatively in his lap, her eyes filled with feigned grievance. "You only adopted Clara back then to secure a letter of forgiveness from her family so I wouldn't go to prison. It’s been six years. How much longer do I have to live in the shadows as your secret?"
She leaned in closer, her voice dripping with honeyed poison. "You haven’t actually fallen for that little girl, have you?"
Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second, his expression unreadable. "It’s just an act, Vivian. Keeping her close is the best way to keep her under surveillance."
In that moment, Clara felt as if ten thousand arrows had pierced her soul. The "devoted protection" she had cherished was nothing more than a meticulously woven trap.
She filed for a second appeal against Vivian immediately. But the day after the notice was served, Vivian showed up at her door. During their confrontation, Vivian had suddenly let go of the railing and hurled herself down the stairs. Within minutes, Julian arrived with the police.
"Clara, your artificial heart project is so close to completion. You wouldn't want to see years of your life’s work turn to ash, would you?"
Julian’s deep baritone snapped her back to the present. He slid his phone across the table. On the screen, Clara saw her laboratory doused in gasoline. The safe containing the prototype had been smashed open.
"Time is running out, Clara. You can choose to watch your legacy burn and become a prisoner, or you can continue to enjoy the life I’ve provided for you. It’s all in your hands."
Clara clenched her fists so hard her nails drew blood from her palms. "Julian, did you forget why I started that research in the first place? Who was it for?"
Julian’s heart was failing. Doctors said he wouldn't live past thirty without a transplant. But his blood type was so rare that finding a donor was a statistical impossibility. For years, Clara had lived in that lab, sacrificing her sleep and her youth to build a heart that could beat inside him.
Julian’s thirtieth birthday was only one month away.
Julian’s gaze stiffened for a moment, a dark emotion flitting through his eyes before he suppressed it. "Prison, the destruction of your lab, or the appeal. The choice has always been yours, Clara."
The light in Clara’s eyes extinguished, inch by inch, until only a cold, hollow despair remained. She uncurled her fists and spoke the words Julian wanted to hear.
"I’ll drop the appeal."
Julian’s expression softened. He reached out, his fingers grazing her hair in a gesture that used to feel like love. "Good girl."
When Clara walked out of the detention center, the sky was a bruised, heavy grey. She pulled out her phone and dialed a number that had remained silent for six long years.
"I accept your terms," she said, her voice devoid of emotion. "But I have one condition. I want Julian Pierce and Vivian Lim to lose everything. I want them ruined."
There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by a low, resonant chuckle.
"No problem," the voice replied. "In one month, I’ll personally come to North Bay to bring you home."
